How could I possibly start the new year in a better way than doing a test sail and visa run to San Andres. Also getting the chance to test my new anchor at some of the most challenging anchorages in the Caribbean. I met a very sweet Dutch girl in Shelter Bay Marina that wanted to join me for this short trip to San Andres, so again I have a crew onboard. We had a really nice sail and made it safe to San Andres with no major issues. It's always something but nothing that can't be fixed. With wind at 30 knots upwind, it is 40 knots apparent! Unsettled winds and storms means reef in, reef out! We waited over Christmas for a weather window to head to the Marquesas. With a brief switch in the wind to northeast, we sailed to Makemo to wait for another switch to SE. We left Makemo, the wind never switched and we had a rough 3 day sail upwind to Nuku Hiva. Reef in – reef out. We provided some extra footage on reefing at night at the very end of the video. Also, we need to train Tiller not to jump in the water to chase fish. MOD70 Zoulou had Erik Maris at the helm. The French sailor has huge experience racing high performance multihulls inshore, but this was his first transatlantic race. Erik commented after finishing the race: “We have raced the boat a few times already and I know the crew really well. This race was as expected; tough and rough and a bit difficult at times. The crew did fantastic work; they are a great bunch of people. It was fast and wavy, but we lost our way two days ago when we got caught in little wind under some clouds for a number of hours. These boats are so fast that losing the wind costs so many miles and it is very difficult to make that up. “It's great fun, fantastic downwind; you never want to give up the tiller to the next guy. Driving is the most comfortable place on the boat and flying along at 30 knots is an incredible ride. Well done to Maserati and Snowflake; they beat us fair and square. We were hoping to catch them, but they raced extremely well,” concluded Maris.

Lezioni di Vela - Sicurezza - Verifica Attrezzatura - Episodio 06 Controllare il rigging, sartie, arridatoi e coppiglie elementi chiavi delle manovre fisse, su una barca da crociera è una operazione facile che può evitare disastri. Nel sesto video-episodio di Scuola di VELA vediamo come controllare le sartie, gli arridatoi, le coppiglie e le drizze, nei punti di maggior usura. Come controllare il rigging sulla barca da crociera Controllare il rigging, le manovre fisse e correnti, è una buona pratica da svolgere all'inizio di ogni uscita. Per quanto riguarda le manovre fisse la prima cosa da controllare sono gli arridatoi, che sono quei dispositivi a doppia vite che servono a tesare le sartie. Bisogna verificare la presenza di tutte le coppiglie, e degli anellini di sicurezza, che servono a bloccare gli arridatoi dallo svitamento sotto carico. Uno degli incidenti più frequenti infatti, è dovuto alla mancanza di uno di questi piccoli anellini di metallo, quando la sartie è sottovento, e dunque scarica, la coppiglia si può sfilare, e al cambio mura, si rischia il disalberamento se l'arridatoio a fondo corsa si svita. Gli arridatoi, vanno nastrati sia per scongiurare la perdita delle coppiglia, che per non avere punti metallici taglienti in vista. Le sartie vanno controllate nel punto d' innesto nel terminale, la presenza di ruggine o l usura di uno dei trefoli dei cavi, è sinonimo di grave deterioramento del cavo.
