Join us this week as we travel from Lagos to Vilamoura. We run into trouble attempting to negotiate the bureaucracy that is exporting and importing our dog (Walter) out of Portugal and into Morocco. First we tried to get a rabies titer test performed only to find out the Portuguese labratory may take 2 weeks or up to 1 month to get the results back to us. This would mean we massively outstay our Schengen visa, and we won't get to Morocco in time for Christmas, where we have friends meeting us. We need to make sure we have all the paperwork sorted so that we can get him into Morocco without a hitch, but also get him back into the EU after our Morocco visit. Morocco is high-risk for rabies so there are more stringent controls in place. To move a dog from Portugal to Morocco, Morocco requires a health certificate to be issued, but it is only valid for 3 days. All other EU countries the health certificate is valid for 10 days. 3 days is not a long time, and puts us in a tricky position for sailing to Morocco. It means we have to compromise on the weather window! We also explore Vilamoura slightly, and get to meet up with my brother Elliot Hanson, an Olympian, sailing in the Laser dinghy. If the regatta format is more your thing, Italy’s Tre Golfi Sailing week offers a mix of inshore and offshore racing. The event, which is now in its 68th year, begins with an offshore tour of the Bay of Naples.

Looking ahead to 2024 and further north where the summer sun barely sets, the Royal Ocean Racing Club will be running the Roschier Baltic Sea Race for the second time. Last year, the inaugural 635mile race started from Helsinki in Finland and took the fleet around the Swedish island of Gotland and back.

Getting an entry into the Rolex Fastnet Race has become almost as competitive as the race itself. So, if you’re in already well done, if you’re not the clock is counting down and registration for the final classes closes in April. This year will be the 50th race, a milestone for an event that is steeped in history

So far I am pleased with the performance of the Boothby-modified-Hasler self-steering arrangement, but now I would like to get some numbers to back up my opinions. WE ARE IN SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES 🏝️ we are settled in at Union island, we take a little walk from frigate island to Clifton to check in and we do a little hike (on a path that we aren’t even sure is an actual path) up frigate island 🏝️

In this episode we arrive in Antigua from our crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, flying the A5 Spinnaker. Arriving during the World Cup it took a moment to get our spot on the dock identified, but we eventually made it. Also in Antigua: - a hike up Middle Ground trail and the historic military ruins in the area; - a visit to Pigeon Beach and Catherine's Cafe (good but very expensive drinks); - we move the boat to Mamora Bay, the home of the St James Club marina and resort, where we join Steve and family for the holidays; - we have a Hobie Cat race in the bay; - the Takacat dinghy flips over during a 2 AM rain/wind squall, submerging the engine upside down in salt water. It’s Day 12 of Leg 2 of The Ocean Race and the crew on Malizia caught a fishing net on their foil! They had to go on a mission and climb down onto the foil, while travelling at 25 knots, to cut it off. INEOS Britannia, Britain's challenger for the 37th America's Cup, has suffered damage to their T6 Test Boat after a capsize incident during a test day on Palma Bay, Mallorca. INEOS Britannia Skipper and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie said, “It was a tough situation for the team once T6 fully inverted. Everyone came together well to resolve what could have been a much more serious issue in salvaging the yacht. Thankfully everyone is safe, and we can now focus on repairing the damage as part of a pre-scheduled upgrade window at the end of this week.” Popular French Vendee Globe Sailor Clarisse Cremer, has been dropped by her sponsor Banque Populaire just after she had a baby in November 2022. Banque Populaire's dropping of Clarisse Cremer has caused widespread outrage among the offshore sailing community, and has become a huge national story in France. Cremer, who currently holds the record for being the fastest woman to sail solo around the world, raced for Banque Populaire in the last Vendée Globe, and was due to take the helm of the former Apivia for the same backers in the 2024 race. Emirates Team New Zealand has started two boat testing in Auckland. Peter Burling helms one, and Nathan Outteridge, the other. It is interesting as Pete was interviewed after day one, and did he admit to "Sandbagging?". There was a record-breaking start for the Canada Ocean Racing team on their journey to the Vendee Globe in 2028. The Canadian flagged team, Scott Shawyer and Alan Roberts, broke the RORC Transatlantic Course Record in the double-handed class by more than 8 hours. The mentor for the IMOCA team is Alex Thomson, of Hugo Boss fame.

Nous larguons les amarres le jeudi 2 février 2023, pour la République Dominicaine dans la baie de Samana pour aller à la rencontre des baleines à bosse qui migrent de janvier à mars dans cette baie pour se reproduire. Nous avons 375 milles à parcourir, 3 jours de navigation.
