Since this is our home, we wanted an effective means to clean our clothes, so todays feature of the day is about our laundry room, which in the case of Mira is also our master head (bathroom). We opted to use two quality home units instead of the typical washer/dryer that usually serves to clean clothes well and then just make them dizzy after that. The dryer uses a condenser pump (basically an air conditioning type system to extract water from the clothes without needing a lot of heat and a vent). Vents would allow salty sea air in, which would quickly rust out a regular household unit. Time will tell how they hold up, but they both work phenomenally. For those wondering why two different makes, it’s because they LG had the most efficient and least deep washer option, while Siemens had the highest efficiency and offered the condenser drying method. Here are the model numbers. They are South African 230V/50Hz models. Hopefully similar models are offered elsewhere. The new Excess 14 made its U.S. debut at the Miami International Boat Show, and a first walk-through revealed several features geared toward making this a comfortable cruising cat with an emphasis on fun sailing. Excess has collaborated with VPLP Design to create asymmetrical hulls to reduce drag and a higher bridgedeck to reduce slamming. The keels, too, have been redesigned to be thinner, slightly deeper, and with a reduced cord length—all to improve upwind performance. Twin helms are located directly over the rudders, which have also been deepened, and a Dyneema steering system allows for maximum feel at the helm. Bulkheads are infused foam rather than plywood to save weight, and carbon fiber has been added to the main bulkheads as well. The mast is deck-stepped, rather than on the cabintop, which allows for a lighter cabintop structure as well as great accessibility to the mainsail via three steps up to the boom. According to Thibaut de Montvalon, Excess catamarans’ director, 80 percent of Excess customers are monohull sailors who don’t want to sacrifice the fun and feel of sailing for the comforts of a catamaran, and the new Excess 14 aims to bridge this gap.

This week im having a chat with Kristin & Fabio from the YouTube sailing channel Harbors Unknown @HarborsUnknown Kristin and Fabio are cruising around on a new Seawind 1600, an offshore cruising catamaran built in Vietnam by an Australian company Fabio is from Italy and Kristin is from Rhode Island, they previously owned a Dragonfly folding trimaran and also cruised on a Oceanis 473 before going big with an ocean crossing catamaran. Since taking ownership of their boat they have cruised up and down the east coast of the United States and are now sailing down to Panama where they are waiting to cross through the canal and begin their largest passage to date, crossing over to French Polynesia. ** NOW SOLD ** Earendil is a 2005 Bavaria 42. This is a three cabin, two head, twin wheel cruising yacht in excellent condition. Earendil has lived in a marina berth since new with hatches and cockpit covered. She has clearly had experienced and caring owners who have maintained the yacht in top condition. The interior is light and airy and finished in mahogany. The saloon upholstery was replaced in 2015 with a beautiful microfiber. The cabins are spacious, particularly the forward owner’s cabin which is a semi-island berth with impressive floor space and a private ensuite. There is a dedicated nav / desk station and the inline galley features two fridges. Navigation equipment is largely by Raymarine and all displays and the two plotters were installed new in 2014. There is RADAR, AIS, and auto-pilot. Solar panels keep the batteries topped up while there is a shore power system with cabin outlets, Mastervolt inverter / charger plus a secondary battery charger. Standing rigging was replaced in 2014 by Riggtech and sails include a large overlapping headsail (#1), a #3 and the fully battened main (new battens and cars in 2015 for easy raising and dropping). The blue hull and cabin stripes have been painted and look stunning. The twin wheel cockpit is practical, modern, and super impressive with the epoxy polished teak cockpit table. There are custom side cockpit covers. The custom stainless steel davits / targa system lift the dinghy easily and is operated by one person. The dinghy is raised high to allow for easy cockpit access and to allow for clear views while in the cockpit. All lighting including nav lights are LED. The Volvo was upgraded on original order to the larger 55hp (naturally aspirated so no turbo to service) and has been regularly serviced. The keel is the upgraded lead version. Earendil is a ready to sail option in great condition with a solid inventory.

And to add to that my autopilot gave out. I thought it would be good idea to sail leeward instead of windward of Sao Nicolau Island. I didn’t want to spend the night worrying about the screaming rocky shore windward of the island. I decided to change course and go south. Yes if I thought our first BALMAR 48V 5Kw alternator was a game changer for our life onboard Sophisticated Lady, You can only imagine how impressed I think we will be with the addition of our 2nd Balmar alternator, effectively doubling the charging capability from our new BETA Marine 85Hp diesel engine.. this upgrade transitions our engine from not only being a source of propulsion but also a primary backup source of power generation so we can run anything we want onboard, whenever we want.. including AIR CONDITIONING 24/7 while only requiring an average of 1-hour per day of run time on the engine.. that will be a GAME CHANGER in itself because most boats we are near that run air conditioning or a lot of electrical accessories have to run their generators 24/7 also. This will be part of the tests I'll be running on the full system now that is up and running, and report my findings back to you in a future video. In this episode, we were boarded by the customs at anchor. What can you bring and what can you not bring into Panama? When trying to check in we were told to go back to BE FREE and be in quarantine until we were cleared... The Customs was actually quite polite and friendly. However this time I was told by the port captain that I also had to clear out of Bocas with a Zarpe before sailing to the Colon district. We were even told we had to go to the airport for exit stamps on our passports. Luckily the personnel at the airport customs and immigration is a bit more qualified and updated. There we got it confirmed. No need for exit stamps there, and my guess is you really don't need a Zarpe from Bocas either as long as you are sailing inside Panama. I really like Bocas del Toro and wanted to show Gee lots of nice places on our short stopover en route to Shelter Bay Marina. Unfortunately, all this additional buro-crazy stole lots of our time here, and we even chose to go one day earlier as we kind of lost our interest in Bocas this time. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The last year of sailing for us has been an epic one. We did some awesome things, like sail across the BIGGEST OCEAN ON THE PLANET! Baker, Fremantle West Australia in foam and vinylester with kevlar reinforcing in high load/ impact areas for shorthanded bluewater cruising. "Pacific Hawk's" upgrades include a New 1250 amp/hrs bank of Lithium Batteries, New folding Prodder with furling screecher ( 2022)for extra performance and upgrades to a host of it's systems & equipment detailed below, Brand new rigging May 2022 when she was hauled out and antifouled at The Boat Works. Easily handled by two people in any conditions with its electric winches activated from the central elevated God Pod to handle the sails.
