In February 1944 the United States launched Operation Hailstone - often referred to as Japan's Pearl Harbor - a surprise naval air attack that lasted 3 days. It decimated the Japanese fleet. More than 230 aircraft were destroyed and more than 50 ships sunk. It unintentionally created one of the best wreck diving destinations in the world. We dove here on the 74th anniversary of the attack. Many lives were lost a sobering week of scuba diving for sure! Thanks for watching.

** NOW SOLD ** Kemara is a one owner 2011 Hanse. This is a neat, three cabin, mid-sized, easy to sail cruising yacht with a great turn of speed. Hanse is known for their ease of handling with their self-tacking headsails, Kemara also has a Raymarine auto-pilot. The Judel/Vrolijk hull design is slippery and efficient, making for seriously fun sailing. The cockpit is very well protected by the dodger and bimini plus there is an infill sheet. There are also both cockpit shade covers, and separate cockpit side clears for ultimate protection. The helm seat is removeable making for easy walk-through access to the water or onto the dock. Down below, Kemara is light, airy and in great condition. The three-cabin layout allows for ultimate flexibility with accommodation or by simply using one aft cabin for dry and secure storage. The owner’s cabin is forward, the large dining table folds allowing for additional space and there are sensible storage lockers. Kemara is powered by a Volvo 28Hp engine with only around 580 hours. The engine hours and the condition of the sails give some insight into the easy life that the yacht has enjoyed. She’s been used by her one and only owners simply as a local Pittwater escape, mainly for day sailing. Solar panels keep batteries topped up while on a mooring plus there is a shore power system with charger and also an inverter. Kemara covers all bases and is a smart option for weekend escapes, coastal cruising, club racing or simply very easy sailing.

Join us this week on Sailing Nendaz as we sail from Vilamoura, Portugal to Tangier, Morocco. We sail to Africa! Because of some strict red tape around exporting/ importing dogs from Portugal to Morocco our weather window was very compromised. We were also in a bit of a rush to try and get to Morocco for Christmas too where we had friends waiting (Sailing Saffron) in the marina, and other friends flying out from England to join us. We had a health certificate, only valid for 3 days which allowed us to import Walter into Morocco. We had already used one day up in getting the certificate, and the weather was no good. So this meant we had 2 days to get to Morocco, so we decided to sail it in a single 24 hour sail, 145 nautical miles. About 1-2 hours into the passage our autopilot failed, the plastic gears had worn down to nothing. So it meant we either turnaround, and then we would need to arrange a new health certificate for Walter, and miss our Christmas plans in Morocco, and further overstay our Schengen visa. Or we continue on and just hand steer on shift patterns. We opted to continue on with the help of my (Joe's) cousin Sam. We faced a pretty rough sea state, with big waves in the 3-4 metre range. A proper washing machine of waves mixed in from different directions. We nearly experience a full knock down. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. Plenty places to drop anchor or tie up to the public moorings. We highly recommend visiting the Tomaree Mountain and the Homegrown Market. ~BROUGHTON ISLAND~ Pretty bays to explore, with public moorings available and camping grounds on southern side of island. We enjoyed the walking trail,heaps of beautiful native flowers and pretty cool to check out the shacks. ~CROWDY HEAD~ We didn’t have plans to visit here, but due to weather we decided to check out the harbour. We were going to drop anchor outside of the groin, but it was way to rough. Upon our arrival we notice that there was someone waving to us to come to a jetty where he was standing - so we did. That’s when we meet Phil, his a local resident who notice us on the AIS and came down to say hello to us. Phil helped us tie up the lines, advised us it was fine for us to stay at the jetty and shared some local information. He mentioned that Harrington Club, which is about a 12 minute drive to the next town, has a courtesy bus. I rang the club and they sent a bus to pick us up, talk about great service! This place had the most amazing views, over looking the coast. We enjoyed a yummy meal, got a takeaway Chicken Parmy for Josh and we also purchase a carton of beer from over the counter. Then the bus dropped off the locals, including Zahra and I back to Crowdy Head. Highly recommend checking out the lighthouse and the Harrington Club. ~CAMDEN HAVEN & LAURIETON~ Apart from the bar crossing this place is a hidden gem, we stayed here for a week. Upon our arrival heading up the river, a lovely lady shouted out ‘Welcome to Camdem Haven!’ 😂 There is public moorings available in front of the RSL Cub in Laurieton or also a public jetty. Such an epic spot to explore, heaps of paths to go for long walks, awesome coffee shops along the river and we also went to one of the most friendliest laundry mats ever. Great place to chill while washing, friendly staff and the regulars are great to have a chat with. Highly recommend hiring a Boomerang Bike in Camdem Haven, you can pick up helmets from the local fuel servo and riding along the river. Go treat yourself to the fish & chips at Laurieton Seafood, it’s delicious 😋 📺 Episode 3 - we rip our main sail while sailing up to Port Macquarie. We remove the diesel engine and build a custom outboard well locker in the enlarged lazarette to hold an ePropulsion Navy EVO 6.0 electric outboard motor. The electric motor can be swapped out for a Tohatsu 9.8HP gas motor if longer range is needed for extended trips up the east coast ICW or transiting the Panama Canal or as backup in case any of the components of the electric system fail when out cruising away from replacement parts. This system is not a comparable replacement for the ample propulsion of a large diesel engine. It is a low-powered, short-range alternative that requires a higher level of patience and seamanship skills. The 6kw electric outboard is advertised as 10hp gas equivalent but in case it doesn't live up to expectations or proves unreliable we have the gas outboard option. And since the electric motor's large 48 volt battery can directly charge the smaller 12 volt house battery, it provides enlarged battery capacity even when the gas motor is installed. We also converted from wheel steering to a simple tiller. We reversed the slope of the cockpit footwell so that it drains aft above the waterline, which eliminates two more seacocks. And we added 210 lbs of lead ballast to the bilge to compensate for loss of weight from the inboard diesel. People often ask me if a tilting outboard well is suitable for their particular boat. Unfortunately, the geometry of most boats won’t allow it. The boat needs to have a large lazarette locker, an overhanging transom, and certain minimum dimensions between the transom and the tiller head strap on top the rudder shaft. Or if you have wheel steering, suitable clearance between transom and emergency tiller. As we previously reported, 11th Hour Racing found that both their newer foils were damaged on the way to Cape Town, and they applied to the organisers to replace them and they were granted this request. So out came the old foils and, for them, Leg 3 is starting this weekend. We wonder if changing keels or masts and sails is likewise allowable? The Australian Yachting Championships were held in South Australia last week and Harry Fisher of Down Under Sails covered the racing. We will have a further report next week. After sailing for more than 30 hours and reaching speeds of nearly 40 knots, the Mod 70 Zoulou, skippered by Erik Maris from France, secured the Multihull Line Honours victory in the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600 race by a mere 11 seconds. Zoulou finished the 600-mile course in just under 31 hours, while Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi 70 representing Itay came in second place, just like they did the previous year, after yet another photo-finish.
