WOW!😜 How NOT to Impress My German SAILOR GIRL - Sailboat Safety & Off Grid Present⛵ Sailing SV CUBA
For me as a German sailor, safety on a sailboat is a priority. But while we are sailing off grid, things are not always as simple as they seem. In this episode, it seems, everything breaks. We have no working engine, no working dinghy and no working cake for my sailor girl…! 🤦♀️🤦♀️ Follow us on this episode of Sailing SV CUBA how we get our sailboat working again, invent an off grid fix for our dinghy and go WOW over Salsa’s Bírthday present!
We set sail from Padstow and head back towards Cardiff. The skipper is back on board and planning passages, leaving me to enjoy helming and keeping watch. This is my happy place as I do get a bit seasick down below when we are on passage. Seagull is sailing like a dream with her new copper bottom and at one point we manage 8 knots under sail, making us both extremely happy. Our new Rocna anchor is put to the test, and we could not be happier with the result. It sets very easily and held fast in F5 offshore breeze. We both slept well and we will definitely be anchoring out a lot more next season and enjoying life on the hook. Thanks again for watching our videos. This may seem like a trivial thing to have on a boat, but I can tell you it has been invaluable on the crossing! With each of the four of us getting up at different times, being able to quickly and easily make our favorite drink in just about any sea state has made starting our watches so much nicer. It does require frequent emptying of the drip tray and filling of the water vessel, but it does self clean each time it is turned off. We’ve had this since just after moving to South Africa and we really have enjoyed it, and as mentioned in the video, guests have been really impressed with the quality of the coffee and ease in making it. The reason we chose the Philips is because it had one of the highest pressures to extract the coffee and because of how it uses milk. As shown, it uses a straw system, so we can just stick that into a carton of milk instead of filling a special container that comes with other brands of machines. Because our fridge is small, we felt it important to not have another “thing” to put in the fridge. Model Philips EQ.6 plus s 500 Want more? It may seem strange that I have posted a video of a "square rigged tallship" on an essentially multihull related channel, but I am always interested in alternative and traditional boats and how they sail. So in the past I've uploaded a video of sailing on the replica of the Bligh mutiny boat and racing on a Bahamas Class A sloop. The "Tres Hombres" is actually a brigantine (so has square sails only on the foremast). It is used to carry cargo between Europe and the Caribbean in the traditional way. With no engine it has to be towed in and out of port. It's seen here sailing off the west coast of Barbados and was filmed from the 100ft schooner "Ruth". It sails surprisingly well, reaching faster than Ruth (although we did have rigging issues which slowed us) and would certainly be faster downwind in the trades. The tack looks ponderous, but is actually completed in less than a minute. You can see the squaresails are left aback so the boat makes a sternboard which ensures a smooth turn. Clearly with so many sails the crew have to be experienced to sail the boat efficiently - there's a lot to be said for the "Average White Boat". This time, we decided to Take Galactica south to sail the region around Gulfport Marina, Mississippi! I get in trouble....again.... This episode is a little different with a short homage to a sailing mentor who passed and is mostly sailing on the water. We lost and broke so many things on this trip--yet we had a blast! I'll scroll a summary of these on the last episode of the series. This will probably be a series of four short episodes. This a special episode that in 10 minutes summarize our entire 2000 NM Atlantic Islands adventure roundtrip. We originally created it for a speak we gave at our local sailing club in Visby but we felt that we wanted to share it here as well. The Atlantic islands adventure will continue with normal episodes about Santa Maria Island and our trip back to the Mainland so regarding that you can see this as a teaser. Follow us on Noforeignland https://www.noforeignland.com/boat/fridaafwisby?sid=6095395836919808&tc=1674678682264 We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is not to go to a specific place but to reach a state of mind where we can really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again.

I am a heavy user of action cams, although it is possible to get a more 'filmic' (low depth of field) look with mirrorless/DSLR cameras, I prefer the smooth motion you get with modern action cams, so unless we are sitting still (rare for us) it's often our camera of choice. Also living on a boat the level of waterproofing is far superior on these cameras (My main camera, FujiFilm X-T9 is in for water damage repair at the moment:( So my action cams have to do more than just record the action, in fact their number one role is for walking - talking PTC's so good sound is a must too. I also tend to shoot multi camera interviews and often use several GoPros as reverse / wide cameras and I think in the last few of these I've done we haven't managed to get through the interviews without one, two or all of the GoPros flaking out on us for various reasons! So something had to be done. I've been trying out the Insta360 X2 and liked it. So I got an X3 and an Insta360 ONE RS (I know Insta's naming of it's cameras needs some work!) So far I've had 100% reliability with these cameras ( I've had the X2 for a year, the others just for a few months, so early days) I've also been impressed with the quality, adaptability and general design of Insta's gear and accessories so I thought I'd put together a little run through of what they have to offer both in 360 mode and in a standard single lens mode. I'd be interested in your thoughts, personally I think GoPro are killing themselves by putting out glitchy products, just as it seems DJI are doing with their drones at the moment. Is it that a company gets to a certain size and starts cutting corners with quality control? That's how is seems to me. Anyhow I'm very glad we now have Insta360 as a great alternative (perhaps it will make GoPro up their game?) and we also have some excellent drone alternatives (especially for us guys on the water in the form of waterproof drones) I'll be testing another one of them soon and coming up with some interesting ways of using an Insta 360 camera on a drone... watch this space! If you're interested in buying any of this gear the links below should get you a discount and there's some free stuff on this link!... How is it even possible for a boat to sail faster than the wind, let alone 2-3 times faster, like this AC72s of the 34th America’s Cup? That’s exactly what we’re going to find out in this video. Early sailing ships looked like this, and pretty much used their sails as big parachute like drag devices to pull themselves along in the same direction as the wind. This isn’t very efficient and it’s also impossible for any boat like this to sail faster than the wind. This is because as the boat accelerates the wind effectively disappears as boat catches up to it. Instead, modern sailing boats work much more like airplanes which use their wings to generate lift. Except on a boat the wings are oriented vertically instead of horizontally. One wing is the sails in the air, and the other is the daggerboard or keel in the water, also called a foil which is short for hydrofoil. The foil produces just as much lift as the sail even though it’s much smaller, and that’s because water is 800 times denser than air. Modern sails look much more like a streamlined airplane wing than a baggy parachute. They also generates lift in the exact same way. As the wind flows over a modern sail from front to back, the sail generates lift perpendicular to the surface of the sail, just like an airplane wing. Underwater foils like the keel on this monohull come in all shapes and sizes, but like the sails in the air they also generate lift perpendicular to their surface as the water flows over them from front to back. Except unlike an airplane, where the wings both generate lift in the same direction to lift the plane off the ground, the sails and foils on a sailing boat generate lift in opposite directions, and this is what propels the boat forward. The tighter the angle between the lift from the wind and water, the faster the boat will go. And the faster the boat goes, the more apparent wind it generates to flow over its sails, which generates more lift, which makes the boat go even faster. And this cycle will continue until the friction with the water prevents the boat from going any faster. That’s why the fastest boats have underwater foils that provide lift in two directions – a horizontal side force to counteract the forces of the sails and drive the boat forward, and a vertical component to lift the boat out of the water and reduce friction. None of this would be possible without high tech materials like carbon fibre, epoxy, and Dyneema, which can create structures stronger than steel at a fraction of the weight. The square rigged ship in this video is the Batavia, which was built in Amsterdam in 1628, more than 200 years before people really began to understand how wings generate lift: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batavia_(1628_ship) And thanks to Trent Palmer for the flying footage - love his channel! https://www.youtube.com/@TrentonPalmer Disclaimer: - This content is offered solely for your education and entertainment. - There are no warranties, expressed or implicit, about any content or its fitness for a particular purpose. - There are risks of injury, death, drunkenness, and financial hardship involved in sailing. - The skipper is always responsible for the safety of their vessel and crew. - Sailing Tips is not responsible or liable in any way for anything that happens on or anywhere near your boat or any boat that we are not in command of. #howto #sailing #howtosail #learntosail #sailingtips

We completely transform the look of our bridge deck by spraying on a high build primer. We've been working very hard this new year to fair all our surfaces and get them ready for primer. Last week we were *so close* but still needed to touch up a lot of our edges. Now after the last bits of fairing compound have gone on, Matt takes our router to give those sharp points a nice rounded edge of 3/8". And then... we're ready to prime!! We cover the transverse seats and backs of the settee, the bulkheads leading down the steps to the master hull, and the outboard galley section. It started a little rough, but the finished product is beautiful, and has us so excited to get the rest of the areas to this point! We hope you enjoy! San Blas Islands... a beautiful paradise in Panama, but the Guna Yala people are not governed by Panama and have their own laws and traditions that make it a very unique place to visit. The stunning scenery is something you would see on a postcard or travel ad. And the people are very industrious from the way they get around the islands on their dug out sailing canoes to the way they have adapted new business ideas to cater for visiting sailors. This episode gives you a glimpse into 'A day in the Life' of our family while at anchor in San Blas followed by an epic kite surf session using the trade winds that pump through this region. Archie gives you all some clear instructions on how to launch a kite from a boat! However our kiting aspirations are quickly squashed by the local Congresso and we discover there are more rules in San Blas islands than we expected. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". In this episode, we replaced our old Dacron sails with new Hydranet Radial sails from Ullman Sails. Our old sails were worn out, fraying, torn at the luff, faded and overall coming apart. They probably would have lasted another year or two, but we didn't want to set out on a 1500 mile journey to the Caribbean with sails in that condition. We also began provisioning for the passage with a $1000 trip to the grocery store and a major Home Depot run. Thanks for watching.
This weeks video is all about our thoughts on buying an old second hand catamaran. What on earth would posess us to sell the house and buy the most run down catamaran in the boat yard? Well sit back and let us walk you through our thought process behind choosing a 30 year old Catana42s and why we think it was a better option in this current market than buying brand new. I made a costly blunder and it will cost us thousands of dollars! We go over all the sordid details in this video. On better news, we go over our new options for our tender outboard and how we built our positive pressure respirators. We also update where our kit is now, when it is arriving, and what has to get done at the build site to to get ready to start the construction of our 50' Performance Cruising Catamaran from Schionning Design. Once we build S/V Lynx, we plan to sail our boat on a double circumnavigation of planet Earth. We want to see the world by sailboat, but we have to build our dream boat first and that starts very soon! We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. We take a break and embrace the Canadian winter by going on a ski trip to the western Rockies in British Columbia. Big White Resort is our destination so come along and see what big mountain skiing is all about... #skiing #bigwhite #retirementtravel #travel #skivacation
In this episode we continue our exploration of Antigua, with a snorkel of the wreck of the Andes in Deep Bay, and a short hike to an adjacent fort. We then proceed around to Maiden Island on the northeast side of the island where we take some kiteboarding lessons. Also, some of our electronics are acting up....the autopilot and wind gauge. So it's boat work time again! Watch to the end for some bloopers! Thanks for following! The Royal Ocean Racing Club announce that the overall winner of the 14th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 is Roy P. Disney’s Pyewacket 70 (USA). None of the teams still racing under IRC has any realistic chance of beating Pyewacket 70 after time correction. The Pyewacket 70 team will be presented with the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy at the Prize Giving on Friday 24th February. Pyewacket 70 Crew: Ben Mitchell, Peter Isler, Tony Mutter, Brad Jackson, Brian Janney, Daryl Wislang, David Tank, Jan Majer, Mark Callahan, Matt Mialik, Robbie Kane, Rodney Daniel, Tristan Louwrens. “We are super-excited about winning overall,” commented skipper Ben Mitchell. “With Pyewacket 70 we don’t go into these races necessarily thinking that a corrected time win is our goal, we go for Line Honours and potentially to set a new record. So, when a handicap win comes that is fantastic and we are excited that we were able to achieve that. “The Caribbean has been a popular destination for American sailors for a long time, but the hard core Southern Californian racers do not come here that often,” continued Ben Mitchell. “When you come here you realise how beautiful this course is, with fabulous wind conditions combined with warm water and weather. It’s a fantastic race area. As we saw with Wizard and now with Pyewacket 70, the Volvo 70s are well heeled for this course, which has plenty of windy reaching conditions.” #Caribbean600 #RORCracing
