#sailing #sailboats #budgetsailing #boatbuying #sailboatrestoration #sailingmaine #yachtdesign #sailboatdesign Join our crew! We'd appreciate the support: https://www.patreon.com/boatfoolssailing Sailboat design is an art. I feel like modern sailboat design has become homogenous. If you're looking for used sailboats, I make the case for classic plastic sailboats over modern plastic sailboats. I will also make the case that, depending on your budget, a classic plastic might actually be more affordable. Case in point, if you take out a $180,000 loan to finance your new sailboat, and finance it at 5% for 20 years - that boat will cost you $285,000 - in other words, you will pay $105,000 in interest over the life of the loan! Why not spend $50k, fix up an older boat, and have some $$$ left over for some rum? Makes good sense to me! Not only that, you will look much cooler on a fixed up classic! People will hate me for this episode, but that's ok. It's just my opinion. Plus, I am just getting over COVID which ruined my vacation and put me in a salty mood. Enjoy! Ok, so we have a winner for the hat! The list prices for the used classic boats shown in this video are as follows: The 1983 Bristol 45.5: $140,000 The 1993 Cape George 34: $139,000 The 1988 Ta Shing Tashiba 31: $69,900 The 1981 Baltic 42: $59,000 There some great deals out there for used sailboats!

North Pacific history changed 2 years ago. Year 1597 treasure laden Golden Hind sought the North West Passage. The Hind not Cook's ship Discovery in 1792 was the first in these north waters. The crew members of the Hind kept diaries revealing the re-supply stopovers. Payment to natives was gold/silver coin, excessively to earn acceptance for future British settlement plans. As well the ship was treasure overburdened needing to "stash" before attempting Arctic waters. Places of anchorage have been researched and mapped. This vid, a silver/gold metal detecting practice. The real adventure starts May/2023. Vids will be posted.
In this Video we sailing with owner Skip Armstrong, aboard his 1947, John G. Alden Yawl, off Waikiki. The conditions were fast and wild. The classic Yacht Criterion had no trouble making 12-14 knots ground speed, with near gale force winds, and messy surface conditions. We were moving so fast on this day that we ended up doing a few laps out to the Diamond Head Buoy and back before returning to port for dinner time. ** NOW SOLD ** Ragnar is a 2020 Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300. Designed by Daniel Andrieu and Guillaume Verdier and inspired by the foiling IMOCAs, the concept was to create a yacht that was versatile enough to be raced both inshore and offshore and simple enough that they can be fully crewed or easily sailed short-handed. Ragnar was launched in 2020 and comes highly specified with an Axxon Carbon mast and 200 litres of water ballast per side, comprised of two independent tanks; both emptied and filled individually using two separate pumps. Her working sails are primarily by Doyle Sails, she has a Code 0 also by Doyles, and A2 and A4 asymmetrical spinnakers by Irwin Sails. She has a comprehensive electronics package including two B&G Vulcan 7 GPS and a B&G H5000 Autopilot. Below deck, the clever design of the coachroof provides good headroom along the centreline, she has two large settee berths and two double aft cabins along with provision to fit pipe cots if necessary. There is a functional Navigation station and compact galley.
At approximately 19:00 UTC on 28th February 2023, Team Malizia were sailing in big waves with good wind conditions when they dropped the C0 sail in the water. The team quickly assessed that it had become unhooked and this was the reason for it falling. With darkness approaching and the big ocean swell, the team had to act quickly. Welcome back to Naval Gazing at Camp David. This week's guest yacht is one of the most beautiful and fast craft in its category The Dragonfly 40 retractable trimaran! Innovation Corner • Dragonfly 40 Web page: https://dragonfly.dk/dragonfly-40 • Arkema's recyclable liquid thermoplastic resin, Elium: https://www.arkema.com/global/en/resources/post/elium-resin-a-disruptive-innovation-in-the-world-of-composites/ o For information contact: Nicolas Valloir, Business Manager, 561 252 1909, nicolas.valloir@arkema.com Although I salute the leadership of Windelo in green boat building, the first thing I thought about, when I heard of their innovative fiber, was all that poisonous, unrecyclable vinylester resin that it is soaked in. Although beneficial, the effort seemed a little futile. Then my first subscriber and constant source of inspiration and information, Clive, pointed me in the direction of the answer. A new recyclable liquid thermoplastic resin called Elium, developed by Arkema (www.arkema.com). Although extremely new, Arkema's Elium has already caught the eye of the Beneteau group, the largest sailboat manufacturer in the world, and they have already started using it for two production boats, the Beneteau First 44e and the Oceanis 30.1e. To say that this is a strong endorsement is an understatement. Arkema's Elium: • Has an average material cost similar to a vinylester resin • A life span/durability the same as vinylester and epoxy • Has a weight similar to vinylester and epoxy • Has no special manufacturing requirements such as temp or humidity • Has resistance to osmosis similar to vinylester and epoxy …BUT, it can be separated from end of life structures, using several different techniques, and used again, having retained the same properties as virgin resin. What's more, given the adoption of this technology by major builders, volume production will go up and cost is most likely going to come down even further over the next five years. A liquid like the epoxy resins, Elium® resin allowed the same molds as for the thermoset composites to be used. But it required less energy consumption because the molds did not need to be heated and manufacturing was carried out at ambient temperature. A further advantage was that the part elements were assembled simply by gluing, with no added heat source, in contrast to thermoset gluing. It was even possible to assemble certain elements simply by thermowelding, allowing for considerable savings in terms of time and manufacturing costs. Speaking about winf turbine blade development, Arkema said, "Since then, we have made a new 13-meter prototype blade which has demonstrated a 20% savings in manufacturing time compared to epoxy blades," The company further stated that their many trials have proved conclusive. Arkema 3, one of several demonstration racing sailboats, has demonstrated equivalent mechanical performance to epoxy models, the top end of thermoset resins. Elium® resin even offers a slight advantage: it is slightly more resilient to the impact of waves, chunks of wood, etc., and returns to its original shape without losing its mechanical qualities in terms of energy recovery. Beside the already mentioned advantages, Elium does not contain any styrene which clearly improves safety in the workplace. • Basalt Fiber: http://www.eatc-online.org/wp-content/uploads/Combining-the-Best-of-Two-Polymer-Worlds_.pdf So now the resin issue is resolved in spectacular fashion, what about the fiber. E-glass is cheap and effective, but leave a gigantic carbon footprint in its manufacturing wake. Carbon fiber is just too expensive to be practical for all but the exotic builds. So what is left. Flax fiber adds weight, and that may be ok on a mono hull, it won't fill our needs for multihulls. The idea combination with Arkema's recyclable liquid thermoplastic resin, Elium is the same basalt fiber that Windelo has pioneered on their new 50 and 54 foot catamarans. • The basalt fiber can be fully recycled • Basalt rock is one of the main constituents of the ocean crust and is an abundant resource. No additives are needed to transform it, which reduces carbon emissions by 10. The fiberization process for basalt is more environmentally safe than that of glass fiber. • Basalt and E-glass fibers now have similar production costs, putting basalt and glass FRP products on similar pricing. • Basalt/epoxy sample's strength tested 13.7 percent higher than that of the E-glass sample and exhibited 17.5 percent greater stiffness, although the basalt sample was 3.6 percent heavier than the E-glass sample. The net result is higher strength and stiffness for the same weight. • Additionally, basalt fibers are naturally resistant to ultraviolet (UV) and high-energy electromagnetic radiation, maintain their properties in cold temperatures, and provides better acid resistance.

This is just a short video to recap the storm casualties that we had over the past weekend in Long Beach, CA. The extreme wind and weather took its toll on local sailboats as the storm ripped through Shoreline Marina and caused damage to my count of five head sails on neighboring sailboats. My brother in law Matt and I (Andy) went out and tried to help furl in a headsail that was flapping in the wind. This short video shows our attempt but failure. Bummer... Welcome to Sailing While One (s/v While One)! After years of planning, saving, debating, a pandemic, $30,000 of boating upgrades and deliberation on retirement, we've finally pulled the plug and left California. This has been a dream of mine for almost 20 years and it's taken every bit of that time for it to be realized (more on that in future episodes). But, after counting all of the beans, Sherine and I finally decided we could escape the rat race and retire. At an age of 55 and 54, respectively, we are fully cognizant of how lucky and fortunate we are. In this Episode we go back to October/November of 2022 when we left San Jose, CA to embark on a cross country roadtrip across the country to Mathews, VA where While One were stored on the hard since the prior June. We had driven about 3500 miles, visiting friends and family, until we finally got to Zimmerman Marina in Mathews, VA. Then the real work began. Moving on to the boat was way more challenging than I had imagined it would be. Finding places for all of our stuff while unpacking takes time...and tensions did rise at time, as you will see. Add to that, being nervous about being dropped in the water and needing to find a place to go with the possibility of high winds...yikes. We had a great time, we hope you enjoy this episode. Next episode, we'll get back to sailing and perhaps more recent footage....I'm so far behind! Thanks for watching! As The Ocean Race fleet heads further south, conditions change dramatically. The wind has finally arrived and the teams have begun criss-crossing to the east - however, the stronger winds also brings a punishing sea state for the crews to deal with. A bientôt! Pronti a Strambare!
