Our programmes encourage both New Zealanders and international Manuhiri to get active in the great outdoors.

But it was raised from an early grave and sold once more and renamed the Anna C. The last registered company to own the ship, the San Andres Export & Import Company in San Andres, Colombia, purchased the Doric Express in 1979 and gave it the now famous moniker, Hilma Hooker. Less than five years later, in the summer of 1984, the Hooker faced technical difficulties off the coast of Bonaire — whether problems with steerage or an engine failure is a matter of debate — and was towed into the main port of Kralendijk. Authorities became suspicious of the ship when the crew failed to produce papers for Customs immigrations officials, though, depending on whom you ask, it could also have been an inside tip or simply the ship’s colorful name that prompted the increased scrutiny. Though tales tend to disagree on what exactly was the key evidence that tipped off the authorities, the result of their search is consistent from one to the next: 25,000 pounds of marijuana were found stashed behind a false bulkhead. In this 22nd episode of Sailing SV Freelance we ride the current down the St. Mary’s River to the DeTour Passage, where the water from Lake Superior flows into Lake Huron. After spending the night at the peaceful DeTour Marina, we turned west towards the popular Mackinac Island, which is one of our favorite Great Lakes destinations. There’s so much to see and do at Mackinac Island, and it has an old time charm that’s difficult to overrate. Here are many great restaurants, impressive hotels, fun shops, famous historical sites, and beautiful nature. It’s also famous for banning motorized vehicles back in 1898, so people get around the island with horses and bicycles, or just by walking. We leave Deception Bay and make our way to Langii Gorge. It’s a difficult place to visit because you can’t get all of the tides in your favour, so we head in at high tide to see the rock formations. An advantage to going in at this time is that we are able to cruise down the gorge which is absolutely beautiful. We leave Langii and make our way to Montgomery Reef and the beautiful cascading waterfalls which appear when the tide drops. Then we pass the Iron Islands and head into The Gutter and down the notorious Koolan Channel with its strong tidal whirlpools. A quick stop at Silver Gull Creek to wash everything and it’s on to Crocodile Creek for the second time. Thanks for watching.
