Are we ready to sail across an Ocean? After more than one year of living on our sailboat, we are now getting closer to the next level of our sailing adventure: Crossing the Atlantic Ocean in our Off grid blue water Sailboat! It has been a tumultuous sailing season for us, but now it starts to dawn on us that things are getting real. We still have a lot of preparation ahead. And we have only limited time and a few stops left before setting out on our biggest adventure yet! Join us each week on Sailing SV CUBA as we try to overcome the challenges of our lives at sea in our pursuit to sail around the world. ⛵
Cyclone alert - will we lose everything? As sailors, we find ourselves often at the mercy of the elements and a lot more intune with the weather, often checking forecasts several times a day. The middle name of our son Nemo is Yasa, after the cyclone that hit Fiji whilst I was pregnant with him. For those of you that are knew here, we bought an old ex Vendée Globe open 60 and converted her into our family cruiser. We launched in September with the hope of being out of Fiji before cyclone season started… but we weren’t ready in time and instead have found ourselves still here in the peak of the season. On top of this a few weeks ago our gearbox broke and left us engineless with the next low pressure system developing close by… Due to our nearly 5 metre draft, the safest cyclone hole for us is about 100nm to the east in the capital suva - but due to our gearbox failure, our only option is to use our 25hp outboard engine to help manoeuvre the boat off the anchor and through the reef passes on route. At that moment we were about 48 hours away from the closest point of approach of the first system, and about 5 days before the second one would be close. So we’d still have time to move if we wanted to - but without an engine, we weren’t sure if that would be the safest solution. At the moment the systems weren’t headed for a direct hit for Fiji, but we remembered what happened to our friends on Pantagruel a few years ago during cyclone Yasa - whose track had also been to miss Fiji a few days before it hit, but in the end Fiji was a directly in it’s path But we were running out of time as the first system had now become a named cyclone Judy, which was getting closer, and there wouldn’t be a gap between that one and the one following close behind for us to escape to Suva. But it’s not over for us - as the next day - the next cyclone - Kevin - now Category 5 - changed track and headed closer to us… ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks so much to Olivia at https://www.youtube.com/c/WildernessofWaves for the clip of us coming onto the mooring and on the mooring in the bad weather :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water! Oita to Amami Part One. After a month of questioning my boat and then myself, I set my eyes on finally reaching Amami Oshima. It is the island near Okinawa I set out to sail to two years ago today ( March 4th). I diverted to Mei Prefecture because of a broken Auto Helm. I tried a second time last year and got as far as Southern Kyushu due to volcanic ash flooding the harbors, I was advised not to come. Finally, this is my third attempt. Our epic voyage across the Atlantic begins! We sail 575 nautical miles from Gibraltar to Porto Santo Island in the Atlantic Ocean. In this episode we explore the island and learn about Christopher Columbus who lived here with his wife, Felipa Perestrello, and their son, Diego. We also see evidence of climate change impacting Porto Santo. We learn how small islands are particularly vulnerable to land loss, extreme weather, as well as food and water insecurity due to climate change.

Team Malizia is currently sailing very close to the ice limit. This is a limit enforced by the race and one that can be moved during the race. The limit is obtained by looking at satellite 🛰 images and ascertaining where the ice is drifting to. The idea is to limit the boats sailing too close to potential icebergs as even a very small iceberg would damage the boat. Incidentally this can make the race longer or shorter. Due to the curvature of the Earth, the closer the boats sail to the Antarctic the shorter the race is. Climate change is also playing an interesting role here, the warmer temperatures occurring earlier is meaning that the ice is breaking off sooner and then actually drifting further north. For our race this only means a longer race course and carrying more food but the implications for rising sea levels and rising air temperatures is catastrophic!

One simply thinks, I'll buy a hurricane damaged catamaran, fix it and then sail the world, but then life happens. The dream of being a cruising sailor, the dream of sailing the tropics someday has to be put on hold. At least I've had the chance to sail Mexico, California (see the last episode), and now Thailand.
2300nm of motoring almost the entire loop of the ICW has brought us back to where it all started in Fort Lauderdale. We are shocked at the amount of motoring we have done and quickly start getting Zephyr ready for the sailing season ahead. We also make some big changes involving our tender and ability to store food on our sailboat. These changes will affect our lives in a dramatic way as we continue to live aboard our tiny home. Aquatic Park Cove is a human-made harbor that mimics a natural anchorage, offering a protected area for recreational swimming, sailing and rowing with a beautiful backdrop of one of San Francisco’s most prominent city fronts, such as Alcatraz Prison. Visiting the notorious prison has been on my bucket list since I was a kid, so I was stoked to get the opportunity to finally visit the rock. A short explanation regarding why there was no normal fortnightly episode put out today. Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress. There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,... However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,... I hope that you can join along with me! @BuildingSYMistress https://www.youtube.com/user/bmwfreedom https://www.symistress.com https://www.patreon.com/symistress https://www.paypal.me/symistress bmwfreedom@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/bruce.wilson.1481 Music thanks

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We go to Maryland's #1 lumberyard to find wood for our cabinet trim. But are they going to have what we're looking for? This week is a toss between a bunch of small things we've been doing here and there. Since most of our attention (in real life) is addressing the port hull to get it ready for primer, we thought we'd share a few small projects that have been going on for the past few weeks. Matt bonds in one of the bulkheads for our galley cabinets, and then begins work on the three drawers we'll have inside the boat (all in the galley). Then, he builds the face for Georgie's litter box area, a hidden away place which we *finally* decided on after thinking about it for the past year. And the part I have been the most excited about for the past few weeks...going to get the hardwood which will be the trim around all our cabinets. The lumber yard we go to has SO many beautiful pieces inside...but does it carry the one simple item we're requesting? We hope you enjoy! NEVER do boat work without a shake down cruise. NEVER do boat work (if you can help it) the day before you leave on a passsage. Thankfully, we were able to find the issue the next day (two wires that were not connected in our Lynx Shunt) and less than a week later, another weather window opened up. This time we staged half way down the Rio at Cayo Comodo and took off the next morning, leaving the Rio after 5.5 months! It felt so good and so strange. After half a year of total protection and rarely considering the weather, we were now at the mercy of storms and seas. It was a bit daunting, but thankfully we had a relatively benign passage other than half a dozen squalls. Arriving in Utila was momentous for us as it was the start of our journey towards the Panama Canal and a new sailing season in unfamiliar territory. #sailing #GUATEMLA #RIODULCE #yanmar NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Do some Catamaran Sailing in the remote islands of Baja Mexico in the Sea of Cortez where our trusty LOTUS keeps us safe during heavy winds, we explore salt mines and abandoned ghost towns, and this sailing family is locked inside for 36 hours while we wait out the next
This episode is a quick flash back to when we dropped anchor at South Stradbroke Island, what an epic spot! Believe or not, I have a flying machine stored on the catamaran and it’s the first time that I had flown for over a year. I forgot to zip my pocket up, resulting in me dropping my iPhone 400 feet, in flight. It was in a LifeProof Case, which saved it from breaking 😯. It turned itself off from the impact but still works to this day! I had a Chase Cam and Go-Pro attached to my Paramotor to capture most of the footage. ✨WANT TO SEE MORE CRAZY adventures of us 4WD in remote locations, spearing & diving or sailing our way around Australia? This clip show’s Geoff Bishop’s King 40 CHECKMATE finishing the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s 2023 Island race with the A1 and staysail. According to Bishop, “The A1 got a workout yesterday and performed to perfection, along with the team.” CHECKMATE won her class under IRC and PHS in the 39-mile race off the west coast of Australia. The winds we mostly light, which kept the bigger boats from being able to plane away. Sail changes between the code zero, A1 and A2 were the way of the day, which is why Bishop gave so much credit to his crew and his inventory of UK Sailmakers sails. Well done to the other UK Sailmakers clients who featured in the results from Ocean Racing WA and Royal Perth Yacht Club Island Race. 3rd "Obssesion" Paul Arns PHS Division 2 1st PHS "Baci" Dominic Delatti 3rd PHS "Moneypenny" Malcolm Thompson. Day two of the 44Cup Oman started off sedate as forecast, but finished with the wind gusting to 20 knots, providing further ‘yeehaa’ moments for the nine crews as they clung on, blasting off on the downwinds into the building sea state. After six races and at the half way stage of the 44Cup Oman, there is a new leader.

The most ambitious Bluegame project: not a simple chase boat, but the first foil-equipped multihull completely powered by hydrogen propulsion. A concept boat that will flank the New York Yacht Club American Magic during the 37th America's Cup to be held in Barcelona in 2024. The future is here and it’s called BGH.
