We leave St. Martin and sail over to St. Kitts to start exploring a new country. The trade winds end up being really strong, so we try to find different ways to cope with it by taking land excursions and exploring the rich history of this island. It did not disappoint. We spent time in the main town of Basseterre, snorkeled in a few spots, then rented a car and managed to visit Fairview Great House, Romney Manor, Wingfield Estate Sugar Plantation Ruins, Brimstone Hill Fortress, and Black Rock. After the most amazing few days spent mostly in the water at Tobago Cays it was time to head across the Mayreau, an island about 45 minutes sail away. Mayreau is the smallest inhabited island of the Grenadines, with an area of about 0.46 sq. miles and a population of about 271.The population is centered in an unnamed village, located on Station Hill, a hilltop in the south-west of the island. It is an isolated community, accessible only by boat. Electricity was only recently (2002) provided by a central generator located on Saline Bay. There is a single-lane concrete road leading from the wharf on Saline Bay through the village to Saltwhistle Bay. The top of the island is crested with the small elementary school; the telecommunications building; the brick and stone Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, christened on May 12, 1930, and a Pentecostal church. From the crest of the hill behind the Catholic Church, there is an overlook of the Tobago Cays, Canouan and Union Island. We set our anchor in Saline Bay and rested for the first time in days 😆. Mayreau is so tiny that we walked the entire length of it, in a couple of hours. We explored about 80% of its circumference and its really beautiful. From the stunningly beautiful bays, to the view across to Tobago Cays from the islands high point behind a quaint beautiful church, we had a great few days exploring before heading back to Union Island to catch up with fellow cruisers again.

Leaving Docklands we tuck into the protected anchorage at Mornington to wait for weather to head further south. We find many restaurants and pubs, a jetty to make getting off and on our tender pleasant with no wet feet, and have a quick visit from Troy on his quick trip back to Australia. We visit Martha Cove and are astounded at the number of boats enjoying the water and cross our first ever canal crossing where the vehicles travel beneath us. WHO ARE WE? We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. While Nico Poons’ Charisma, the 2022 44Cup Champion, is the event’s runaway leader at the 44Cu, albeit still catchable, on day three of the 44Cup Oman several other teams had the opportunity to shine. After an hour’s delay waiting for the wind to build, the race area off Muscat’s Al Mouj Marina for a third day offered the nine teams competing at the 44Cup Oman perfect conditions, starting with 8 knots and building into the teens for the final race.

All 5 teams made significant progress in the last couple of days towards their respective goals. Facing adversity and overcoming it lies at the heart of The Ocean Race and especially of this immense Southern Ocean Leg. When Dreams Become a Reality! We can’t believe this day has finally arrived! We have been working tirelessly on our 2001 Hunter for the past 11 months with a dream and a goal of traveling the world with her. Ok, maybe not the world right off the bat, but to the Bahamas for starters. There were days that made us want to give up and throw in the towel and days that made us feel like we could fix anything. We learned how to communicate with each other better and be more understanding when trying to deal with the situation at hand. We have touched almost every last bolt, screw, hinge, gasket, and the list goes on and on. We feel so safe on our floating home and we can’t wait to see what are Honu can do and the places we will go. It's funny when you finally have a set date and time, a deadline for leaving, and all the sudden you can remember all the crazy stuff that you wanted to do but never got around to. I think it has something to do with that fear of untethering and finally letting go. It is not easy to take that jump for the first time.
