This hasn't gotten any less SCARY for us 🙈 Even though it's our 9th time pulling Delos out of the water, it's still such a nerve racking experience...there are just so many things that can go really really wrong. You’re basically asked to steer your boat into a narrow, concrete like bunker with a gigantic machine looming over head. There’s usually some old tires and rusty bits of metal waiting to impale your vessel should anything go wrong. So you approach slowly and if you have timed the tides correctly you glide over the slings, and stop just before ramming your bow into the wall, or your forestay into the machine’s cross brace (both of which are considered bad form 😂 ) As the machine tightens the slings and starts to take the weight, it’s a surreal experience to feel yourself and your boat lifted out of the water supported by only a few straps and pins. Hauling Delos out of the water marks the end of our 11th season of sailing. It feels like SO LONG ago that we cast the lines in Shelter Bay and began the 3,000+ mile journey from the Panama Canal up to the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. Our time being back in the Pacific ocean has pretty much mirrored what we've found to be true about cruising in general- alternating between the highest highs and the lowest lows, sometimes even simultaneously. While we'd had some pretty big challenges during this time (Hurricanes, Salmonella poisoning, and basically the entire coast of Costa Rica spring to mind) overall it's been a pretty special and unforgettable season for us, and just seeing how much Sierra has grown and developed during this time is pretty mind blowing! But it feels great to close another chapter and make way for an exciting new one as we prepare to cross the Pacific Ocean again! We are half way via Suez Canal Transit. As we were coming to Ismailia we were hoping that we will be able to anchor since we broke bow thruster in Suez Yacht Club. Also - we did not checked in into Egypt therefore we can not leave the boat. We also did not plan to purchase fuel as we heard it's quite expensive in Ismailia. Luckily we saw anchorages right next to the marina and that's where we're hoping to drop the hook. After multiple explanations why we can’t come to marina we were denied the anchorage and insisted to come in the marina. Last week on the World on Water, we saw how Boris Herrmann on Malizia have a halyard failure, and his head sail fell into the ocean, ahead of his foiling Imoca. One of the associated  problems with this, was the halyard tore a section in the top of the mast. This is how they  fixed the mast in the rolling Southern Ocean. This is the Sailing World on Water for March 10 2023. Highlights of the sport of Sailing, Globally, in the last seven days. While Nico Poons’ Charisma, the 2022 44Cup Champion, is the event’s runaway leader, albeit still catchable, on day three of the 44Cup Oman several other teams had the opportunity to shine. 1st Qualifier in the British Iluka 6 can be considered that it is done and dusted. Jon Emmett the British Master Coach and Ilka 6 Champion chats with Sam Whaley and Ben Elvin both also from Great Britain. Congratulations Jon. Who would have thought this, but Emirates Team New Zealand has announced that their Cyclors are back. But it's not just hours on the bike, everyone plays a role in getting Te Rehutai back on the water. After several days of preparation, the first race day at the 43rd St Maarten Heineken Regatta saw the competitors streaming out through the lifting bridge into the open waters of Simpson Bay. The day’s courses were designed to send the fleet to the windward side of the island, and the wind delivered more than the low teens forecasted. In the opening race on the fourth day of racing in the 44 cup, Peninsula Racing was the runaway winner. This compressed the leaderboard points but only slightly, with Ceeref coming home second and Charisma fourth. As result Charisma finished eighth, while another second for Ceeref caused Igor Lah’s team to take the lead by one point   The presence of more than 1000 competitors plus families, friends and supporters at the 43rd St Maarten Heineken Regatta is creating a stir not only onshore, but also on the water, as Day Two’s racing took most of the sailors over to the French side of the island.

After days on end of harsh conditions, the fleet finally experienced a bit of a lull allow both boat and bodies to get a rest and a checkup. Dan and Theresa Godbout sailed their Beneteau 331 down the St-Lawrence to Baie Comeau and back to Kingston in June 2019. His talk will give you an overview and the highlights of this amazing 6 week trip. Dan has been a member of Nepean Sailing Club since September 2003, but started sailing much earlier! “My sailing endeavours started a long time ago at age 11. My father bought a Snark sunflower from the Eaton’s catalog (for the younger crowd, this is the precursor of Amazon when Sears and Eaton had the monopoly on mail order). He taught both my brother and I how to sail and let us use the boat on our own several afternoons a week on a small city lake in Baie Comeau, as long as we kept our life jackets on. We complied and both enjoyed sailing; we were hooked.” “I bought my first keelboat (Shark #138) in Summer 1985, sailing for 2 years from the Rockliffe Yacht Club. I sold the boat in 1987 and move to BC for work. I continued sailing dinghys (420s and Albacores) on Cultus Lake in Chilliwack and took a coastal cruising course and sailed a Bayfield 32 out of Vancouver. I moved back to this end of the country in 1990 and stayed away from sailing for several years (3 kids, one salary). I finally got back into sailing in 2003 when Doug Patterson convinced me to buy a Tanzer 22. I have sailed and raced “Sherrie” at NSC for 19 years. Although we were finally doing very good at racing “Sherrie”, I’m now a co-owner of a J22 “Jetstream” and am ready to get my ass kicked once again in the J22 fleet.” Theresa and Dan acquired a Sabre 28 for cruising in 2006 and upsized their “cruising cottage” to a Beneteau 331 in 2012. They moved the Beneteau to Kingston in 2016 and enjoyed sailing Lake Ontario and the Thousand Island for 4 years. They brought the boat back to NSC in 2020 since they couldn’t go anywhere because of COVID but are quite happy to “sail the Ottawa River once again and enjoy cruising with friends.” This presentation is part of the NSC Winter Speaker’s program, which promotes ongoing learning about all things nautical, as well as cruising and competitive sailing.
