When buying an older sailboat, one of the first things you (or your surveyor) should check is the lifelines. Older boats tend to have plastic coated stainless steel lifelines. Over time these crack or chafe allowing water to get in and do what water does best: corrode. In this episode we replace our old plastic-coated sailboat safety lines with uncoated 1x19 stainless steel. We debated whether to go with Dyneema, but decided stainless was the way to go for us. But both are great and both have pros and cons. Our old lifelines were an accident waiting to happen. Glad to have this completed. A video showing the 2023 DF65 (Dragon Force) and DF95 (DragonFlite) Traveller Trophy event held at SouthPort by the West Lancs Yacht Club on the 4th & 5th March 2023 This event is part of a series of Model Yacht Racing events for DF65 & DF95 classes held once a month at various locations across the UK during 2023. This is the first TT event of 2023 and is sailed on the Marine Lake at Southport. The DF65s (DragonForce) raced on Saturday and DF95s (DragonFlite) on the Sunday. There was a large entry of 49 DF65s and 54 DF95s on Sunday. The 2023 DF65 TT events will count towards qualification for the Global Event to be held in Sweden in 2024. Radio Sailing (Model yacht racing) is a competitive form of yacht racing run along similar lines to dinghy racing and keelboat racing. ----- Model yacht racing is a sport in which miniature sailboats are raced against each other in a controlled environment such as a pond, lake, or indoor swimming pool. Model yachts can be made of various materials such as wood, fiberglass, or plastic, and are powered entirely by using the wind. In this video, we share our experience of receiving a Tsunami warning while living on our catamaran off the coast of New Zealand. We heard the warning sirens blaring and were immediately faced with a potentially life-and-death decision. Despite an evacuation order, we made the quick decision to move our boat to a safer location. A magnitude 8.1 earthquake had hit the Kemadec Islands off the coast of New Zealand, triggering a Tsunami warning. We were unsure of how big the Tsunami would be, but we knew we had to act fast. The question remained, was our decision to move the boat to a safer location the right one? Following the Tsunami warning, we took a break from work to upgrade our boat and explore the northernmost part of New Zealand. Through this video, we hope to share our experience and offer some insight into how to deal with a Tsunami warning when living on a boat. We are trying so very hard not to bore you with more videos of us just fairing and sanding, although that is basically what is taking up 90% of our time right now. And although more primer should be going on very very soon, we didn't think you'd be interested in our groundhog day of perfecting the guest hull for that to happen. So, in this week's episode, we focus on a smaller project of the holding tank coming in for our master head. We have been debating for so long what we wanted to do on this side, since spaces are limited and odd shaped. Eventually, we ordered a prefabricated one. And it actually fits into one of our open spaces pretty well. But, after now dealing with the extra weight that comes with it and the extra projects to secure it in place, would we have been better off just building one like we did on the port side? For a little added fun, we do let ourselves out an hour early one night to go hang with our friends of Ryan and Sophie sailing, now they are back in Annapolis. We sailed through the Atlantic Ocean from Hampton, VA in the Chesapeake to the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean on our Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran. We had to postpone the Gulf Stream crossing by a couple of days and tucked into Beaufort / Morehead City. It was a rough sail in bad weather (for us). The Bermuda Triangle did not disappoint and kept us on our toes. Thanks to Starlink, we were able to download frequent weather reports and FaceTime with our kids which made it more bearable. We loved the amazing diving found right off the back of your boat in West End, Roatan. Diving, in general, was easy and convenient in this area. Tank refills were $4 (4 tanks in 6 minutes) and Mares also had a fully stocked store and workshop for repairs. They were the nicest people to work with too. The town of West End is small and quaint with some good food options. Our favorite was Sandy Buns. We LOVED the brisket sandwich and top on the list was the cinnamon bun and breakfast sandwiches. The Nautilus Marine Sydney Harbour Regatta was held last weekend and Bow Caddy was out on Sunday to capture the action. In a building nor’easter breeze and in great light we commenced filming on the offshore Manly Circle course and then moved through the harbour trying to capture as many fleets and boats as possible. We really put Stuart Don, our boat driver, to the test moving through an extremely busy and choppy harbour. Thank you Middle Harbour Yacht Club for the commission.
