#192 ✍️L’arrivée a été intense ! Notre ancre n’était encore pas enfouie dans le sable, que déjà, les pirogues en bois de manguier et les kayaks, transportaient depuis la plage, leurs occupants jusqu’à nous. La baie à Feret est large, protégeant de sa forme fer à cheval des vents à dominance sud. Bordée du village de Kay-Kok, l’anse a tous les atouts pour nous séduire. À la faveur de nos années de voyage, c’est exactement comme cela que nous l’imaginions et je crois que l’expérience de notre baroudage, va nous être d’un grand concours pour appréhender et vivre cette escale hors du commun sans frustration d’incompréhension. Je m’explique : par ignorance comportementale, on peut, en certains lieux, être surpris par la conduite des locaux, pouvant être interprétée, quand on n’y est pas préparé, comme une agression ! Mais essayez de vous mettre à la place des autochtones, et imaginez, comment notre attitude à nous, est perçut. Les débuts de notre aventure en bateau, nous ont amené en 2010, au Vanuatu, puis en Papouasie. Nous n’avions alors, aucunes idées de ce qui nous attendait sur place et encore moins de l’attitude que nous devions adopter envers la population. Nous avions ainsi, abordé ces contrées, en laissant s’exprimer nos ressentis, sans vraiment savoir quelle était la bonne conduite à adopter, ou du moins quelles erreurs étaient à ne pas commettre pour ne pas se laisser envahir. Un apprentissage, sans conteste, extrêmement enrichissant qui nous a enseigné de grandes valeurs, dont celle du troc. Le principe est simple, offrir et recevoir, plutôt que vendre et acheter, et surtout dans des lieux défavorisés, échanger plutôt que donner ! Il y a, en cela, une idéologie que j’affectionne particulièrement basée sur la confiance de l’autre, l’entraide et surtout, dans ces lieux dénués, le respect de la dignité. Ainsi, nous accostons les Ile-à-vachois, avec en tête notre formation passée et la priorité de notre mission : apporter à l’orphelinat de sœur Flora, les dons que nous avons récolté à Saint-Martin. De villages isolés, en villes fréquentées, de localités authentiques, en zones touristiques, nous avons découvert avec tristesse qu’inévitablement, lorsque le tourisme est présent, l’argent prend le dessus sur les relations humaines. Malheureusement, il semble que chacun y trouve son compte. Les vacanciers, qui par manque de temps préfèrerons payer pour en voir et en faire le maximum et les locaux, qui par soucis économique, on autre chose à faire que créer des liens ! Mais en grand voyage, l’approche est tout autre, et quand on passe après le visiteur « aux dollars faciles », le choc peut-être affligent ! Pris pour des portefeuilles embuant, il devient tout naturel de venir réclamer à l’étranger, les dollars tant convoités ! Sauf que voilà, nous ne sommes pas des vacanciers, mais des voyageurs et cela change considérablement la donne. Nous ne pouvons distribuer à tout va, de l’argent aux uns et aux autres ! Et même si nous avions les moyens, nous ne le ferions pas de cette façon. Nous fixons alors, nos règles dès le départ pour assurer des relations saines et sans équivoques. Sur cette base, tout redevient évident et les rapports sans malentendus permettent de vrais échanges. Le dialogue s’installe, les témoignages de chacun sont sans filtre. Nous apprenons sur les-dites règles locales, par exemple : il est d’usage, quand un bateau arrive à l’ile à vache, que le premier sur les lieux, soit celui qui est la priorité de s’en occuper, mais tout ça n’est qu’officieux. Chacun, et c’est normal, essai de tirer parti de l’opportunité qui se présente. Tous ont des rêves d’enfant et de l’espoir dans les yeux ! De l’espérance, une femme en a apporté ici, sur cette ile oubliée. C’est sœur Flora Blanchette. Ici, tout le monde la connait et pour cause. Cette religieuse québécoise a consacré sa vie à soigner des enfants handicapés, à recueillir des orphelins, à scolariser des enfants et à dispenser une formation aux jeunes filles. Nous venons d’arriver avec Vildo et le capitaine de l’embarcation motorisée à Madame-Bernard, le village principal de l’ile. C’est Vildo, un des plus ancien de Kay-Kok, qui nous a tout organisé jusqu’ici. Aujourd’hui est jour de marché. La place publique est pleine, en majorité des femmes. Certaines font leurs achats, d’autres vendent leurs productions. Nous sommes les seuls étrangers. Un âne nous passe à côté. Avec les petites motos chi-noises, ce sont les uniques moyens de locomotion de l’île. En haut de la petite côte, non loin de l’embarcadère, sous les arbres, se situe l’orphelinat de Saint-François d’assise. Juste en face, de l’autre côté du sentier, se trouve l’école. Elle aussi est une œuvre de la sainte femme de ces lieux. Les besoins de l’établissement sont de première nécessité : de la nourriture et des médicaments pour subvenir à la soixantaine de pensionnaires....

Nach der Überfahrt über den Atlantik beginnt in der Karibik wieder das normale Bordleben. Seit Mitte November hatten wir immer Freunde an Bord. Also fast ein Vierteljahr. Jetzt richten wir die Dilly-Dally erstmal wieder auf Mann-Frau-Hund-Betrieb um. Zusammen mit den Freunden von der Strawanza mieten wir ein Auto und besichtigen die Insel - oder vielmehr eine der bekanntesten Rum-Destillerien. Und dann segeln wir weiter, gen Norden, entlang der malerischen Westküste Martiniques. Doch nicht immer ist alles eitel Sonnenschein.

Ain't Nothin' Gonna Hold Us Down Before we left the safety and security of our happy marina home in Virginia we thought that we had secured all of our systems and we were ready for the next adventure. But as boat life goes you need to be prepared for anything. We are so lucky that we were on the east coast when our electrical malfunction happened. There are so many spots to tuck into and usually there are a couple of techs on hand. Beaufort, NC was a godsent for us. We were able to line an engine tech up on the way into the marina and he was fantastic. Justin at Beaufort Marine Services was supper knowledgeable and was kind enough to answer all of our question till we fully understood our issues. He recommended we upgrade to a Balmar alternator and not go with the stock one. Reason being when we do decide to upgrade our batteries to lithium in the future, we won’t need to change out the alternator once again as it has a programable external regulator that can be set for many different types of batteries. Smart purchase, but a very expensive one that we didn’t budget for this year. As well, if you remember our Northerlights generator decide that it was going to act up just as we need it along the way. Justin, made a quick call and we had a tech, Brooks at Heyland Heavy Equipment & Marine Repair on our boat and deducing the issue in about 30 minutes. Luckily it was just some bad connector cables and we were good to go. Both Justin and Brooks were very professional and extremely efficient. We would highly recommend them if you are having any electrical, motor or generator issues in the Beaufort area. So now that we are all patched up, charged up, and running like new again it’s time to get this show on the road and continue our journey south, heading for that Bahamian water. We feel lucky that our major boat issue happened so early on in our trip and we should be good to go with our power from here on out! Be careful so you not flood the engine with cooling water through the exhaust system! If you need to crank the engine a lot this can happens. The easy and safe way is to remove the belt from the water pump. After renovation you have to fill the fuel pipe and maybe have to crank a lot. Follow the manual for the engine, but use the start engine to bleed at the injector. After that tight the nut and hand crank the engine, then you get the sound of the injection as a confirmation that alla air is out of the system. The sound in the video is not the right one, it should be much shorter. It's not on the video, but you should loosen the nut at the injector before you lose at the pump to bleed the delivery valve. I have done all possible errors and here comes the list. - Don't crank the engine until all nuts at the injection pump are tighten. If you crank you let air in. - It's not possible to check the bleeding at the delivery valve, the pipe must be there to not let air in. - The delivery valve (the black nut at the injection pump) must be firmly tighten. Harder than on the video. - You need only to get some fuel out at the delivery valve. A lot and you have probably let air in. - Listen for the small noice after you have tighten the nut at the injector and crank the engine manual (with the de-compression activated) the fuel system is air free. - If the engine is hard to crank manual you have not decompressed it fully - If you have had the small noice and the engine don't start something else is wrong. - It's easy to bleed the air out. The only thing which might be hard is to fill the fuel pipe, but when you have got fuel out at the loosen nut at the injector that is ready. To hand crank to fill the pipe is near to impossible, only small drops of fuel comes at each turn of the engine.

Our 1981 Gulfstar 39 Sailmaster has a fully encapsulated modified fin keel with a skeg hung rudder. The positive points of this design is that it’s very sea kindly. She takes a great sea and with hef 43% ballast/displacement ratio, she’s a very stiff boat. True Love is heavily laid up and weighs in at just over eleven tons when fully loaded. Due to her modified fin keel, shallow draft, and longer waterline, particularly for the time she was built, she sails well on all points of sail, but doesn’t excel in any point of sail. She doesn’t point high up into the wind and she’s not particularly fast, down wind. But off the wind, in 15-20 knots of wind she’s a 7-7.5 knot boat. With the tide and in the right conditions, we’ve topped 10 knots.
