This week we get out of the tent and onto the water, as we help the guys from Kentmorr to bring in a boat for demolition.  It's anchored up the Severn River, across the Chesapeake Bay, so the 4 of us load up onto Tucker's trawler to grab it. As we hear more about it from Alex along the way, Matt and I begin to wonder, 'If this boat is in decent enough shape...maybe we can take it!!'.  It's not an uncommon thing around this marina, for boats scheduled for demolition, to be snatched up by another person as a project boat.  In fact, Tucker's trawler we're on was the same case! After attaching a bridle to the sailboat and towing it back over to Kentmorr, Matt and I are able to get onboard and give this old Hunter sailboat a good look around to see if it could be a potential home.  Getting inside though, we notice it would need A LOT of work!! EP 221: Sailing with a broken knee 🦵 Since we we're in St Maarten which is considered the more built up island of the Caribbean, we opted to go to the doctor to see if we could get Ricky's "what we though was a torn meniscus" sorted. We booked an appointment for surgery which ended up being part of his bone had lost blood supply and was dead which had to be removed and the floating piece of cartilage had to be removed as well. 2 surgeries later.. We had a blast hanging out with Sailing Sunday as well. Thank goodness for them or we would have lost our minds here in St Maarten all alone. We had an AMAZING 2 weeks in West End and upon arrival in French Harbor, realized how good it had been; French Harbor was the complete antithesis, so we picked up anchor and we sailed to Cayos Cochinos. Cayos was West End on steroids with pristine reefs, incredible animal life, clean water, very few boats, and great protection from all but a West wind. We vowed to stay here as long as we could. Every day we were in the water, diving or snorkeling and enjoying the sea life and reef. This place is truly paradise. Since heading off into the ocean, our tiny sailboat has seen depths of up to 10,000 feet! It is wild to think that there is so much water below our little boat. Most of the time you don't think about it so literally but on our passage to Spanish Wells on the island of Elerthera, Parker gets hit with the reality of how deep the water really is. Our passage goes smoothly from the Berry Islands, and Seawind enters the cut and into Spanish Wells. We find ourselves at a beautiful dock surrounded on one side by mangroves, and the other side filled with homes. This new place feels different from the other Bahamian islands we've visited. This episode ends with us baking some crackers with our sourdough starter, and having a lovely dinner aboard our floating home. September 16-17 52°24’08.9″N 4°53’17.4″E Sail from Lake Markermeer Lake to Amsterdam Marina (Sept.16): 16nm 4hrs Light winds Partly cloudy It was a short trip over to the Amsterdam canal & we were excited to see the city. There were a few things to be aware of on our way over though. The canal is a highway for cargo ships, so there were many to steer clear of. This we knew of beforehand. What we didn’t think of were all the passenger vessels crossing back & forth over the canal at a frequent rate. We had to dodge many & almost got hit by one! We were amazed at the many amusing buildings along the canal and noticed a huge swing on the top of a skyscraper as we motored in. A fellow sailor recommended we stay at the Amsterdam Marina in the middle of the city, and we were satisfied with this choice. It’s always nice to know exactly where to go in such a busy area! We were planning to move on the next day, so we took a quick sight-seeing tour right away. We just needed to take the canal-taxi over to the other side to experience downtown Amsterdam. The taxi itself had a lane for bikes/mopeds and a lane for pedestrians. We were overwhelmed by the amount of bikes everywhere when we got off the taxi boat! They were EVERYWHERE! And, there were even traffic lanes & traffic lights specifically for directing cyclists. We felt a little lost not knowing the traffic rules & it was hazardous just trying to cross a sidewalk – we not only had to look out for cars, but also bikes…and they rode fast, without helmets! In Norway, we are used to everyone wearing helmets. We usually love cycling, but we absolutely did NOT feel comfortable doing it here – someone was BOUND to crash! 😉 We had a lot of fun looking around in the narrow streets & over the canals, though. We noticed that the “coffee” shops offered things a little STRONGER than caffeine ;). The boys got a little cultured, you could say. There was everything from water-pipe cafés to mushroom shops to laughing gas at a souvenir shop to cannabis brownie shops! We're continuing sailing up into the arctic, aiming to get up to the high latitude of 80 degrees north. In this video, we finally make it to Svalbard, arriving in Longyearbyen. We get to grips with anchoring next to calving glaciers in the fjords and dealing with the ice hitting the boat. We encounter a juvenile Minky whale, and some Killer Arctic Terns and pay a visit to the world's most northerly town (and pub) of Ny Alesund. All music for the video was provided by Josh Woodward.
