On today’s podcast, we are welcoming back a familiar face to our regular listeners. Mike Malekoff. Mike was a guest back in episodes 66, 72 & 73. When we first met Mike, the goal for him and his wife was to sail from Lake Champlain in Vermont to the Bahamas. In each episode, we have followed their progress. Back in EP-66, Mike was in the “dreaming and planning” stages for the trip. In EP-72, Mike shared with us the casting off of the lines in Burlington VT, and heading South via the Champlain canal to the Hudson River. In EP-73 Mike talked about the trip down the East coast to Beaufort, NC. Our most recent discussion is broken into 2 episodes. During our conversation, Mike was in the cockpit of his boat at a marina in the Bahamas. They had some challenges in this leg of the journey so make sure you listen to both EP-77 and EP-78. If you would like to support the podcast, we now have a Patreon page. Just go to Patreon.com/sailingtheeast. Our podcast is now also available on YouTube, just search for “Sailing the East” https://www.youtube.com/@sailingandcruisingtheeast We love to hear from you, our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. If you know someone that would be an interesting guest on the show, please reach out to us and let us know—wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Bela and Mike

After a short visit to the Whitsunday Islands, we leave Airlie Beach and push on North towards our cyclone season base in Townsville. The first stop along the way is at the sailor friendly Cape Gloucester Eco Resort. Then we have a very busy day pulling in a bag full of tasty mackerel sailing to our final anchorage of the season at Cape Upstart.

I recently spent a week bobbing around the Atlantic ocean with P&O cruises on their Azura ship. It was a cheap cruise - single occupancy of a balcony cabin with flights and transfers would have cost well under £1,000 had we not chosen to add a drinks package.... And I had a great time! Despite the experience P&O offered... I find it hard to believe that this is the standard P&O offering - I wager it would be different if you boarded their shiny new Arvia ship - and there were a number of ways that P&O admitted that they had done things to save money... In this video I'll explain what happened and give my thoughts on why P&O did this... I think P&O is making a big mistake by taking this approach... Although this video has been on my channel for some time it was originally uploaded as two "shorts" and so some viewers may have missed them. Thus I have combined them into one, both showing catamarans sailing at speed whilst towing a "vessel". Just, in the case of the first video! The second part shows one of my 8ft Crayfish designs being towed at speed behind a 25ft Sango catamaran. This boat was home built in Portland, USA and is seen here being sailed in Mexico - a long way to trail the boat! You can see more on the Sango here https://www.sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/2-catamarans-under-25ft/160-sango and Crayfish here https://www.sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/46-beach-cats-and-dinghies/1-crayfish-8 And following is the text for the first video: We had an interesting final sail on Peter's Firebird in the most wind I sailed in when in Barbados - we sailed with 2 reefs. Peter's friend Eric has a foiling wakeboard and he wanted to foil behind the Firebird. In the end he managed it, but there was lots of falling in at the beginning. It was hard work for Peter and I as we had to start at near zero speed, so Eric could grab the tow rope, then slowly accelerate to about 7 knots so he could get ready for lift off. Then accelerate to 10 knots very quickly, so he could lift out. And then control the speed at 10-12 rather than surge up to 15-18. But of course the wind would drop, or he'd fall in or.... but, as I say, after 2 hours he did manage to fly for maybe 30 secs. Although, if we were quick enough, we could stop and heave to after he fell in, sometimes we sailed on too far and then we had to pull in the tow rope (we discovered it was too easy to get it entangled on rudders and daggerboards), tack round and sail back. As always it was scary how quickly a head disappears from view. But interestingly we could easily see him when he was in the sun, it was when he was north of us that he became invisible (one of his sons kept a very close eye on Dad, religiously pointing to his position). Flat water helped, and lots of passing day charter cats got a bit confused by seeing a swimmer apparently a mile out to sea but happily waving!

These are the most important lessons learned from a 7 year sailing adventure. On one hand it seems like we've come so far but on the other, we've only just begun!
A couple of dives at probably the best Manta cleaning station I've ever dived on. Family divers. Rasdhoo island. Maldives.
Join us this week on Sailing Nendaz as I get to work solving the problem of a leaky coolant water pump. There is a seal on the shaft bearing made of ceramic, and apparently it can be very sensitive to rust particles or limescale deposits according the manufacturer . The shaft seal has failed meaning our engine is very slowly leaking coolant into the bilge. So in this episode I aim to thoroughly flush the engine with radiator chemical flushes, and a hose pipe in the hope of properly cleaning out the coolant circuit. This video is hopefully useful for anybody with a Perkins Prima M50 or Volvo MD22L. It gives you a good guide on how to replace the coolant pump and dismantle the timing belt assembly to do so. For those that don't know the Perkins Prima M50 is exactly the same engine as the Volvo MD22L but with a different paint job. We both love and hate the Chesapeake Bay. It's where we learned to sail, but it's mud brown waters won't be missed! In this video we take a few days to get to the bottom of the bay. Along the way we hide from Hurricane Nicole, test our @RainmanDesal watermaker, and buy a bunch of provisions before we start the ICW south. With boat works officially over and the sailing season now started, Mother Nature wastes no time reminding us that she's the boss and we are visitors amongst the oceans and seas. We set sail to the Exumas and before we can spend even one day we are forced to find a safe anchorage to wait out a cold front with 30kt winds. Fortunately we are able to tuck in safely to the famous Norman´s Cay before the winds arrive. Things get a little spicy as the wind sets in and some boats are forced to re-anchor. The wind passes quickly and we enjoy a great sail south to Cambridge Cay where we can enjoy beautiful beaches. Hope you enjoy the video! I FINALLY get to REMOVE the 'X8' Post-it notes work! Ongoing work on the engine box-companionway steps progresses really well; the replacement V berth battens and panels come out fantastic and are a HUGE improvement and I also add more insulation to this area; and I get another lovely little trim piece installed! Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress. There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,... However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,... We're starting to wonder if we've bitten off more than we can chew 😬 Haul outs are always a struggle, so we really shouldn't be suprised at this point that everything always takes way longer and turns out to be more difficult than planned. We had our trip booked to Sweden already to visit Kazza's family, and we wanted to get as much done as possible while Ryan was still there to help, so with the clock ticking we put our heads down and went for it (with of course a few minor moments of distraction when a dune buggy was calling my name...) But ready or not, we make the long journey to Sweden which was soooo amazing. We didn't film a whole lot while we were there because we wanted to take the time to focus on family and have a much needed break from filming and sharing everything all the time, but it was truly a special trip for us. Sierra absolutely loved getting in some quality time with Mormor, seeing snow for the first time, and just generally having time and space to run around and explore. We were able to really recharge our batteries, which was great because we still had a lottttt of boat work waiting for us when we returned to Mexico! I Quit my Job to go Sail around the World.. and in this video we'll tell you how much Sailing Costs us! This was one of the hardest parts for me, figuring out how much money was needed to go Sail the World. So from the very beginning I knew I would make this video, so I could help others with their budget planning for Sailing the World. We share all the costs we had in the first full month of living on our boat. From Moving our Stuff, to Food and Drink, Boat Upgrades, everything! If that's not enough, we also post detailed articles of our monthly expenses on our Patreon page. You can find it here: Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/dutchsailingfamily Enjoy episode 31 of the Dutch Sailing Family! Join our voyage sailing across the Pacific Ocean with LIVE tracking and REAL TIME updates! https://patreon.com/harborsunknown Preparing Our PERFORMANCE CATAMARAN TO SAIL ACROSS the PACIFIC OCEAN | Harbors Unknown Ep. 95 We are gearing up to transit the Panama Canal and sail about 4,000nm across the Pacific Ocean to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. It’s probably the longest passage one can make and when you’re in the middle of the Pacific the closest people are those on the international space station. So we need to make sure our boat is as seaworthy as possible. This is part one of our Pacific Passage Prep videos so you can see exactly how we’re preparing our Seawind 1600 performance catamaran for the sailing adventure of a lifetime. Thanks so much for joining us this week! If you enjoy the video give it a thumbs up, leave us a comment down below and be sure to subscribe to our channel. #sailingaroundtheworld #sailingadventure #boatlife If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Exploring the world, connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how great food can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. Seeking to balance the desire to explore and travel to beautiful, remote locations while leaving no footprint, minimizing the Hawthorne effect of the observers who change the environment she or he observes. We hope to inspire people and showcase the possibility of living an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment, all while keeping it real. Sharing the trials and tribulations of living off-grid, acknowledging the discomfort of detoxing from the modern world, finding pleasure in the subtleties of nature and joy in simplicity. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration, for purpose. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world, exploring the beautiful waters of South Florida, the Florida Keys, Bahamas, the US East Coast, and Panama. The Spring Gozo Regatta fleet heading north towards Mgarr, Gozo was a wonderful sight as eighteen boats were on the starting line in Marsamxett. The fleet had a downwind with a south westerly wind blowing 14 to 18 knots. Leading the fleet outside Marsamxett was Andrew Agius Delicata’s Vivace, but was closely followed by Jonathan Gambin’s TonTon Laferla. Crossing the line first was Luis Azzopardi and Sara Baldwin’s Corona, followed by TonTon Laferla and Vivace. With ratings coming into play, the first three boats were Vivace (Andrew Agius Delicata / Matthew Gabriele) Ton Ton Laferla (Jonathan Gambin) Pep (Mark Camilleri) Race Management duties were undertaken by Martin Azzopardi, Michelle Caruana and Piero Picone at the start in Marsamxett, whilst Adrian Gauci Borda took care of finish line duties in Mgarr.

Please Subscribe, Share, Like and check the Bell. Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days. After the huge capsize of of the Ineos T6 boat where it completely turned turtle and all their systems were compromised the boat is out of the shed in Palma after mods and repairs and Team Captain, Sir Ben Ainslie has declared that they are ready again for more testing. This is your weekly serving of the best Sailing video released in the last seven days. The World on Water, March 31, 2023. At around 9am UTC on 26th March Rosalin Kuiper suffered a head injury after she fell from her bunk when the boat turned and slammed unexpectedly in heavy sea conditions. Rosalin was off watch and sleeping when the boat wiped out due to a large wave off the South American coast near to Cape Horn. When this happened Rosalin was thrown from her bunk and hit her head just above her right eyebrow. Blair Tuke, the Flight Controller par excellence and with vast experience across the foiling classes was pleased with how the second day of commissioning panned out saying: “Yeah good day I think we must have had a couple of hours on the water, got through a couple of different jibs and all in all, good day, big steps forward in just two days for us, so real good.” In 40 knots and 10 meter waves Biotherm screamed down a wave and gybed and the traveller car exploded sending its bearings into the Southern Ocean. At the same time the top battern in their mainsail broke and this was noticed when they got back onto the original course and things settled down. Paul and Sam explain. Sebastian Bohm and his Smuggler crew fired up on Day 1 of Act 1 in the 2023 Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup series, first, third and second places giving the local crew a narrow one point lead over reigning champion, Matador. Hosted by the Crising Yacht Club of Australia, Day 1 consisted of three windward/leeward races, with David Doherty’s Matador claiming the opening race and the final race, a fifth in between blemishing their scorecard. With the race wins accounted for under the predominant TPR scoring system, Craig Neil’s Quest is in third place following a pair of seconds and a fourth place. Quest is just two points off the lead. Hannah Snellgrove is a multiple ILCA 6 National Champion and medalled at the Princess Sofia, 2022 edition. She is interviewed by Olympic Sailing Coach jon Emmett who himself is an Iluca Masters Champion. The GWA Wingfoil World Tour is excited to hit Cape Verde for the first World Cup of the pure Wave discipline. We want to unite the best wingfoil wave athletes at one of the most renowned and best wave locations in the world to showcase the highest level of wingfoil wave performance in this surfing-only event.
