After settling in to our anchorage we go in search of the Jaco and the Sisserou, two endemic wild parrot species that you can't see anywhere else in the world! Welcome to Episode 3! This week we do a LOT of sailing (well, motor-sailing). We leave Falmouth Harbour in Antigua to head up to Jolly Harbour. En route we spot a simmering volcano on Montserrat and our SUP explodes! (More on this in an upcoming episode). We then head to Nevis for one night before taking advantage of a rare southerly wind to make the passage north to St Barts. Several days are spent at anchor outside Gustavia, the capital of St Barts. The water is crystal clear and the town is wonderful- a sophisticated blend of France and the Caribbean- but once the wind swings around to the south-east, the anchorage becomes very rolly and uncomfortable and it is once again time to move on. Eighteen boats are enrolled, ready to sail in and around the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago. The 2022 Rolex Giraglia race will return to its original format consisting of the San-remo-Saint-Tropay leg, three days of coastal races, and windward-leeward in French waters, followed by the start of the long race, scheduled for Wednesday 15 June: a 241-nautical mile course starting from Saint-Tropez, rounding the Giraglia rock and finishing in Genoa. The second day of racing at the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, an event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of title sponsor Giorgio Armani, was graced with an east-northeasterly breeze of 10 to 14 knots. Carkeek designed the full carbon cruiser racer NEO 570 C, was launched recently in Bari. It was constructed by Paolo Semeraro of Neo Yachts & Composites, and rig was from from Hall Spars. WE continue sailing around the archipelago, finding the most idyllic parts of the San Blas Island chain, discovering unbelievable island anchorages, surrounded by incredible sea life, crystal clear waters, and stunning white sandy beaches lines with palm trees. This paradise island chain is exactly what we wanted to find when we started sailing and exploring the Caribbean. The trash issues of the earlier islands seemed less of an issue at these more remote islands, and they definitely seemed more cared for by those who did inhabit them, which are far less that most. We spend most of our days exploring our beautiful new surroundings and discover a huge collection of starfish in the pristine water that surround us in every direction. In this vlog we take you on a typical day for us at anchor. Pretty much every day we get some projects done, film, do some editing, and run errands. Our boat is 100% powered by the sun so we're not dependent on going to shore for anything but food and drinking water at this point. In the works are plans for a watermaker so that we can make our own drinking water aboard while we cruise, so we won't even need to go to shore for that. A trip to Poulsbo made us feel like home and we got to experience going through the Ballard locks on lake Union. Then it was time to fly to our home away from Ran, Sweden, and meet our families and friends after 1,5 years! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. Martin is well known in the business of competitive sailing and for many years has covered the Americas Cup for television. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
