Only 3 days after finishing up our rigging we decided to give it a good test… a 360 mile test sail in fact in St Martin. We were both very excited to undertake e a multi day passage and chose a longer passage mainly for this reason. Our other deciding factor during these uncertain times was finding a place that accepted visitors with minimal PCR tests required. St Martin ticked these box. After checking out of Grenada, we got the boat ready to leave for a multi day passage. We were a little rusty while hosting all sails, we got them set and settled in to enjoy the ride. Within our first 24 hours we saw a range of wind and sea states and our first night was a bit of an induction of fire. Our first 24 hours saw us sailing over 140 miles and as the sun set the afternoon of the second day, we neared Domenica, in the middle of the island chain. After years of waiting, delays, setbacks, and one very long journey to get here, my new yacht is finally mine! I signed the paperwork the day before, and now it is time to take her out for our first real sail and shakedown cruise. I was definitely a little nervous pulling out of the slip and leaving the marina, but once we raised the sails, the nerves faded and the dream finally started to feel real. We sailed over to Koh Larn, popped a bottle of champagne, poured a little out for Neptune, and dropped anchor in a busy bay full of tour boats and jet skis. By evening, things calmed down, so we lowered the new Highfield dinghy, took the dogs ashore for a beach walk, Olivia went for a swim, and we had dinner on the beach… until a rainstorm forced us to take shelter. Our Niagara 35 proved she was up for the task though, practically sailing herself across the Gulf. Follow along and learn how to repair common types of damage to the gel coat layer on the hull of your dinghy. Gel coat is a thin protective layer that is applied on top of the fiberglass core of the hull. You can think of it this way: if the hull is the chocolate inside of an M&M, gel coat is the candy-colored shell. Keeping the gel coat layer intact is very important to the long-term health of any sailboat. If water is allowed to creep into the fiberglass core, it can soften the material and rapidly reduce the structural integrity of the boat. We, of course, understand that all sorts of things can happen to a dinghy throughout a typical day of sailing. Dropping the transom onto the pavement is pretty much guaranteed to happen. It’s OK! It just means that learning how to repair gel coat can prove to be an essential skill and key to maximizing the lifespan of your boat. It’s been a challenging day onboard Malizia-Seaexplorer! After discovering significant damage to the port foil, Boris Herrmann worked tirelessly to find and execute a solution. Using a grinder, he cut away damaged sections of the foil skin and was able to retract the foil 80%, securing it with lines to limit movement. Though not perfect, Boris remains optimistic: “So far, so good. I think we’ll make it to the finish without major difficulties.” With speeds now capped at 12–13 knots, Boris is focused on navigating the remaining miles safely. One of the most noticeable islands the Azores have, for housing Portugal's highest point, is also the one that gets nearly the fewest visitors by sailboat. Without many good harbors, we find another way to get to neighboring Pico. Hopping the ferry for the four mile trip across from Horta, we set ourselves up with a rental car for 24 hours and meet up with our friends Bill and Grace to see how much of this island we can see within a 24 hour period. Our sail down the US West coast continues and in this episode it's time for us to go around the infamous Point Conception. We spend a couple of days cruising the channel islands, San Miguel and Santa Cruz looking at caves and sea elephants. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. Every sailors worst nightmare. Being off the boat and your home starts sinking. It makes me sick to my stomach just to think about. We did our very best to help our neighbor out, and keep his boat afloat while he was away. The damage in the end was substantial but salvageable. We've got a new crew CATERINA from California!!!! Despite its incredibly large size, Avocet’s fridge had some issues causing our produce to go bad quicker than it should and put an unnecessary strain on our batteries by keeping our compressor running nearly 24/7. After we began demolition and made a shocking discovery we made it our mission to build the best boat fridge, ever. Although our project plan was simple in theory, it turned out to be one of the most challenging from sourcing materials to construction itself, but luckily we were graced with the presence of Chris’s brother Jon from S/V Prism who helped us get the job done, just in time for a trip to Santa Cruz Island. As we approached Bermuda, the forecast was undecided whether we were going have a complete calm or a storm front come through. As it turns out, it was the later. Knowing how the forecast was scheduled to build, we decide it was worth pushing hard to get to St George's and safely at anchor before the worst of the weather struck. Based on reports from boats that arrived after us, we most certainly made the right choice… So we made it to Bermuda! Then it was time to tally up the butchers bill and do a run down of everything that had broken or failed on the way… I think it would have been quicker to say what WASN’T leaking when we arrived!
