I did a ton of research to find the most reliable but simplest autopilot that I could for our hydraulic steering system on our 1973 trawler. Raymarine and Garmin were nice but too much money for features we did not need. We wanted something that we could simply set a compass heading and the pilot would keep the boat on that heading. Two brands looked good. Comnav and Si-Tex. We went with Si-Tex SP-70 and could not be happier. This pilot steers the boat straighter than we can by hand especially in swell. It was a tough start to the season with a 500NM passage across the Adriatic, around the foot of Italy, past Sicily and on to Malta. We had every kind of weather and an engine that wouldn't start in the middle of the Adriatic leaving us floundering in a patch of no wind, and a forecast of 50 knots the next day! All in all, though, we really enjoyed the trip. We put in one stop at Otranto in Italy, to anchor while a storm blew through. We will never forget sailing into Grand Harbour Valletta at dawn. We round out the second half of our trip, and complete our 977 miles from Eleuthera Bahamas to St. Barths. Day 5 still brings somewhat unpleasant conditions, leaving both of us still not feeling our best, but starting to get over it a touch. While the waves continue to drench the cockpit, we continue to hunker out below deck. Day 6 brings the sun and some calmer conditions, and we can start moving about the boat more and even get outside to enjoy the sun. Our hopes are temporarily brought up that we might make it into harbor the next night, but a quick check of our math shows us we still have two more nights at sea. By day 7 the winds have shifted just off our nose, died down to under 10 knots, and force us to put on the engine. Matt explains why we've chosen to go to St. Barth's over Sint Maarten, and even starts to clean himself up for the arrival. Morning 8 puts us in sight of many beautiful Caribbean islands, and the entrance of Gustavia Harbor in St. Barths. Elements has finally entered her first port in the Caribbean. We try to check out of the country with Customs, but they won't let us go! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, the time has finally come to prepare Nandji to sail and depart Port Vila, Vanuatu. We get the motor inspected one last time before deciding we are ready to travel. Loading up with supplies and filling the tanks, we have a rougher sail then expected and sail 150nm to Malakula island and spend the night anchored at our own private beach. Next day we tracks to Santo island where we try to check out of the country. This turns out to be a near impossible task as Customs officers all have different ideas about rules and length of lunch breaks! We are a young couple who with no sailing experience, who then bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off, sailing around the Pacific!
