Matt and I each tackle a fairing job in our catamaran, but in very different ways. For the 'Him' portion, Matt picks up a project we started back in the fall, of working on our water tanks. We've built them ourselves because they'll be stronger and lighter than plastic, but we need to go through steps of preparing them to hold water, which means using Total Boat's epoxy fairing compound. This fairing compound will stick better, which is very important when it is the container for our potable water. Down below deck, I'm 'beginning finishes' by using Total Boat's polyester fairing compound. There's been a few test rounds in our forward bunk, but in this video I'll be focusing in on our master vanity, and what it takes to blend down the edges of the fiberglass and start getting the first rounds of fairing compound on. This week we get out of the tent and onto the water, as we help the guys from Kentmorr to bring in a boat for demolition.  It's anchored up the Severn River, across the Chesapeake Bay, so the 4 of us load up onto Tucker's trawler to grab it. As we hear more about it from Alex along the way, Matt and I begin to wonder, 'If this boat is in decent enough shape...maybe we can take it!!'.  It's not an uncommon thing around this marina, for boats scheduled for demolition, to be snatched up by another person as a project boat.  In fact, Tucker's trawler we're on was the same case! After attaching a bridle to the sailboat and towing it back over to Kentmorr, Matt and I are able to get onboard and give this old Hunter sailboat a good look around to see if it could be a potential home.  Getting inside though, we notice it would need A LOT of work!! SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. Paradox II is an exceptional example of one of the best kept secrets of the trawler world. Most people have heard of Diesel Ducks, designed by George Buehler and built by Seahorse Marine in mainland China. What many do not know is that Seahorse Marine also builds a rugged, full displacement long range cruiser with a sailboat hull form, the Seahorse 52. Hull number 21 of the Seahorse 52 design, Paradox II did her initial cruising on the US west coast and was purchased by sailors ready to convert to power. She is a twin-engine edition that came through the Panama Canal, then cruised across the Caribbean to Florida. There she was sold to a couple who took a great boat and made it even better. Airconditioning, watermaker, plus a new dinghy and crane were fitted. They cruised the eastern seaboard for two years and after spending time and money returned to sail. Paradox II is an ideal couple’s cruiser, featuring an owner cabin aft (amidships) with guest cabin forward. Both cabins have built in desks. There is a hallway head for guests and the owner stateroom has an ensuite head and shower (with a tub!). The raised pilothouse has a helm chair forward with a settee behind. The entry level is a traditional saloon merging into a galley. The engine room is beneath the saloon and divided into two chambers – generator aft and engines forward. On deck, you can walk all around secured by tall stainless railing. There is a swim platform for arriving by dinghy that leads into the cockpit. The foredeck is uncluttered, just deck hatches and the windlass station forward. Working past the pilothouse to port you walk up a few steps to the boat deck which has an inflatable console dinghy and crane. Up a couple more steps takes you to the flybridge – the best place to operate when the weather cooperates and a marvelous place to relax and enjoy the view when you are stationary. Paradox II’s profile is pleasing with her sailboat – through the water friendly - hull topped with a raised pilothouse trawler deck. She is in tip top condition and the care and attention to detail given by her owners is proven everywhere you look. This is a power yacht you really need to step aboard to appreciate. While helping my neighbor Denis scale his mast I find out that he was one of the boats which had been attacked--or toyed with--by a pod of orca whales located on the northwest corner of Spain. Several yachts had encountered these whales and sustained extensive rudder damage, some had to call for a tow into safe harbor. Denis however worked out a method for dealing with these whales, and sustained no damage. On Monday, Sept. 28, I weigh anchor and set off for the Canary Islands, some 800 miles away. The Graveyard of the Pacific has claimed thousands of lives over the years. In 1906, the SS Valencia, sailing with the Pacific Coast Steamship Company, ran aground off the coast of Vancouver Island. She couldn’t have found a worse area to wreck. The violent waves and rocky cliffs that line the coastline made it nearly impossible for her passengers and crew to make it to the shore only a few meters away. The failed attempts to rescue those who clung to the wreck for 40 hours still haunt the area to this day. This video is a remake with updated voice over and some updated video and images.
