Chris Beeson puts the Rustler 42 through her paces and provides a comprehensive walk-through tour. Designed in 1996/97 by Stephen Jones as a larger alternative to the Rustler 36, the Rustler 42 was launched in 1999. Even today, this British-built yacht features qualities rarely found on production yachts. She boasts a fully bespoke, handcrafted interior. A long fin keel moulded as part of the hull, creating an encapsulated keel with the ballast inside the yacht. This design requires no bolts or fastenings. A full-length skeg protects the rudder. The engine isn't located in the aft cabin, so occupants aren't disturbed by noise or vibration; instead, it's positioned above the keel, where tankage is also situated, helping to keep heavy items low and central for better stability. It has a cutter rig, offering smaller, more manageable sails that can be gradually reduced in area. With the hurricane season upon us it was time for us to say good bye to Martinique and sail south for the safety of Trinidad & Tobago. ► Although the TH33 was unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival back in September, sea trials weren’t available to be undertaken until this spring in Jupiter, Florida, and then in Cannes, which is where we headed to check out how Jeanneau’s smallest powercat performed at sea. ► Here’s our quick take on it before we share the full test report with you: powered by a pair of 300-HP Mercury V8s, the small catamaran is capable of exceeding 30 knots and it handles choppy seas very well. Tight turns are accompanied by a slight heel that may surprise those accustomed to monohull craft. Today was a simple day. I cooked, I sailed, and I watched dolphins. I decided to try making pain au chocolat in my Omnia oven, and I may have just discovered a game changer for the Golden Globe Race. They definitely don’t look bakery-perfect, and there’s room for improvement, but they were absolutely delicious. Honestly, being able to bake fresh pastries in the middle of the ocean feels a little ridiculous. And then came the dolphins. So many dolphins. Jumping, surfing the bow wave, swimming alongside the boat as if they had somewhere important to be. One of those moments that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you stop whatever you’re doing. It wasn’t an exciting day. It wasn’t a challenging day. It was just a really good day. And right now, that’s exactly what I wanted. France is getting closer, the final stretch is here, and soon it will be time to focus on the starting line. Hopping fairly swiftly between islands in an effort to avoid the full force of the Summer Meltemi winds. Little did we know we were soon to be gifted with a slightly different meteorological phenomenon - a WATERSPOUT. Thankfully for us, we were not in its path, so it only left us with a slightly increased heart rate and some twisted material for our memoirs. Special Episode: I have moved up the date of my departure onboard SV Wahine for my solo voyage across the North Pacific from Japan to Canada to late spring 2021! Why? Times and circumstances have changed. Given so many changing realities, I have decided to revise my schedule to cross the North Pacific. It is now my intention to depart Tokyo Bay in the late Spring of 2021. In doing so, I will catch the Kuroshio current up the coast of Japan. Then, somewhere off Miyage or Ibaraki, I will turn away from land and sail between latitudes 35-40 to what I call “Nemo North,” which lies at : 37° 58’45.13 “N / 148° 1’12.17 “W This will allow me to catch as much of the prevailing winds as possible before turning north at around 149N, avoiding the Pacific High (the doldrums), and head to Vancouver. This route will take me through the two gyres that form the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which I want to witness first-hand, sharing what I find. Pacific Solo is a voyage of discovery exploring the garbage patch and finding “Nemo North.” It is also a deeply personal quest that I am doing for my grandson and my mother. Every epic journey needs a vision, an image that captivates and compels. One of those images for me in terms of Pacific Solo is of my mother greeting me when I arrive in English Bay, Vancouver. I want to, must do this while she still remembers my name. We finally made it to our first sail of the year in our electric sailboat, which just happens to be Labor Day weekend. But in Ixion fashion, we still have work to do. Join us on our new expedition! After what felt like an eternity, we finally are able to head out for a short period for a little shake down sail. It isn't a journey just yet, but it was still nice to see what we have been working for for the last six or so months. It definitely felt like the beginning of our new journey. We still have to do a proper shake down to test the limits and power consumption of the electric motor. But first, we have to shake the cobwebs out and sail Ixion.
