This Sailboat project began in mid-2012 and continues today, with all work being carried out over weekends or vacation leave. I have the engine placed on the bed now and am in the process of trimming the prop shaft to length. Once happy with all clearances I will weld the prop tube into position then begin the process of installing the shaft aft bearing and strut assembly. Lot's to do!

In this video a look at assembling the engine deb plates including the top bearer plate. So as not to bore you guys too much (welding is welding) a used a fair bit of timelapse. I will do one more video to show the final look of the structure, then will move on to getting the engine in for a trial fit-up!

Hi guys, just a brief look at the final part of aligning the rudder post. All worked out well! Sorry this one is a little out of sequence, been trying to get on with the build at the same time as edit Videos!!!!

In this video, I begin the fabrication and installation of the engine bed. Engine bed alignment has to be very accurate to ensure ease of and correct alignment of the prop shaft and transmission flanges. One of the highlights to look out for might be my brief "Accidental Disco Dancing". Rust prevention & treatment after removing mill scale. Tips for corrosion management when fabricating or repairing steel.

Once I was able to pull the rudder post into position and brace it, I needed to remove the bottom bearing, see how it goes!

After attempting to align the rudder tube correctly, I needed to remove the nylon bearings/bushings so as to be able to weld the post in place without destroying the bearings. This proved to more than I bargained for as the bottom bearing appears to be seized in the tube! Preparing and tooling-up to get the bearing out!

I thought I would do a short video on a little of my background history and where the Steel Away dream started. Building steel yachts in the tropics has its own unique set of problems, the primary one being continuous corrosion due to high levels of humidity and wet season rains. In this short video, I discuss chemical rust treatment and the product I use to stay on top of corrosion whilst building.

In this Video I give a brief overview of getting some shade over the boat to keep the heat down. Also a look at the new Volvo Penta engine.

I went ahead and added some vertical shade cloth to the framework to give a little more protection on the Eastern facing side of the hull. Then moved on to start correction of the rudder post alignment.

One of my favourite hobbies is making artistic ironwork pieces such as candle holders, spice racks, pot hangers etc. by hand. It's quite therapeutic and you get something nice at the end of it! I thought I would share some of my work with you all, hope you enjoy it!.
