We wait at Great Exuma for Hurricane Erin to pass, lazily exploring the unusually deserted Sand Dollar beach with lush trees overhanging the ocean. Then we tuck into the Litterbox for a Westerly blow, where anchoring in the shallow waters becomes a bit of a challenge. In this episode, Debbie and I have an epic sail to Hen Rock, Catalina Island. Debbie has been prone to seasickness in the past, so we put her Relief Band to the test. Winds start to build and we practice reducing canvas for a smooth ride. We opt to pick up a mooring due to the small craft advisory and forecast wind change overnight that would have us anchoring against a lee shore. We fumble around and the captain shouts a few profanities while we attempt to pickup our mooring in a tailwind. We get an assist from Ohana for a successful mooring pickup then have a nice, brief hike on the island. We spot a Catalina Island Fox, Bald Eagle, and Bison! Winds are lighter for the return. Giovanni Soldini e il suo equipaggio - in viaggio a bordo di Maserati Multi 70 verso Malta per partecipare alla Rolex Middle Sea Race - hanno incontrato stamattina tra Stromboli e Messina i volontari di Sea Shepherd, l’organizzazione internazionale senza fini di lucro la cui missione è quella di fermare la distruzione dell’habitat naturale e il massacro delle specie selvatiche negli oceani per conservare e proteggere l’ecosistema e le differenti specie. I volontari di Sea Shepherd Italia sono impegnati nelle acque intorno alle Isole Eolie nell’Operazione SISO, che ha l’obiettivo di combattere le attività di pesca illegale e liberare il Mediterraneo da più plastica possibile. In particolare l’organizzazione sta recuperando reti spadare e FAD (Fishing Aggregative Devices) illegali: metodi di pesca formati da un filo di propilene che tiene a galla delle larghe foglie, sotto alle quali si raduna una gran quantità di pesci che viene pescata indiscriminatamente. I FAD provocano danni gravissimi all’ecosistema marino, catturando e uccidendo anche tartarughe, delfini, capodogli, balenottere e squali. Giovanni Soldini commenta:«I volontari di Sea Shepherd stanno facendo un lavoro pazzesco nei nostri mari per cercare di difenderli dall'assurda noncuranza di chi vuole solo depredarne le risorse a qualsiasi costo. Ci sono chilometri di cavi in plastica che vengono abbandonati in mare: è ora di capire che il mare va rispettato, non è una risorsa infinita ed è fondamentale per la sopravvivenza dell’uomo su questo pianeta. È sempre bello vedere che si può fare qualcosa e che c’è qualcuno che non smette mai di lottare per fare inversione di marcia, come i volontari di Sea Shepherd». Andrea Morello, presidente di Sea Shepherd Italia, racconta: «Alle prime luci dell’alba solitamente cerchiamo all’orizzonte plastica e ne troviamo sempre molta nella forma di FAD illegali. This is Episode 51 of our adventure. Our third week in France. We spend an extra day in Port Blanc before heading Roscoff arriving just in time before the weather turns.
