Is it RELIEF or JOY that we feel as the rugged remote island of Flores appears on the horizon? Landfall after an Ocean Passage is always an exciting time. Sailing into a new port never gets old. This isolated island has been called the Marquesas of the Atlantic Ocean and we can't wait to explore. We’re back in the US of A! After arriving in New Smyrna Beach, we make our way north on the ICW to St. Augustine, then hop on bicycles to explore the nation’s oldest city. It’s storm season in Florida, where small but fierce thunderstorms are whipped up almost every afternoon. When the dark clouds roll in and the lightning cracks above our 52’ metal mast, it’s hard to not feel like a sitting duck. What to do? Take the edge off, of course, with a cocktail. Dark N’ Stormies, anyone? *** This is Part 1 of 2! Be sure to watch Part 2 here: https://youtu.be/VWFfiV_rLVs *** Hope you enjoy! Part 93 of a series: Sailing Tampa Bay to Key West. Antifouling bottom paint is not easy or inexpensive but needs to be done before we continue the sailing journey south from Punta Gorda, Florida. The planking work is moving right along, but unfortunately Jack and Wes have to head home. We discuss the work that we got done as a team, then focus on the mizzen mast, which is also nearing completion. Alix has been working on spot repairs with graving pieces, as well as shaping the base of the mast, which passes belowdecks. Since it will also pass in front of the engine, an area with a few parts that require regular maintenance, the common practice of tapering serves two purposes: it will be easier to step and it will give us a bit of extra room where we need it. Although you can taper the mast any which way you like, we'd like it to be visually appealing as it will be prominent in the interior. And, since the mast is secured at both the partner and at the mast step, the base of the mast belowdecks acts mostly as a compression post, and does not need the same amount of material as it does up abovedecks. Thank you very much for your support, and as we mentioned in the video, we did restructure our Patreon page, and we welcome you to have a look. We are now offering access to monthly Question and Answer sessions we're calling "Live from the Boat Shed", and we have an archive of previous ones. To date, that's 6 hours of extra content. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Episode # 196 : A Change of Course Hello Friends, Here is the story of my ill fated attempt at solo sailing our 30ft sailboat Triteia to the Hawaiian Islands. We had pushed hard to finally live land life behind and were 2 months behind our planned departure date due to parts shortages and unexpected complications with getting our new mast installed. Our original cruising plans were for James to sail solo to Hawaii then continue on to Alaska where Camille and Mister Steady would come on board. All of the delays and the advancing summer season gave us a very tight time window on making this dream come true. This resulted in not enough time to throughly sea trail the windvane.... After days of beating into 20-30 knot winds, my self steering Windvane began to work its self loose from the boat. The threads in the housing of the windvane itself failed which presented the possibility of losing the vane into the sea or WORSE possibly damage the transom of the boat due to the massive loads placed on this gear at sea. Impossible to fix underway I made the hard call and came about and abandoned my attempt for Hawaii. Could I have lashed the windvane and continued on? Possibly yes but my concern was once I made it to Hawaii would I get stuck in Hawaii if the vane was not able to be repaired? I also had to consider there is no quick exit from Hawaii. It is 3 weeks or a month sail from Hawaii to anywhere on the West Coast of the North America. I had not 1 but 2 electronic "Tiller Pilots" as a back up and for coastal cruising in light winds but these units are, strangely enough, Not waterproof and tend to burn out very easily. So I wasn't without redundancies but anyone who goes ocean sailing knows that a windvane is the most critical gear on the boat especially so for a solo sailor. So as with all things sailing, one must be flexible and willing to change course when necessary. If you enjoy our channel please "Like" the videos and Subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes. An Affordable Sailing Catamaran! The start of a new adventure! Duke and Virginia have found an affordable sailing catamaran, an old but excellent condition 1984 Performance Cruising Gemini 3000 sailboat. Not only is the value great, but this has a very narrow beam (for a catamaran) so it will be easier to find available boat slips, and a very shallow draft with the centerboards up which will allow for sailing in shoal waters and easy beaching! We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 20 In this episode we are using oil and fire on our boat!! But don't worry, it's to help her, not to harm her! We are finally installing the first planks, and as they are the garboards and they need to bend and twist a lot, some extra work and care are needed... and that's why we needed fire! ༄ We are Ben and MP! Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Get 70% OFF of your next Huusk knife! https://huusk.club/laurenlanders It is the second and last of these charters. The places we visited are by far some of my favorite in the Bahamas and I loved being able to share them. After years and years of longing to see a tiger shark in the water, I finally got a good interaction with one and it made my entire day. The stingrays never get old and I love seeing perceptions change while we swim with 20 Caribbean Reef Sharks. Very lively sailing from Antigua to Montserrat in the Leeward Islands. Explored the devastation of Plymouth by volcanic eruption in 1997. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) departs Antigua, the island of beaches, and sail to Montserrat, the island of active volcanos. This sailing trip was an exciting broad reach in big Atlantic swell. As usual in this season, it was perfect sailing weather between the islands. Rather than a direct route to the anchorage, we intentionally circumnavigate Montserrat, passing to the south of the island rounding the Soufriere Volcano that erupted from 1995 to 1997. It destroyed the main town of Plymouth on the west and the airport in the east, leading to total evacuation of the southern half of the island, which remains so to this day. Close hauled up the lee side (west) of the island we had a clear view of the pyroclastic flows and huge boulders over what was Plymouth, down slope from the crater which is still gently smoking H2S gases causing strong acid rain downwind. We anchored in the rather rolly Little Bay, the main and only harbour, and explored the island with the usual rent-a-wreck car. We accidentally managed to get into the exclusion zone of Plymouth to see the eerie scene of destruction, before being shoo’d off by security! In contrast to the volcano, the rest of the island was very lush green and the people extremely civilized and polite. Is that what happens after 25 years with no tourists we wonder? After 2 relatively sleepless nights being disturbed by a combination of rolling and cargo ships wanting us to move, we depart for smoother waters of Nevis…. Hopefully! Montserrat is clearly an under-visited island. 27-30 Dec 2018

Well, it's finally that time! Our trip to Costa Rica has come. We've been planning on this for a long time. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out for both of us to go. So Steve stayed back to get us ready for our planking party and I travelled down with Jack, Kit, Anne and Andrew to then meet up with Med for the basic blacksmithing course we planned to put on. We've put a lot of energy into making this happen and it felt really good to finally be putting that plan into motion. We also could not have pulled this off without the help of everyone involved. Not only did Jack and Med pull off a great class, but we had so much help from everyone to get ready. I can't name everyone here but thank you to everyone at the shipyard, especially Dylan and Mariel for the planning, charcoal making and translation! On top of the course there was so much going on at the shipyard. We watched a frame go up right after we arrived, which was really impressive to see everyone working together to make such big pieces go into places with what seemed so little effort. In this video we give you a little taste of the work down there but there is still more to come. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in finding more information about the SAILCARGO project, the build of Ceiba and or about becoming an investor or shareholder, you can find that here: https://www.sailcargo.org/ And if you would like more information the non-profit association, AstilleroVerde, their Costa Rican shipyard association which focuses on providing interactive workshops and hands-on apprenticeship opportunities to the local and international community, you can find that here: https://www.astilleroverde.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. The Miserable Mile is a stretch of super busy waterway near Ft Myers with an incredibly narrow channel. Powerboats fly this way and that, wakes churn the water, and straying from the channel even a few feet means running hard aground. In short, it’s quite aptly named! We have a grand time sailing regardless, with the sun out and lovely wind. After pulling into a slip in Ft Myers Beach, we start fixing up our engine, Mr. Beke, who’s in need of some maintenance and repairs. Getting prepped for our next overnight sail — to Key West! We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.
