Everything in wooden boatbuilding starts here: milling, milling, milling. First, we do more with steam bending wood, specifically the locust which is the outermost of the boat decking material and is of locust to be protective in a place that will meet a lot of docks. Some people have questioned our use of pine for marine decking, however, pine is traditional in this application, rot resistant when properly finished (we plan to use many coats of oil), easy to find for repairs, and, since we have a lot of it, we can select clear stock for this application. We'll begin installing the boat decking very soon. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. This is a truly great idea in a pilothouse concept. The Nautilus 36 combines the underbody of a C&C 37 for swift passages, a functional cockpit and a great interior for "wet gear less" offshore cruising. It's easy to see over the pilothouse for average height sailors for day sailing plus accommodating six of your friends in comfort. Inside the Nautilus features two swivel seats to navigate & pilot from, plus two quarter berths in main cabin. Two steps down to port she has a convertible dinette and an efficient galley. Forward is a good sized head and a large V berth. Her engine is the larger Perkins 50hp and her sail inventory includes new mainsail and 120% jib plus two spinnakers in case one contemplates the occasional club or offshore race. This Nautilus 36 received an extensive refit starting in 2018 and has only been sailed occasionally since relaunch in 2021. New sails, electronics, interior cushions and redone wood work, deck paint, batteries, headsail furling, new windows and ports/hatches plus more. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below. Traced them down to the cockpit where some of our instruments are mounted. Took everything off and re-bedded the Garmin antenna, cable clam, and the mount for the chart plotter. The pulley systems for the davits had outlived their usefulness. Bought a bunch of New England Ropes red 3/8" Stay Set and 4 Ronstan tripple pulleys. This replaced the existing double pulleys for a better mechanical advantage. Did some cooking, dancing, and goofing around. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. This is it, the final leg, sailing home to an unbelievable welcome. As we sailed past the iconic needles and back into the Solent, 7 years and 50,000 ocean sailing miles after we left, it brought out a lot of emotions in us. Being joined by hundreds of our followers, friends and family both on the water and on our arrival dock was something that we could never have imagined and that we are still struggling to comprehend. Steve is building this boat to suit the sort of adventuring he sees himself doing with the friends he thinks might come along for it, and as he says in this week's video, building an extremely useful workbench to serve as storage and a berth is a physical commitment to the fact that he will never stop building or making. He also intends to be extremely self-sufficient in even the remotest of places, or to help fellow cruisers along the way. Wes is here for this undertaking, and constructing this detail of the interior takes advantage of his particular skills. He came to woodworking thanks to the inspiration and mentorship of his grandfather, and enjoys making furniture and other beautiful things for himself in his workshop at his home in Tennessee. This is a somewhat atypical "Price of Sailing" video. Instead of broad estimates, I'm pulling out the invoice and breaking down the boat's cost line by line. Even though I personally selected the options on the invoice, some of the final numbers even caught me by surprise! The Hallberg Rassy 44 is a beautifully crafted, well built yacht, thoughtfully equipped with premium fittings and accessories. It is an investment in quality. When I placed my order in February 2022, I recall being unfamiliar with many of the options I was choosing. My hope is that this video will help future buyers navigate the unknown terrain of a brand new boat purchase, offering insights and advice along the way. Author notes : I’m 54 years old, and I frequently see people having heart attacks younger than me. The question often comes up in my mind: What am I saving this money for? A few years ago, I made the decision to jump in, throw down a big deposit and see what happens. Buying a used boat on the Chesapeake wouldn’t have had the same effect as purchasing a brand-new boat from Sweden—one that somehow had to eventually make its way to the USA. This was a forced adventure on my part and Tom from a few years ago is still influencing me today. That decision has revealed parts of the world I never would have dreamed of seeing. The million dollars is gone, but I consider it fully reimbursed in joy and adventure.
