I set sail bound for Tahiti, hit some rough weather, and get excited about new adventures exploring histroy 'Seadog Style!' #sailingblog#sailingvideo#storm Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ If you’d like to help the Old Seadog Please checkout our Patreon page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Contributions to the project can be made at paypal.me/seadogadventures Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 140 In this episode of our boat restoration, we build our own gimbal for our electric stove and oven. Ben had it all planned out in his head and tested his freshly learned skills by mixing carpentry and welding (and a bit of intuition too) to make it work! Besides the gimbal project, Adilson works on making our bow locker a nice storage room, so we can farewell our container. 👉 SUBSCRIBE to not miss out on the new episodes: https://bit.ly/3dI3hBn YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR PROJECT: 👉 By becoming a patron - join to unlock exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/sailingyaba 👉 Through Paypal donations: https://bit.ly/3kR4Ezo or sailingyaba@gmail.com 👉 By wearing our products: https://shopsailingyaba.com/ 👉 GET OUR FAVORITE TOOLS: https://www.amazon.com/shop/sailingyaba We are forever grateful to everyone that is living our dream with us ♥️ 🇧🇷 Legendas em Português em todos os episódos! 🇪🇸 Subtítulos en español en todos los episodios! 💙 Who are we? We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. More about us: 👉 About us + Q&A https://youtu.be/TldDlohjwTs 👉 more info about the project http://www.sailingyaba.com 💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Adilson, Beto and Luiz. Last call for this very important fundraiser: https://www.bonfire.com/the-a2a-community-crest/ Only a couple of days left, and it's crucial to the coming year and the work we need to do to prepare for launch. Thank you for your support! The water tanks have been fetched from MS Fabrication in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where our talented metal worker, Evan, put together four water tanks for us. Three of them are storage, and one of them is a pickup tank into which will feed water from the various other tanks via ball valves. They'll be filled from a water maker which we'll be installing much later, but that will live in the head. The tanks total 94.9 gallons according to our friendly neighborhood naval architect and water tank spiritual advisor, Satchel Douglas. As Steve explains, the pickup tank that will live in the bilge is exactly 9 gallons, and beside the fact that it will allow us to isolate water tanks and balance the water use so as to balance the loaded weight in the boat, it has an added benefit as it can act as a way of measuring daily water usage. The water tanks are held in place with NRS straps, which shouldn't see too much movement (read: opportunity for chafe) as tie-downs inside the lockers. Steve deploys all kinds of other hardware and wooden supports to hold the tanks into place as well, and goes into a good level of detail on that. Thank you so much for watching and for your support. Don't forget to grab your A2A Community Crest gear before it's gone! https://www.bonfire.com/the-a2a-community-crest/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Iconic. The Hobie 16 revolutionized multihull sailing and defined its culture when she hit the California beach scene in 1969. Now, over forty years later, this Sailboat Hall of Fame inductee continually attracts great sailors and delivers serious adrenaline rushes worldwide. Why? Because the Hobie 16 is the perfect cat, powerful enough for world champions yet forgiving enough for novices. Its dual-trapeze rig helps you and your crew member tame the high-powered sailplan, and its asymmetrically shaped fiberglass hulls reduce weight and eliminate the need for daggerboards. Seriously fast, seriously fun -- fly a hull and the obsession begins!

Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit #sailing #boatlife

Even though the mast is back up and we’re officially a sailboat again(!), we’ve got a scary long list of boat projects to complete before we can leave the dock in Mobile, Alabama. In this video we bend the sails back on, replace the kitchen plumbing, and do a bit of varnishing, finish woodworking and more engine room insulation. We also make a modification to the bulkhead between our chain locker and forward v-berth locker to allow easier stowage of half of our anchor rode further aft. We’re trying to redistribute the weight because our boat is a little bow-heavy. Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. Buy a sailboat, then sail over the horizon, right? Oh if it was that simple! Often you zigzag, and sometimes you backtrack. In our last episode, we made it to the Florida Keys. But before pressing on any further, we had some big projects to take care of — including applying new antifouling paint to the bottom of our boat. The closest yard with a spot for us was 150 miles back in the direction we just came. Time to turn the ship around. Hope you enjoy! Beautiful is the future of those who dare to have an adventure. The story that's been told in this video is a story of courage. Just three months after Hurricane Irma Collin went to the so far destroyed Tortola with only a one way ticket looking for an opportunity. And there he found not only a boat but the brave Maria. It takes courage to buy a destroyed boat and trust in your capability to make it seaworthy. It also takes courage to leave mainland and jump into a sailboat to sail around the world. Watch the tell tales on a sail as the sailboat maneuvers in the wind. We then animate a boat so that you can see how the boat is presented to the wind and as the tell tales change behavior you can see the animated boat changing its direction. Another first for us was a very close encounter with a whale that crept up on us one early morning and appeared right alongside our hull. A scary moment for sure! In this first part of our crossing we experience some rough weather conditions with heavy squalls, acceleration zones and a bumpy sea state as we depart Guadeloupe and the Lesser Antilles. Make sure to buckle up and get the popcorn out for this one! To elaborate further on our little whale encounter we have put together an article with a break down of the chain of events that morning including photos, our general thoughts on whale collisions at sea and if there is anything that could have been done to prevent this. Today we made the decision that we are going to start drinking the ocean. And that means turning saltwater into freshwater with the help of a watermaker! This is going to be a multi day install and today marks day one. We want to be fully self sufficient some day, at least as much as you can be. A watermaker will enable us to take showers, wash dishes, drink and prepare food and even wash our clothes, eventually. Getting water while cruising is possible by hauling jugs and cans, but the more remote you get the more difficult it becomes. Our next big stop is the Bahamas and there are something like 700 uninhabited islands which means a lot of islands to ourselves and no access to water. Having a watermaker will increase the time we can stay "out there" Our friends Raff and Sascha are documenting their boat rebuild and will be posting the story on their channel @SpearItAnimal **************************************** If you came here looking for our Amazon links, you're a special kind of awesome human. The deck framing is almost complete on Arabella. In this episode, Steve wraps up all the framing in the aft section by making a couple more deck beams and then framing in the hatch. This hatch will provide some storage but also some ventilation to the engine compartment. Meanwhile, Alix diligently works on the sill plate for the house top. The sill plate needs to fit snugly to the carlins and deck beams which frame the house top opening. They will then be joined at the corners via half lap joints and screwed down to provide a base for the house to built up off of but also for the decking to butt up against. Where the decking abuts the sill plate will then provide an ample surface for caulking around the house. Soon the work is going to shift to mocking up the house and the cockpit so that we start to figure out what we want the interior to look like! Thank you all for watching and supporting. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. Catamarans have many advantages over monohulls when it comes to sitting at anchor or on a mooring. In particular, their shallower draft means that you can get closer to shore and often in less crowded areas. But there are also tips and tricks to carrying out the exercise aboard a boat that has more windage than a monohull and and rides to the anchor in a different way. Nigel Irens explains and demonstrates the techniques. ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Yachting World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/user/yachtingworld?sub_confirmation=1 ► For the latest reviews, new gear launches and tour news, visit our website here - http://www.yachtingworld.com ► Like us on Facebook here - https://www.facebook.com/yachtingworldmagazine ►Follow us on Twitter here - https://twitter.com/yachtingworld ►Feel free to comment below! ►Remember to hit that LIKE button if you enjoyed it :)

Sailing around the world on our sailboat "Brick House", sailing around Cape Aghullas and the Cape of Good Hope, of South Africa, was certainly the sailing passage that Rebecca had feared the most during our circumnavigation. Very bad weather conditions and unpredictable weather make sailing around the 2 Capes of South Africa, very intimidating for even experienced sailors. We sailed through every kind of weather from East London to Hout Bay, just short of Cape Town, but luckily using Predictwind Offshore on our Raymarine Axiom Pro and the Iridium GO, we MOSTLY knew when stormy weather at sea was approaching, from wind and squalls, to waves and currents. We sailed in the worst electrical lightning storm we have ever been in...and we had some very nice fair weather sailing too. Predictwind on the chartplotter with the Iridium GO really makes getting weather forecasts at sea so much easier now. Radar also helped with seeing bad weather and squalls approaching. Patrick didn’t mention it, but the CAPE forecast on PredictWind even warned of high squall activity for one night sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. Being able to get weather at sea every 12 hours, certainly is the reason we felt comfortable sailing this entire coast in one go, rather than making many stops To seek shelter from the wind and waves. Being able to get weather reports at sea with Predictwind Offshore on the Raymarine chartploter certainly made all the difference!!! Patrick gives a few sailing tips while Sailing the coast of Africa, in good weather, and in bad weather, upwind and downwind. This episode is like a "how to sail" video, but for experienced sailors who want to cross oceans, and round the great capes! Here is our Predictwind Affiliate Link for a free or paid version of Predictwind. https://www.predictwind.com/?ref=rebeccachildress Here is our chartplotter, which s our Amazon Affiliate link: https://amzn.to/2yGflBe And here is the best place to get an Iridium GO with an antenna good for a sailboat (Marine Package).
