#sailingblog #sailingvideo In this episode Im on passage to New Zealand. To wait for a good weather window I stop on route, I at one of the remote places of the World, Minerva Reef. A small atoll in the South Pacific and adventure for the Od Seadog. Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. Don't forget to click the bell next to the subscribe button to notify you of every new episode, that way you’ll never miss an adventure!! On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
For information about our May 7&8 Open House (our final one!) visit: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome Evan at MS Fabrication in Dorchester, Massachusetts finished an important stainless steel surround that serves as the home for the galley stove. That means that in this week's video, in goes the three-burner, propane, Dickinson Mediterranean marine cookstove. But first, some problem solving. After realizing that there would 1 1/4"-worth of extra space alongside the gimballed stove, Steve and KP brainstormed about how that seemingly small slot might make a smart storage solution as a magnetic knife block and for cookie sheet stowage. Then we discuss the Nanni marine diesel installation with a seasoned mechanic well versed in the art of setting up remote and easy-to-reach and easy-to-inspect filters, dipsticks, and expansion tanks. We're thankful for Fred from Hansen Marine—cheers for his time and talent! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Going to therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness. My paid partner BetterHelp makes therapy simple, with 10% off your first month to help you get started: https://betterhelp.com/delos Today's episode is a super fun one with a healthy dose of nostalgia as we revisit one of the places we loved so much our first time around. It's the first sailing destination that we've returned to together (I hadn't met Kazza yet when I sailed through French Polynesia and Tonga the first time) and it felt sooo crazy to be back in the same place as totally different people. This season has been a lot of fun but also pretty challenging, and after soooo much boat work, and sooooo many miles, it finally feels like we have the chance to settle in and enjoy some proper Fijian cruising. We visit a very cool village that very rarely has sailors visiting, and we had so much fun hanging and playing with all the kids. We also welcome our first new crew we've had in a suuuuper long time, and our first ever Frenchie! Mathilde will be joining us for the passage to Australia, so it was great to be able to spend some time together and for her to get used to the boat before we set off in next week's episode for our last long passage on Delos (I know we can't believe it either 🥹) Get behind the scenes with exclusive bonus content, early & ad free videos, meet up invites, and more! https://patreon.com/svdelos Interested in getting your own Delos Explorer 53? https://svdelos.com/delos2 You can find all the camera gear we use, our must have cruising essentials, tools, recommended reading, safety gear, and more at our amazon storefront! https://svdelos.com/amazon Watch our 4 part docu-series: https://80northseries.com Protect yourself from the sun! https://svdelos.com/rashguards Support Our Videos- Send Us Love http://svdelos.com/beer http://patreon.com/svdelos We're completing our sail around the world, so there's plenty more to see! Are you sailing to the Bahamas? New laws in progress in Florida may make it much harder to sail the east coast and on the the Caribbean! Anchoring in Flroida is a pivotal part of the boat life cruising experience on the east coast and these laws could chaneg the way we sail Flroida and the Florida Keys and Bahamas. Alles reparabel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The prediction wasn't that strong. But it came out really thick. 116 kn wind in the weather station in Isafjördur. That's over 200km/h. My berth was not my first choice. The days before, despite a lot of wind, it was the quietest place in the north. A torn cleat and a ruptured deck have to complain about. When we smelled diesel in our cabin, we knew we had a problem. We just hoped it would turn out to be an easy fix… but how often does THAT happen? Finding the source our fuel leak leads us into another big boat project, forcing us to postpone our launch date, and requiring — as all new boat projects do — a handful of four-letter words as we fumble our way through it. No need for pulleys, cables or bungie cords, this retractable, kick up rudder can be operated with one hand in one simple movement! As work progresses on the sailing tender, for Steve Denette's Arabella, Bob comes up with a simple kick up rudder. Using a re-salvaged tiller and recycled material you won't believe how well it works. In addition to the White Oak cheeks and the Mahogany blade boat builder Bob Emser cast some custom bronze Pintle and Gudgeons and other bronze fitting for the Dinghy Victoria. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Steve is the 5th generation of his family to live at Pinetum Farm, and many of his tools are lovely hand-me-downs, but some are workhorses he bought at the start of the project for as much bang as he could get for the buck. Unfortunately, the Delta thickness planer has been complaining loudly lately, and boards take longer and longer to mill. Enter the new thickness planer, which we race for time against the old Delta to get a rough calculation of how many hours we'll be saving for the rest of the milling that needs to get done. Spoiler alert: IT'S A LOT. *We need your help!* Do you or does someone you know have the ability to work with stainless steel? We need a fabricator in New England to help. Steve outlines many of the details of that work starting at 13:12. Spread the word, ask around, let us know through the contact section of our website: acorntoarabella.com. And finally, we get the navigation table and the quarter berth mocked up, meaning that we've rounded the corner of having the footprints of all the interior furniture decided. Our parting shots are of the glue-up for the navigation table, constructed of mahogany from Victoria. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? Ooo this has been a long time coming… We make it to SALTWATER! After leaving the freshwater of Lake Michigan and traveling 1300 miles down the rivers (Mississippi and all the rest!), we’ve made it to the Gulf of Mexico! Finally it’s time to turn our motorboat back into a SAILBOAT. Before leaving Chicago, we unstepped our mast and shipped it south via truck to Turner Marine in Mobile, Alabama. Our mast arrived way before we did, and was waiting for us at the boatyard. We were very happy to discover it it survived its own journey without as much as a scratch. Hope you enjoy, Lauren & Kirk P.S. For anyone who's is interested or cares about video editing software... We migrated from Adobe Premiere to Final Cut Pro on this episode. In short, that meant that this episode took a bit longer than exepected to produce since we were learning on the fly. There are also few things that are a little rougher than we'd hoped, but we're already feeling and seeing the benefits of the switch. FCP is optimized to run efficiently on our laptops, while Adobe products absolutely burn through the batteries. While using our solar panels and living 100% off-grid for the past month, we quickly realized we couldn't keep operating this way. Now that we've got the first episode down, FCP is already feeling much more familiar. We'll be able to edit more quickly and efficiently, because we've put an end to the unsustainable cycle of charging the computer for multiple hours to get an hour of editing in before having to start the charging cycle all over again. Whereas before we couldn't edit video on the computer and charge it at the same time, and it would only last for a maximum of 1.5 hours while editing, now that we've switched to FCP we can charge and edit at the same time, and it lasts about 3+ hours. Huge improvement! — YouTube: https://youtube.com/sailingsoulianis Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/sailingsoulianis Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingsoulianis/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingsoulianis/ Website: https://sailingsoulianis.com — Music: All Others: http://sailingsoulianis.com/artlistio-music -------- Use this link to get two free months! PDS Debt is offering a free debt analysis. It only takes thirty seconds. Get yours at https://PDSDebt.com/atticus. One of the toughest things about sailing around the world is the fact that so many of the essential support structures that most people take for granted are always changing. Where we can get our groceries, how we get propane for cooking, where we take our daughter when she gets sick, even something as simple as where we’re allowed to park our dinghy. These core aspects of our life are constantly changing, and that’s one of the fun things about this lifestyle but it can also be really stressful at times. But all of that is about to go to a whole nother level because Desiree is pregnant! Life on the move while being pregnant is seriously challenging, from figuring when and where to have pre-natal check-ups, to where in the world we’re going to have this baby. We love our voyaging lifestyle and we’re so thrilled that we’re going to have this baby but for us to maintain our sanity we need to come up with a solid plan and fast. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. The main saloon is designed for comfort with large windows which allow natural light to flood the space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It has pretty large crew quarters for the size (overflow cabin:) and Rico was pleasantly surprised by the engine room. She is a perfect Affordable Sport Cruiser Motor Yacht the whole family would enjoy! She is currently listed for sale for $699,000. Enjoy the Tour! 😜 Let me know what you guys think of this one in the comments From the start, we have decided to keep our independence & integrity, so we do not accept payments for Yacht Tours and do not "work for hire", this way we can choose and only Tour the vessels we find interesting for our audience. We set sail from Cape Verde to Trinidad and have a good following wind but very lumpy seas. And it stays that way for the first 13 days! It's like living in a tumble dryer. Learn more about our VERY LAST open house or about visiting Arabella here: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome Now that we've got the various stainless tanks and heat shields here at the shop, it's time to start doing this and that around Arabella that we put aside as we waited for their arrival. The starboard side's "main lines" of electrical conduit and get run, and we've just got news this week that we'll be seeing an electrical panel here, one of a couple, in about a month. Supply shortages are putting a delay into the electrical, but luckily, orders are still moving. Joe "The Machinist", as he's known around here, came to work on a couple of different things, and the one we focus on here is for some custom hardware that will make it easy to beautifully mount the under-deck heat shielding that will go above the cook stove, wood stove, and diesel heater. It's always extremely satisfying to see skilled hands at the lathe. And finally, the big project we hit in this installment involves fitting out the head with a few things, mainly the pedestal for the sink, which will act as a bit of storage, but will mostly be for hiding the drain pipe. The sink will be perched onto a surface of oak that will go over the top of the water tank, and of course, there's a cut-out for the inspection port at the top of the water tank. The composting toilet gets some pads of locust that it will sit on after it's permanently installed onto the locust shower grate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Conquering one challenge now onto the next! The world is closing... What do we do? Where do we go? https://www.sailingnandji.com/ This video was filmed in March as the global covid-19 pandemic took off. We left Thailand on the last day of our visas and at this stage the Malaysian border remained open. India and Sri Lanka had closed and Indonesia was threatening to do so. It was important we reach Langkawi as quick as we can so we would not be stuck at sea... If you would like to contribute towards Nandj videos, please use this link. Thank you. http://paypal.me/SailingNandji If you are getting something out of our videos, please become a Patron to help support our production and adventures. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and engage with us more personally! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are up early with the sunrise and head out under sail, close reaching the final 15 nautical miles to Langkawi, Malaysia. Countries were beginning to drastically implement new laws and regulations and us sailors are the most vulnerable. We are hoping to reach a safe harbour before Malaysia shuts the border and we are not exiled at sea. This were changing daily but everything was very new back then and were hopeful that this would not be for long. We continued on with our plans to prepare to leave to Indonesia and we rushed around collecting packages and preparing Nandji for the Indian Ocean. The ladies provision the boat ready for 6 months of sailing and we are waiting on our visas for Indo to be ready and then we are off! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!
