► Aurore was only 5 years old when her father took her on her first transatlantic crossing. Her father is well known among multihull enthusiasts - he is Christian Hernandez, founder of the Multicap Caraïbes (Martinique) and Multicat Algarve (Portugal) shipyards. Thirty years later, father and daughter are once again heading across the Atlantic aboard the Punch 21.10 DC Palm Pleasure 2, a large day-charter catamaran! ► Friday, April 24, departure from Vila Real de Santo António, Portugal. We are delivering the boat to Aruba, a small island in the Dutch Caribbean just off Venezuela. The crew consists of five people alongside my father, the Captain - one of the designers of this Punch - the catamaran’s rigger/sailmaker, a journalist, and myself. I’m taking part in this crossing as a crew member, and it’s my second transatlantic aboard a day-charter boat, whose comfort is naturally a bit basic for long-distance cruising. ► The first leg was to reach the Canary Islands; we sailed mostly under sail, primarily on starboard tack with a steady northerly wind of around twenty knots, which at times also allowed us to sail wing-on-wing. ► We arrived in Las Palmas on the night of Monday, April 27, around midnight. Average speed observed: 8.5 knots, with peaks close to 16 knots while surfing. A technical stop of a few days has been planned to complete the final adjustments, restock supplies, and prepare for the next leg of the crossing. ► Next stage: about two weeks one-on-one with the ocean before arriving in Le Marin, Martinique. Today started with an indoor strength workout using the IsoBow and Bullworker X5, combining isometric holds and dynamic resistance training. It might not look like much from the outside… but the muscle engagement is intense. We had an early appointment this morning, so we made sure to get the workout done first — no excuses, no skipping. ► We got our first look at the MC75 in La Grande-Motte. But this model isn’t exactly new, with hull #1 having been launched in 2023 and already completed two seasons in the Mediterranean and one in the Caribbean. ► On board, it’s all about luxury and comfort, but performance hasn’t been overlooked, judging by the daggerboards - which retract in the event of striking something - that plunge to almost 15 feet (4.5 meters) below the surface. The builder promises, in certain conditions, speeds equal to those of the wind. We’re willing to believe it, since this catamaran, over 76 feet (23 meters) long, was clocked at 29 knots! When Matt first went around the America's in his Albin Vega in 2011 (becoming the first and only person, still to this day, to do it solo and nonstop), he didn't have a radar despite all the icebergs. "I'd also rather have a Valiant 42"! he'd joke when people asked about it. Well, now he does! Nos hemos encontrado con óxidos muy preocupantes en los terminales de la jarcia firme, sobre todo en los bajos de los obenques. Es sabido que el estay proel no se ve, ya que está por dentro del enrollador, así que esta parte de la jarcia firme nos preocupa más. No obstante, procedemos a la compra del barco, ya que el precio es acorde con el estado del barco.
