In this episode, our family splits up for two very different adventures in Panama. Shane and our oldest son, Cole, join a friend’s sailboat to help with a full Panama Canal transit, while I stay back in Linton Bay with Hudson and Addison. Their journey takes them through the first three locks and into Gatun Lake for the night, but the real challenge comes the next day when the line-toss crew doesn’t show up as they approach one of the Pacific locks. A missed throw nearly turns into a big problem. Meanwhile, the kids and I set out on our own whimsical adventure. Spotting monkeys on a morning walk, swimming in a mangrove where crocodiles might be lurking, hopping buses into Panama City, wandering the colourful streets of Casco Viejo, and eating our way through the day. After their long canal crossing and our playful dash through the city, we finally reunite at the anchorage outside Panama City. Two different paths, one unforgettable adventure.

Since 1973, The Ocean Race has been the ultimate test for a team and an unparalleled human endeavor. For nearly 50 years, it has held a near-mythical hold on some of the world's finest sailors and served as the proving ground for legends of our sport. The Ocean Race is often described as the longest and most complicated professional sporting event in the world, the toughest team challenge in sailing and one of the three great events in the sport, alongside the Olympic Games and the America's Cup. However, to truly understand the race, it's best to think of it in a way that the athletes who have competed in it will immediately recognize. Simply put, The Ocean Race is an obsession, and many of the world's best sailors have dedicated years, even decades, of their lives to trying to win it.

Every 3 months, we carry out a lifeboat & rescue boat lowering drill — one of the most important safety routines onboard. As a Chief Officer, it’s my responsibility to ensure our crew stays sharp, confident, and fully prepared for any emergency at sea. From checking release gears, to lowering the boat, to starting the engine and maneuvering, every step matters. This isn’t just a drill — it’s a reminder that the ocean is powerful, and preparation is our best defense. Life at sea comes with responsibility… and this is how we stay ready. 🌊🛟 Let’s find out! #lifeatsea #lifeboat #rescueboat #chiefofficer

To see Richard’s more thorough answer: https://www.yachtsforsaleblog.com/yachts-for-sale/ The idea of the video that I produce of course is to promote the yacht for sale, but should potential buyers worry about whether they will have clean title to the yacht? I spoke to the broker representing the owner of ALFA NERO, Richard Higgins, and he sent me a full answer to your question that I’ve published as a downloadable PDF for anybody interested to read it - a link to that is in the description of this video. Clean title to ANY yacht that you buy is always an issue, and I can’t stress enough how important it is to engage a reputable marine lawyer for any yacht purchase at all, whether it be Alfa Nero or smaller yachts too. Richard’s explanation in the PDF file goes a long way to explaining why you can have confidence in the clean title of ALFA NERO but please - do keep those questions coming, and check out Richard’s explanation that is a little too long to put in a YouTube short.

Step aboard NO RETREAT, a 2020 Hylas 57 (hull #2) and one of the most comprehensively outfitted modern bluewater cruising yachts on the market today. Designed by Bill Dixon and built by Queen Long Marine, a family-owned third-generation shipyard that has been producing Hylas Yachts for over 40 years, this 57-footer blends performance, safety, and true “apartment-style” liveaboard comfort. From her vacuum-infused composite hull, twin rudders, and Jefa torque-tube steering to her hydraulic furling North Sails inventory and Harken 60 Rewind primaries handling the genoa, self-tacking jib, and mainsheet, NO RETREAT is purpose-built for shorthanded passagemaking. Proportional bow and stern thrusters, dual autopilot drives with selector, bow and stern watertight bulkheads, and a highly developed bilge and Arid Bilge system tick every bluewater-safety box. Below decks, you’ll see why this feels like a floating luxury apartment: a full-beam aft owner’s suite, two guest cabins, two heads with separate stall showers, an open galley with Corian counters, European white oak joinery, Dometic 4-zone air conditioning, Sonos with Samsung smart TVs, Starlink Gen3, and a quiet, robust 24V electrical system. Her owner—previously of a 120' sailing yacht—has maintained her to superyacht standards, including fresh bottom paint (Fall 2025) and Semco-sealed teak decks. On deck, this Hylas 57 features a Pearl Gray Alexseal hull, teak decks, FRP hardtop with white/red lighting, hull color-matched arch, electric extending sunshade, 3-sided enclosure, hydraulic teak swim platform, and a serious tender package with Highfield RIB with center console and 40 hp Yamaha on Simpson Lawrence electric davits. Add in the Raymarine AR200 augmented reality cameras, full Raymarine nav suite, satellite weather, KVH TracPhone, and GOST security, and you have a truly turn-key world cruiser. There's steady progress in the yard but we do have to wait for the perfect weather window to paint the top sides so we are finding other things to do during the windy rainy spells. This week our distraction has been METS - the boat show in Amsterdam. It's the biggest boat show in the world and there's not a boat in sight! It's a trade show really with 1,700 exhibitors of boat equipment. To give that some perspective, the biggest actual boat show in the world, Fort Lauderdale, has just a few more than half that number . As a result it takes all three days to get around METS and I'm sure we missed some! We did find some really interesting things though. Great new products and we learned about some established ones as well, things that would be really good to have on the boat, so it was a very successful trip. It's not always possible to give the depth of information that people want so we've added links below to the products we looked at so you can find out more. Also do feel free to ask questions in the comments and remember we will be reviewing some of these products on board Fair Isle so keep watching the episodes to see how they do. ePropulsion Spirit 2: There has been talk of a more powerful version of the Spirit outboard for some time and we have been eagerly waiting for its arrival. So it was a pleasant surprise to see it launched at METS this year and it looks like they have done a great job with it. Boosting power and range but still keeping the ease of portability we love with the Spirit 1 and even improving some design features taking ideas from the eLite version. The Spirit 2 won't be available to the public until spring / summer 2026 unfortunately, but we do hope to get an advanced unit for testing early next year. https://www.epropulsion.com/products/electric-outboards/spirit-2 Comfort Seat: We get asked about the seats we have on board more than anything else. We actually bought our small ones off some friends in Cartagena 6 years ago who had purchased too many and we are very glad we did. These seats are amazing and the larger version with the leg and head support changed our lives on board as we use them while sailing as well as lazing around. It means we dont have to have a bunch of cockpit cushions that need to be stored somewhere when not in use and they are a whole lot more comfortable too. Comfort seat are a small family run Dutch company and we are glad that people are getting to know about their fabulous seats. https://comfortseat.nl/# Marco: We have had several domestic water pumps on Fair isle, all have been unreliable and very very noisy! We mentioned this in our last episode and several people said to go and look at Marco pumps which are made in Italy. Luckily they had a stand at the show and we were very impressed with what we saw. Look them up, you won't be dissapointed! https://items.marco.it/en/products/pumps/gear-pumps/marine/page/4.html Mantus: We have been very impressed with Mantus after swapping to their anchor and swivel. They are a great company to deal with, take pride in their products and listen to feedback and constantly strive to improve their gear to be the best available. So it was no surprise at METS that the M1 and M2 anchors have gone through a round of changes, little tweaks to improve them further based on feedback from users and in house testing. The M1 has some ribs on the shank to improve strength and the M2 has a twist on the little ears to help the fluke dig down in softer substrates and to help keep the anchor square on a reset. We will be testing the new design later this year. https://www.mantusmarine.com/new-m1-design/?srsltid=AfmBOor0sSv9g6o2Tm_NIHdInuq_761rHf7IJIOqIVZm7_mjwQi534dS&v=28886f13f578 Bruntons Props We were looking for a possible replacement for our MaxProp which is now on the limits of its wear. We need a feathering prop on Fair Isle that fully flips around to give proper grip in reverse as this is key to maneuverability in tight spaces with a long keeled sailboat. The MaxProp does well with this but the Bruntons prop does the same job in reverse and has some other key advantages with its ability to constantly vary its pitch. We are very much looking forward to testing a Bruntons Prop so do look out for the review video which will be coming next year. https://bruntonspropellers.com/ Henri Lloyd: We have been very disappointed with the quality of some of our sailing clothing over the years. This culminated in a very expensive sailing jacket I bought at the Annapolis boat show 2 years ago literally falling apart after being worn about a dozen times. Asking around, the company that people were rating for quality was Henri Lloyd and they have recently been focusing on their marine clothing over all their other lines. It was great to meet the guys that run the company who are all keen sailors and are passionate about what they do. https://www.henrilloyd.com/

Départ de Tyrell Bay à Cariacou en direction de Grenade

Inside the Market returns for November 2025 with a straight talking look at what is really happening in the yacht world right now. In this episode, Berthon International’s Sue Grant is joined by Alan Baines, Managing Director of Berthon USA, to unpack refit trends, pricing reality, and why some yachts are quietly selling while others sit and gather dust. They begin in Palma, where Berthon’s refit and service operation is busier than ever, but the profile of work has shifted. The focus now is on seaworthiness, safety and essential maintenance, not teak decks and shiny cosmetics. Owners are spending to keep boats safe and moving, not to win beauty contests. Across the Atlantic, the US brokerage market is surprisingly active, helped by one key factor: realistic sellers. Alan explains that where owners accept genuine market value, yachts are changing hands. Where they cling to 2022 pricing, they simply do not. Overpriced yachts remain a major drag on the market, often the result of brokers over promising to secure the listing in the first place. That leads to one of the central themes of this episode. The market is more diverse and specialised than ever, and no broker can credibly be an expert in every segment. Choosing someone who truly understands your type of yacht may not support an over optimistic asking price, but it dramatically improves the chances of a sale within a sensible time frame. Price remains the main driver of deals. Extra equipment and long option lists rarely raise the headline number. They make a yacht easier to sell, not inherently worth more. In a cautious, cost conscious environment, buyers reward value, not gadget count. Presentation also matters. With a good choice of yachts on the market, buyers are deeply project averse. Cluttered interiors, obvious deferred maintenance and “fixer upper” listings are sticking. Clean, de personalised, well prepared yachts are the ones that get serious viewings and offers. Location is the final, often overlooked, factor. As winter bites and charter flights shut down, anything parked in a hard to reach corner of the Med or Caribbean becomes difficult to show. If a visit involves multiple connections and an overnight stay, most buyers will simply not go. Until flight schedules resume in spring, badly located yachts are at a real disadvantage. Across the conversation, Sue and Alan keep circling back to seven simple truths that define this market right now: 1.Refit demand is strong, but focused on safety and seaworthiness. 2.In the USA, deals are happening where sellers accept true market pricing. 3.There are still too many overpriced yachts, often the result of over promising to win listings. 4.Specialist brokers who know a segment deeply give owners the best chance of a timely sale. 5.Yachts are selling on price. Extra kit helps them sell, but does not add real value. 6.Poorly presented yachts are being left behind. Buyers do not want projects. 7.With winter here, remote locations make yachts hard to show and harder to sell. If you want an honest view of where the market really sits at the end of 2025, this one is worth a listen. Deus me apresentou o amor de verdade e me devolveu a vida. Tenha um olhar de carinho pra vida que, em algum momento, ela vai te retribuir. #sonho #de #vida #viajar #conhecer #o #mundo

After months of nonstop boat work, a collapsing weather window, and one very costly mistake (yes… we accidentally pumped saltwater into our freshwater tank 🤦‍♂️), we’re finally doing it — Sailing Zola is officially leaving the dock! This episode is the most chaotic, emotional, and satisfying one we’ve filmed yet. Between ripping out air conditioners, installing a brand-new Seawater Pro water maker, dealing with rigging failures, last-minute wiring, provisioning, cleaning, and help from literally every friend and family member we have… it all came down to one moment: Fresh water finally flowing. The boat cleaned up. Sails raised. Lines off. And Zola heading into the blue. PLUS — we announce the solar arch giveaway winners at the end of the video! 🎉 If you’ve ever wondered what it really looks like to prep a cruising boat under pressure, this episode is as real as it gets. ⛵ Thanks for being here and supporting the journey. Subscribe to follow us as we kick off the adventure we’ve worked so hard for. Let’s not sugarcoat it—if you’ve got a boat on the market right now, you're sitting on a floating financial disaster. The gold rush is over. The wild optimism of the pandemic boat boom is gone, replaced by a buyer ghost town. This isn't just a downturn—it's a full-on reckoning. This video breaks down why owning a boat is a financial disaster in 2025. We cover: The Post-Boom Hangover: Why thousands of boats are listed, but no one's buying. The Cost Trap: Why brutal marina fees, rising insurance, and relentless maintenance crush budgets. The Death of the Liveaboard Dream: Why regulations and costs are pushing long-term residents ashore. The Solution: Why smart sailors are going small (pocket cruisers, trailer sailers) to chase sunsets without going broke. If you're still clinging to that fantasy of selling high, it might be time to stop dreaming of a profit—and start thinking about cutting your losses. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Gold Rush is Over 00:45 1.
