What does restoring a 200-year-old Danish barn have to do with wooden boat building? Quite a lot, actually. In this episode, I travel to Denmark to help my friend Mikkel transition his online boatbuilding school into a hands-on learning space. Together, we repair and restore part of an 1800s timber-frame barn using traditional materials and methods — lime mortar, reclaimed bricks, scarf joints, and careful structural thinking. Along the way, we talk about: • Timber frame repairs and structural problem solving • Why lime mortar is better than cement for historic buildings • Reusing original materials whenever possible • How traditional construction mirrors wooden boat restoration • The philosophy of repair vs. replacement • Preserving history while adapting buildings for modern use There’s a strong connection between repairing an old boat and restoring an old building. In both cases, it’s about understanding structure, respecting materials, keeping as much original fabric as possible, and solving puzzles thoughtfully. The RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show 2026 saw over 9,000 people visit Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre in the UK over the weekend of 21st & 22nd February to take in the feast of boats on display. There is a plethora of dinghy sailing classes in the UK, which is both a blessing and a curse for the sport, with some allowing restricted development over the years and others being almost completely open in design. Strict One Design classes have no change at all, whilst a few decide to make evolutionary changes, which can help the longevity of equipment, or make the boat easier to sail, without making existing boats uncompetitive. There were more classes celebrating significant anniversaries at the show than those we talked to, but a combination of time and availability led us the ones we feature here. Classes we speak to in this video are: - The B14 celebrating its 40th Anniversary - The Solo celebrating its 70th Anniversary - The Shearwater celebrating its 70th Anniversary - The Kestrel celebrating its 70th Anniversary - The Merlin Rocket celebrating its 80th Anniversary - The Firefly celebrating its 80th Anniversary - The National 12 celebrating its 90th Anniversary - The Norfolk Punt celebrating its 100th Anniversary Why is the number of dinghy classes both a blessing and a curse? In this episode of our Arctic sailing documentary, we explore the dramatic fjords and remote anchorages of Svalbard. From Ny Ålesund we navigate into Kongsfjorden towards the imposing front of Kronebreen, carefully assessing drifting ice and the possibility of uncharted shallows as we approach the glacier. At Peirsonhamna anchorage, we maintain an ice watch as icebergs drift through the bay, testing our anchoring strategy and Arctic seamanship. We even attempt to move a drifting bergy bit with the dinghy to better understand the scale and force of these frozen masses. Ashore, we visit the historic marble mining remains of Ny London, founded by Ernest Mansfield’s Northern Exploration Company in 1911. Rusting machinery, abandoned railway tracks and weathered cabins stand as stark reminders of early industrial ambition in the High Arctic. In Ny Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost settlements, our friend Linda guides us through its history — from coal mining town to international Arctic research hub. We see the historic telegraph station and the mooring mast used for Roald Amundsen’s 1926 North Pole airship expedition. Continuing south, we sail into Tempelfjorden and anchor at Bionahamna beneath the striking sedimentary formations of Temple Mountain. We approach Tunabreen glacier in calm conditions, capturing Polaris against the vast Arctic ice landscape. L’après-midi, profitant du calme à bord, je prépare un gâteau de semoule pour l’équipage. Ambiance détendue. En fin de journée, nous partons à terre pour une courte marche dans les hauteurs ; relief escarpé et belles vues sur la côte. Je prends l’annexe pour rejoindre la ville et compléter le gasoil. Retour à bord sans difficulté. Le mouillage reste tranquille. Repos, entretien courant du bord et surveillance régulière du mouillage. Conditions toujours favorables. Cette semaine au chantier, on pensait installer tranquillement nos nouveaux winchs arrières pour les voiles d’avant. Au programme : Remplacement du joint de saildrive Diagnostic et réparation de la pompe à eau douce Montage des sous-barbes du bout-dehors Mise en place des repères de chaîne Bref… une semaine productive. Mais en démontant le plafond pour accéder au dessous du pont et fixer les winchs, on découvre quelque chose d’inattendu : Du bois mouillé, du sel qui ressort… et une infiltration lente qu’on n’avait pas identifiée. On pensait avancer, On rajoute un problème.
