► Deck equipment manufacturer Wichard unveiled a new anchor swivel at Metstrade, previewing it ahead of its commercial release. ► The purpose of this device is simple: to make anchor retrieval more reliable and avoid those frequent situations where the anchor comes up misaligned and refuses to sit properly on the bow roller. For multihulls, where the height of the bows and the geometry of the bow roller can sometimes make anchor handling tricky, this type of mechanical assistance is particularly useful. ► Available in three sizes, the swivel covers chain diameters from 6 to 14 mm and fits most anchors on the market. It is made of 316L stainless steel, an alloy chosen for its corrosion resistance, which is essential in this critical location of the ground tackle. The unit is positioned between the chain and the anchor, replacing a conventional swivel without adding excessive thickness. ► Its distinctive feature is its asymmetrical design. As Eric Butreau, Wichard’s Marketing and Communications Manager, explains: “The idea is to naturally guide the rotation of the anchor. Even if it arrives poorly oriented, the swivel realigns it with the bow roller.” ► This automatic repositioning limits jolts on the windlass, avoids the need for manual intervention, and smooths out the whole sequence of weighing anchor, even in bigger seas or when the multihull gets caught by a gust. ► Installation is deliberately simple: two pins to remove, a threadlocking glue to apply, and the part is in place in a matter of minutes. ► We didn’t manage to catch up with Honda at Metstrade, due to conflicting schedules, but their major new product, a new V6 engine, was unveiled at the show. We finally got to see this new outboard at the Paris Nautic Show with Thomas Delavenne, regional manager of Honda Marine France. ► The engine, available in 200, 225, and 250 horsepower versions, features a completely redesigned look. Understated, more contemporary, and now consistent with the more powerful BF350, the new V6 significantly modernizes the range. While the engine is very attractive, it’s the internal evolution that really makes an impression. Honda has reworked the injection system, which historically could have been improved in certain generations. The result is enhanced acceleration, smoother power and, according to the brand, up to 20% less fuel consumption in certain speed ranges. The exhaust has also been optimized, significantly reducing noise, a sensitive issue on family boats and outboard-powered multihulls. ► Another notable advance is full compatibility with the BF350’s rigging. Controls, wiring harnesses, and electronic logic are harmonized, simplifying original equipment installation and refining twin-engine setups. ► Honda also emphasizes accessories, a feature that Thomas is keen to highlight. The new electronic controls offer a more precise and fluid feel. The electronics now include useful features such as trim support, which automatically adjusts the trim according to speed, and auto-tilt, which raises the engine with a double click without remaining pressed. Unfortunately, our stay among the Aeolian islands is short due to forcasted high winds in the area of the islands and through the Strait of Messina. The next day is our passage through the Strait where we narrowly miss Charybdis and Scilla and find a breath wind that carries us down the coast of Sicily. We are enchanted by the coastline of Sicily with its dense mountainside villages. Arriving in Taormina, we are happy to find what appears to be a welcome anchorage but suddenly take two hits to the hull from what sounded like BB gun fire as we looked for an anchor spot close to some abandoned buildings. We immediately go out, far and deep and check for damage as evening approaches. In this particular spot, we don't feel comfortable leaving the boat and plan on leaving the following morning.

After 4 years of battling with chalky gel-coat on Fair Isle we've bitten the bullet and painted. We had enquired about this a few years back in Lagos but the cost was astronomical. Like most places having the boat sprayed there means taking the mast off and putting the boat in a sealed shed so conditions can be controlled for painting. We knew we had to spray as with the ridges in Fair Isle roll and tipping would have been fiendishly difficult and also wrapping would not be straight forward as the wrap would have to be pushed down into the groves and would even though people have told me this can be done I remain dubious that it won't pull away over time. Fortunately we have had very good reports of the outdoor spraying done in the yard in Portimao. Several friends have had their boats done here with excellent results so we had high hopes of getting a good finish. We did our own prep work to keep costs down even more which was hard work but the guys here are very good at helping and advising so all perfectly doable. Luckily we had a nice break before the onslaught of work as well, a lovely trip down the canals in Belgium. Episode 21. The Battle Is Lost. (Covering Late April 2025) The Sketchy boatyard stands firm on not splashing Bennie unless I resolve a non-existent salvagers bill. And unable to get hold of the salvage company owner for weeks, or confront the yard owner who has not been around either, my time on the island runs out and with it any hopes of taking possession of my boat. I also meet some brave local kids and Hurricane survivors who have incredible survival stories, and who remind me that losing a boat is not the end of the world and show me their incredible resilience and tenacity. Finally I head back to Grenada where Spear It Animal and Andy the Uber Awesome South African all gave me a lead on a mast. The folks at the Boat Galley asked on their social media if people liked winter cruising. A question with lots of nuance. The Christmas winds or early winter storms create very short windows to get south on the Atlantic. Often shorter than the time required between safe ports, and almost never aligned well with daylight, we can get very complex when you add in the tidal requirements to enter some inlets, as they can have several knots of current. Toni and I had hoped to hold a boat blessing early on, but the timing never quite worked out. Now, as we prepare for our voyage south, we were fortunate to have Deacon Jim and his wife Ginger—both seasoned sailors—join us to bless "Moments in Time".
