We’d heard that Lady Elliot Island was teeming with sea life… and it absolutely lived up to the hype. From the moment we slipped into the water, we were surrounded. Schools of fish everywhere, turtles gliding effortlessly past – already enough to make this place special. But then it went to another level. An entire squadron of manta rays joined us, and what followed was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve ever had. Hours in the water, watching these graceful, majestic creatures move with such ease… it’s hard to put into words just how magical it felt to be part of their world, even for a moment. Out of the water, we took time to explore the island itself – a full loop walk that takes around 30–40 minutes and offers a completely different perspective of this unique little coral cay. And for those following along from Part 1 – the verdict on the mooring is in. We tried the northern buoy, but the southern end proved to be the better option. Both have a bit of roll, but the southern side handled the swell far more comfortably. It’s not the easiest anchorage, and definitely one to time with calmer conditions… but without a doubt, it’s worth it. Lady Elliot Island had been on our list for a long time – and now we know why. We slid into a side tie slip in Coinjock, VA with no reservation, feeling like absolute renegades. Our buddy boat “Winging It” somehow scored a table at the Coinjock Restaurant without a reservation, and we had exactly five minutes to get ourselves seated before the prime rib gods gave our spot away. Visions of that world famous Coinjock prime rib danced in my head like a meaty Broadway number. I leapt onto the dock, ready to sprint to the table like a man who had trained his whole life for this moment. Then—plop—a single raindrop kissed my nose. Back aboard I went to close up the boat. And that’s when it happened. That sound. That awful, soul draining, wallet tightening sound. Everything went quiet. My breath left my body. Somewhere, a seagull screamed. I had left the VHF handset at the helm. In my prime rib panic, I closed the port helm window… directly onto the delicate Cortex tether cord. It didn’t stand a chance. One gentle crunch and the cord gave up on life entirely. No power. No red light. No hope. How did two people in their 20s afford to buy a sailboat and sail around the world? In this episode of Stella Overboard, we finally sit down and share the full story of how we went from living in a beat-up van in Australia to buying a 39ft sailboat and sailing across Southeast Asia full-time. A few years ago we had almost no money, no house, no savings, and honestly no idea what our future looked like. After meeting in Byron Bay, Australia, we spent months living out of our van, traveling the coast, surfing, fishing, and trying to figure out how we could create a completely different life for ourselves. That’s when we made the decision to work FIFO mining jobs in remote Western Australia. FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) work meant living for weeks at a time in isolated mining camps deep in the Australian outback, working exhausting 12-hour shifts in extreme heat, dirt, iron ore dust, and nonstop routines. It was physically and mentally draining, but it gave us one opportunity we never thought we’d have — the ability to save serious money quickly. For nearly two years we sacrificed comfort, freedom, time together, and pretty much everything normal people in their 20s were doing… all with one goal: Buy a sailboat and escape the traditional path. While many people around us were buying houses, financing cars, and settling into city life, we took a completely different route and invested everything into a life of adventure, freedom, travel, sailing, surfing, and living off-grid on the ocean. Our Indonesian adventure continues as we sail towards the world-famous Komodo National Park, with a few unforgettable stops along the way. First, we visit the stunning Rangko Cave, swimming in its crystal-clear water before finishing the day with an incredible sunset overlooking Labuan Bajo from Sylvia Hill. This week we’re giving you a full walkthrough of our homebuilt catamaran to show just how much progress has happened lately. When you work on a project every single day, it’s hard to notice the small changes — but once we started walking through each space, even we were surprised by how far things have come. Along the way, we’ll show some of the projects we completed over the winter that never made it into an episode, including repainting all of the cabinets (because apparently I couldn’t leave them alone 😅), updates to the engine rooms, and some of the systems now being prepared for hoses, pumps, and plumbing. We also talk about a few areas currently on hold while we wait for materials and supplies to arrive. Before the walkthrough, I start tackling one of the biggest exterior jobs yet: prepping the cabin top for paint. Since we decided to move away from gelcoat and paint the boat instead, we now need to sand away the glossy surface and identify any low spots before primer can begin. Thankfully, the first test sections went much better than expected. After using a guide coat to check fairness, we found far fewer low spots than we were bracing ourselves for — which hopefully means a lot less sanding when we move on to the hull sides next spring. It is one thing to have a machined cylinder head delivered to the boat, but it is another thing entirely to find the surface contaminated before it even touches the block. I am prepping the engine block for our newly machined cylinder head while Dave works to clean up the contamination he found upon unwrapping it. He gets the surface ready using a razor blade and nipple remover so we can move forward with the rebuild. We reassemble the top of the engine and torque the head bolts in sequence to the exact Volvo Penta MD2030 specs. After the intensity of the mechanical work, finishing the assembly is the perfect excuse to bake a cake in our countertop oven. In this episode, we head back to Sant Agusti to escape a building southwesterly wind. The passage quickly turns into a rusty start-of-season reality check when we get a serious override on the winch and have to cut the jib sheet to free it! Once safely anchored, we go ashore for a quick grocery run and well-earned ice creams in town. Back on board, I swap out the membrane and housing on the watermaker — it’s now producing better than ever, but we still have a small leak to sort. Later, we meet up with Marcus on the water to collect our long-awaited parcels he brought all the way from Cartagena. And finally… after 10 days of waiting, Helios gets her zinc anodes back on!
