Last week we cut out the old engine bed and compared it with the new one — this week, it’s time for one of the most critical steps of our refit: installing the new carbon fibre engine bed for our bigger Nanni. Getting this right is essential. The bed has to be cut precisely to fit around the bulkheads without losing strength, then laminated in carbon fibre to carry the weight of the engine for years to come. With such a tight engine room, even the smallest error could make fitting the engine a serious challenge. In this video we explore the ups and downs of Bermuda in the winter months. Would we spend the winter in Bermuda again? We would definitely spend a winter in Bermuda again, but there are some things we would do differently. Bermuda is an expensive location, so the more you can stock up on everything from food, to spares, and even supplies for boat projects, before you leave for Bermuda, the better off you will be. Water must be purchased in Bermuda, so a means to collect rain water, or a water maker would be a real cost saver. The frequent gales in Bermuda, means that you need to have good ground tackle that’s easy to deploy, or rent a mooring in a protective cove. We are replacing all of our appliances, and that requires a new counter! While removing the old one, we discovered just how heavy Corian is. It's are to believe anyone puts it in a catamaran. In this episode we are building a new counter from Coosa Board laminated with 1/8 inch fiberglass sheet. We're pretending we know how to be carpenters by using biscuits to join the pieces and even created drop edges. The wind's not blowing, but we're still going! In this video, We’re breaking down how far our1971 Pearson 35 can go on an electric motor alone. After months in the boatyard, we made some serious upgrades to improve the boat's efficiency, including: -Swapping the old 2-blade sailing prop for a new 3-blade feathering prop. -Sealing up the centerboard cavity on the bottom of the keel. -Fairing the bottom of the hull for a smooth finish. With these changes, we've seen a huge improvement in speed and range under power. We'll test it all out and see just how many nautical miles we can get! The list of surprises keeps growing. This season we decide to tackle some much need love below the waterline which never had a barrier coat. This doesn't go without a few hiccups or extra things to fix should I say. The rudder comes down to fix a structural issue where it's mounted, our propeller also has to be removed in order to replace the cutlass bearing, the strut gets welded, a water tank removed and the task of sanding the hull to bare glass begins. This leads to finding an old damage and making a huge hole in our keel, not ideal. All of that between some serious cleaning after our extremely moldy and wet return. Filmed Fall 2024. This week’s episode takes us from the Isle of Harris back to the mainland, calling first into Shieldaig near Gairloch before heading to Plockton. After a quiet night there, we set off at 6am for a day sail south — timing our departure carefully to catch the tides at Kyle Rhea, where currents can run up to 9 knots against you if you get it wrong. The forecast warned of rough Atlantic weather sweeping in, and it quickly lived up to its promise. What began as a lively sail with 20+ knots of wind soon turned into something tougher. As we closed in on Ardnamurchan Point, seas grew over 2 metres with waves coming from two directions, winds gusted 30–35 knots, and everything started to go wrong: Mast leaks & chain plates dripping below deck Guard rail coming undone Boat hook nearly lost overboard Headsail sheet tangled & tender almost pulled away Bow burying under confused seas After 12+ exhausting hours at sea, we finally turned on the engine to punch into the big waves and push round the point into shelter. 14 hours later, battered and wet but safe, we tied back up in Plockton — very ready for rest (and a well-earned curry!).
