In this episode we head north into Oregon for a hot second and check out the pillars of Rome. Music by Random Temple (https://soundcloud.com/randomtemple) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs about my Vanlife, sharing vanlife ideas, vanlife tips, and travel diaries. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I live in a van, which certainly cuts costs down but still I need to make some money in order to afford to continue, currently I make 90% of my income through working as a photographer/videographer. I regularly work for Airbnb as a real estate photographer and I also take on bigger commercial contracts whenever I get the chance. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, Nikon D810, Sony RX100 iii, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, Underwater Housing, tripods and lights. - What is your van? 1992 Dodge B350 Travelhome with the 5.9L TBI gas engine. I spent $3500 buying it and so far another $9000 in repairs upgrades and maintenance. - What're your plans? Travel forever. The Arctic this summer, Asia next winter, Sailboat the world after. I want to see this whole world, and I'm playing it all by ear. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live in a van with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. If I have to leave him inside the van I cover the front seats so he can't climb up and stare out the window and bark. I cover all the windows with reflectix panels I made for insulation, I turn my fantastic sucking air out on max (replaces all the air in the van every 90 seconds). I crack one window in a shaddy lower part of the van to create a consistent airflow. Other than that the fiberglass roof and insulation do a fantastic job of keeping the heat out. In colder climates I set the furnace on at minimum and close down all the windows same as for heat minus venting. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go seperate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharring my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time.

"After 2 months living in Bali in our sabbatical time in Canggu, going to surf and kitesurf, eating nasi goreng... it was time to re-think our lives and the plans for 2017. That's how the Odd Life Crafting project was created" Roberta “After I finished my civil engineering degree in Brazil in the end of 2015 I decided that I wanted to take an extra step. So with the full support of my long time adventure partner I started a Master Degree at Sydney University and that’s how we sold most of our belongings and moved from Brazil to Australia. But 6 months later we realized that actually that was not what we were looking for. So instead of flying back straight to our country, we decided to take a few sabbatical months and travel until the end of 2016. The plan was simple, we wanted to travel to places where it is cheap and/or comfortable, and take the time to think about our own lives so we could decide what we wanted to do from 2017 and on. That’s the story we tell in this first season of Odd Life Crafting” Duca WEEKLY EPISODES EVERY FRIDAY!! We hope to inspire other people to go out and live their dreams. "These shoes are made for walking"... Well maybe not with flip flops when you're hiking in the forest ;) Join us as we explore Terre De Haut in Les Saintes by walking up and down the hills. It's such a beautiful island and so colorful. Then we sail to Guadeloupe along the west coast of Basse Terre to the anchorage in Deshaies where Malin bakes a tasty galley bread. Galley bread á la Carpe Diem á la RAN: 8 dl (3,38 American cups) wheat flour 2 dl (0,84 cups) rye flour or other kind of whole grain 25 gr (0,88 oz) dry yeast 5 dl (2,11 cups) water around 40 C 2 tablespoons of oil 2-3 teaspoons of salt Sunseed, hazelnuts or what you prefer to give some "bite". Mix everything and then knead the dough. It's pretty sticky. Wipe the bread pan with some oil. Pour the dough in the bread pan and let it rise for 30 minutes. The dough should be about twice the size when it's done. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes on the highest temperature. Wait a while before taking out the bread from the pan and it will come out easier. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us. WANT MORE? For more information on SAS or ISAF please visit http://www.sailaweighllc.com Or http://www.ussailing.org/ for additional information. I had to attend the safety at sea seminar in order for Volvo to let me tryout for the OBR job. This is some of the footage I captured during my experience. Sponsored by http://soundclipstudio.com/ Sound engineer Sean Powers Produced and Edited by Justin Richard Edelman For photos please use this link https://1drv.ms/f/s!AiNdRMBQrf3egZR0SHsVKOExZ1u76A Interview with John Miller, USCG Merchant Marine Master with Sailing Endorsement Justin: Why are more races pushing the SAS certificate? John: It is a proven fact from data collected from World Sailing (formerly ISAF), RYA, US Sailing, USCG . . . Trained sailors have fewer accidents and when they do have an accident, the seriousness of the consequences are not as great as compared to those who have no training; simple logic. World Sailing and RYA (Royal Yachting Association) have been leaders in the industry to push for both didactic and hands-on training for safety certification programs. US Sailing has recently partnered with World Sailing to standardize safety programs globally. In addition, World Sailing and ORR (Offshore Racing Rules) have codified safety training requirements in racing rules; the basis for individual event NOR's (Notice of Race). Couple this with Marine insurers who have reviewed the data and are requiring compliance with NOR's and you have a perfect storm. Justin: Was there any particular event that caused the program to be put in place? John: Actually PacCup 2018 is requiring US Sailing 2 Day SAS with hands-on training or ISAF (equivalent program offered by World Sailing). This is an upgrade from the requirement of 1 or 2 Day SAS for the owner, captain, all watch captains a minimum of 30% of crew; now accepting only the 2 Day SAS or ISAF. On the Eastern Seaboard, ARC - World Cruising Club is requiring the 2 Day SAS OR ISAF for ALL crew. Atlantic Cup is quickly moving to match ARC. TransPac is discussing to standardize to the 2 Day SAS like PacCup. Locally, the Newport to Ensenada Race (200 yachts) notified all registered vessels that they will be enforcing NOR requirements for safety training. Putting it altogether, upgraded requirements coupled with stricter enforcement is driving the need for participants to certify, re-certify and take safety training seriously. Justin: In your words, why is it important to do SAS?\ John: Being a USCG Merchant Marine Master with Sailing Endorsement, I am responsible for the safety and well being of every crew and passenger on my vessel. Tropic Thunder exceeds minimum requirements of safety gear, policies and procedures. Regardless, the best equipped, best designed and fastest vessel has no value without a trained and experienced crew. The best safety products, equipment, policies and procedures have no value if the crew and passengers do not know how to properly use them. The Boat Life http://bit.ly/HelpFundMoreVideos or buy yourself a shirt http://www.TheBoat.Life/shop It has been a while since the last boat failed the survey. We are still looking, but there just haven't been many perspective vessels. We have been keeping busy with part-time jobs and family and friends, but still no boat. The process has certainly been slower than I had expected. Luckily, we have been in beautiful Sarasota, FL where there are white sand beaches and beautiful weather. That's The Boat Life! Thanks for watching. This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat. The plan was sell everything, buy a boat, live on a boat, and travel and explore the Caribbean and the world while living aboard! The uniform is boardshorts and bikinis. Simple plan, but lots to learn and do along the way. Join our adventure as we sail away on sv Dodi, our Island Packet IP27, live on a sailboat, and explore life aboard. I have a list of videos I could be making- I have a list of about 5 personal videos I'm in the middle of editing- I could have finished those. However, since I'm doing this daily thing in April I decided to pick a fun idea that just came to me rather than doing what I had planned :) I edited this one just for me- really fast, so it's not what I had envisioned, but it was fun. We got our hands on German backcountry freestyle specialist Elias Elhardt's hard drive, and found a whole bunch of epic, unseen POV GoPro shots. It's hard to pick a highlight here - the dam spines are intense, AK is suitably insane and there's goodtimes in Kitz and Riks - but it's the dream line in Arlberg with Victor Daviet, that got us - and Elias by the sound of things - most hyped. E16 Weekly Blog of our Narrowboat Travels. This week we left Aylesbury and headed back up the Aylesbury Arm to the Grand Union. The narrowboat ahead of us was reversing all the way back up the canal! Left onto the Grand Union and towards Stoke Bruene. We made new friends and shared a flight of locks. A great night at the Boat Inn at Stoke Bruene and another attempt at a quiz at the Navigation with a tiny bit of improvement in our score. The Mavic Pro had a workout this week too with aqueducts and viaducts. Keep an eye out for next week's episode. Music by Youth Signals (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVr8B-W5vVUNjTzzykrmxtA) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world.
Imagine if this windlass malfunction happened on a remote Indonesian coast? In this episode Jamie reaches the end of his tether when the anchor windlass decides it has had enough. In order to diagnose the problem it has to be removed from the deck, and that's where the issues begin. We take you into the classroom and show you how a windlass works. Welcome to LIFE IS LIKE SAILING. We hope you enjoy following along with us as we explore Canada's West Coast. Since 1997 I have cruised the British Columbia coast and since 2011 it was on our 1982 C&C 34. Although we have traveled from the most southern borders to the most norther borders, we still have a lot more exploring to do. We now own a beautiful 1979 Hans Christian 43 Ketch and we will continue cruising British Columbia's coast and possibly beyond one day. Here we show you how to fly a burgee (flag) from the top of a busy masthead on a sailing boat. To do this, all we need is a pig stick, couple of cheek blocks, and a continuous loop of line. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ Our masthead has a VHF antenna and a windex wind indicator. In order to fly a burgee above these you need to use a pig stick to hoist the flag above all the obstructions so it can fly freely. Why fly a burgee from the masthead? On a recent sail to Corsica we had the following flags to fly: Red Ensign (off the stern), Courtesy flag of France (highest position on the stbd spreader), Courtesy flag of Corsica (Lower position on stbd spreader). In this situation the only proper place to fly a burgee is off the masthead. We also think a burgee flown from the masthead makes any boat look traditional and lovely, with a nod back to the days of sail. :-) If you want to do this you need: ⚫ A thin, bendy stick (local DIY store or garden centre). You can carve the ends to have grooves which will keep it tied into position. ⚫ 2 x cheek blocks like these on Ebay.com: http://fave.co/2p4rEgk ⚫ Some line like this on Amazon.com: http://fave.co/2p4MKuX A burgee of your choice :-) We find it simple but effective, so we thought we'd share it with you in this 'Sailing Tips' video. THIS BOAT IS NOW FOR SALE! Click here... http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, our work on preparing NAndji for our big voyage is interupted by a little storm called Cyclone Debbie. Luckily we were 1500km South from where Debbie made landfall, but we still managed to get the aftermath of Debbies wrath. We had winds predicted of 40 knots and it peaked at 55 knots! We are very happy with our decision to head into the marina and lucky to get the last berth! With Nandji safe, we head over to Koresails to continue with our sail bag construction. We have a birds eye view of Nandji whilst she copes it sweet from Debbie. Hope you enjoy!
