In Havana, Race for Water is still a source of curiosity and great conversations. The crew was recently treated to a surprise : a historic visit from Rear Admiral Msc. José L Cuza Téllez de Girón, who fought alongside Raúl Castro in the Cuban revolution. He took advantage of Race for Water’s stopover in Havana to tour the ship and learn about our mission to promote renewable energy and fight plastics pollution. In talking with the crew, Msc. José L Cuza Téllez de Girón showed great interest in the state of the world’s oceans, and the need to take action to protect them. We were able to capture the conversation on video. The Race for Water Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the water and the oceans in particular. Today, seriously under threat from plastic pollution, it is imperative that this essential resource for life is protected. To prevent plastic waste from reaching the waterways and oceans by developing social models and business models that give value to plastic waste and hence encourage its collection. Well here's part 2 of the boat survey. This time the boat is up on the hard and has all the ancillaries checked, electronics, hull, rigging etc. The following day we hire a car and do a bit of exploring and finish off with some skinny dipping in a secluded beach cove. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you found it informative or entertaining please give it a thumbs as it helps get YouTube to promote it outside of the existing subscribers. I make travel vlogs about my Vanlife, sharing vanlife ideas, vanlife tips, and travel diaries. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I live in a van, which certainly cuts costs down but still I need to make some money in order to afford to continue, currently I make 90% of my income through working as a photographer/videographer. I regularly work for Airbnb as a real estate photographer and I also take on bigger commercial contracts whenever I get the chance. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, Nikon D810, Sony RX100 iii, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, Underwater Housing, tripods and lights. - What is your van? 1992 Dodge B350 Travelhome with the 5.9L TBI gas engine. I spent $3500 buying it and so far another $9000 in repairs upgrades and maintenance. - What're your plans? Travel forever. The Arctic this summer, Asia next winter, Sailboat the world after. I want to see this whole world, and I'm playing it all by ear. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live in a van with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. If I have to leave him inside the van I cover the front seats so he can't climb up and stare out the window and bark. I cover all the windows with reflectix panels I made for insulation, I turn my fantastic sucking air out on max (replaces all the air in the van every 90 seconds). I crack one window in a shaddy lower part of the van to create a consistent airflow. Other than that the fiberglass roof and insulation do a fantastic job of keeping the heat out. In colder climates I set the furnace on at minimum and close down all the windows same as for heat minus venting. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go seperate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharring my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time.

Is your sailing lifestyle becoming boring? What's life like on a boat - does it grow old? When should you stop sailing? How old are most liveaboards? Are they all young, or pensioners? Are there old liveaboards? When's the time to quit? Do people ever stop living the dream? Once you've lived the dream, what next? Doesn't it get boring? The adventure just got bigger. The Caribbean adventure starts with my solo sail across the Atlantic. Now on Patreon. Im pleased to announce we are now on Patreon. Please checkout our page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Thank you for watching this episode of Adventures of an old Seadog, I hope you enjoyed it. A great deal of work and love goes into every video in the series. Please give us a thumbs up. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news that you are welcome to share with your friends. All of the ‘Seadog’ videos are available to watch on the ‘Barry Perrins’ channel on Youtube. For notifications on new releases please subscribe. Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Disclaimers and copyrights : All video content on this channel/page is copyright and must not be used without permission. How to generate power on board is a question we are asked a lot, by people who are new to sailing or are considering a life on the water. So we decided to make a video. Ta-dah! Here it is, complete with my ageing frame on the foredeck as thumbnail clickbait! Who needs bikini clad strumpets when a middle aged Londoner is about eh??? First a little disclaimer. This " nuts and bolts " video is not aimed at those with a huge working knowledge of physics or electronics. Similarly, sailors who are on their 9th circumnavigation in a 22ft wooden ketch and don't know why anyone would "need a fridge", may find this a little tedious. There is no mention of V=IR or P=IV anywhere ( I considered it, and then realised that I didn't want to lose subscribers by boring the arse out of them. It is a broad strokes discussion about how we create and manage energy on our boat, which I hope you find useful. Also, please do your own research on anything I have said before you make a decision. These are are informed opinions from research on the interweb and from years of experience. However that doesn't mean i'm right. So use this as a starting point to carry on exploring the subject. Thanks so much for watching! Please subscribe, leave a comment and give a thumbs up. We get less than1% of viewers giving a thumbs up! What's that about eh? Just click the button, it can't be that hard. I don't even mind if you want to click the thumbs down ( actually I do, but its better than indifference ). Anyway the point is, we do really appreciate the comments and the clicks. Plus its good for our channel. The mighty wizards at youtube monitor all the clicks and likes and feed the information into a big machine. This machine will determine whether our channel grows or whether we end up living in a horse box in kent! So go on, click away, i'm allergic to horse hair!!! We have now joined the ranks of sailors with the ability to shoot beautiful aerial views! Deviating from the usual course once again, the drone we chose to purchase is the DJI Mavic Pro instead of the very popular Phantom 4. The Mavic Pro, when it is folded down it can just about fit in the size of your palm, meaning we'll never have to second guess if we want to bring it out with us as we explore each location we sail to. So far we've been having fun playing with it at the marina, steering through the maze of the channel and floating over all the boats in storage. We have a long way to go before finessing a fluid movement with the camera, but so far it has been a great addition to our camera gear. In this episode I go over the new awning I just made for our cockpit, a simple design with no framing to adhere to. Also, while putting our headsails in place, we realize our staysail doesn't have a good fit and we take measurements for hunting down a good used one to replace it. Cheers from the WATER!! The Volvo Ocean Race fleet went head to head for the first time on Wednesday 2 August in the Leg Zero Around the Island Race – a 50nm spring around the Isle of Wight. WIth 40+ knot gusts and huge waves, it was more like the Southern Ocean than the Solent – and the resulting footage is epic!

Now offering sailing charters in Tampa Bay! Go to: https://sailingsatori.life/charters ▶ Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/sailingsatori In this episode, we pick up where we left off in our last video. We make our way down to the Dry Tortugas in a 2 day trip. We stopped in Cabbage Key, FL to rest up before our 24 hour sail to Fort Jefferson. Along the way, I got seasick. I'm usually okay in rough seas, however I happened to have a bad sinus infection a few days prior and had to take a round of antibiotics. This makes me nauseous to begin with so that is probably the reason the conditions affected me this time. Good news, it didn't last that long! After anchoring in Cabbage Key, we took the dinghy to the "dollar bar" and had the chef prepare our fresh catch. It was delicious! The next day, we had a great time on our sail to the Dry Tortugas. Dolphins interrupted our ice cream treat, but we didn't mind! They hung with us a good 10 minutes. What an amazing site to see them in their natural habitat! As the night approaches, we prepare a fantastic dinner and settle into the night. Nick and I took 3 hour shifts on the night watch. While I was on my last watch, a few dozen shrimp boats were all over the place. The radar alarm was going off every minute. I noticed a boat that looked like it was headed straight for us. I woke Nick up and he confirmed they were too close for comfort. It was a close call... As we approach our destination, we become worried about our friends. They were sailing on a different course but we should have been able to get in contact by that point. We must have called them 20 times. Nothing...Stay tuned to see what happens! We got stuck in a storm at anchor! In this episode we complete our boat work and sail to the Isles of Scilly. We also endure a storm at anchor and call a Mayday Relay for another yacht, which was blown onto the rocks. Sorry for the lack of footage - we were busy keeping our boat safe and talking to the coastguard. We thought it was important, however, to share what we learned from this experience. Thanks for watching our sailing vlog; we hope you enjoyed it. We tried to keep it short and sweet, but if you’d like to know more about what happened in the Isles of Scilly, you can read our full account in this blog post: http://sailingkittiwake.com/sailing-isles-scilly-baptism-fire/.
