In this episode of Average Tech Fan, we cover two of the smaller and cheaper Powered Gimbals. A powered gimbal will help stabilize your footage if you plan to be filming while moving. Let's face it, if you are a Vlogger, all you seem to do is Run and Gun and film on the Go all the time, so a good Gimbal is a must. Otherwise your footage will look like crap as it will be all bouncy and jittery and no one want's to feel motion sickness while watching your channel. In this episode we cover the Osmo Mobile 2, which is designed to help stabilize the footage you get from a cell phone camera and the Zhiyun Crane-M which is designed to stabile smaller cameras. Although I do have a smaller Vlog Camera, the Canon G7X Mark 2, I have been able to use my full sized mirrorless camera, the Panasonic GH4, on the Crane-M. In this episode Janice and I take the two gimbals our for a walk in the forest and show the difference between the footage on the 2 gimbals and without. The difference is night and day. My favourite and best Camera setup is the Panasonic GH5 with the Metabones Speed Booster and the Sigma 18-35mm Lens with a Azden SMX30 shotgun Microphone. Just the Body alone of the GH5 is too bight for the Crane-M so clearly I needed a bigger Gimbal for that setup. So, I just bought and received the Zhiyun Crane 2 which can handle huge cameras setups up to 7lbs. That Beast will be covered in a future episode very soon, but, it is far larger than what most people who just are starting out or who only plan to Vlog will need and most can certainly have their needs met with these 2 smaller and cheaper gimbals. Every summer as Kirk was growing up, his family would visit Charlevoix, a quaint vacation town located on a skinny isthmus between Round Lake and Lake Michigan. Round Lake was a boating mecca; all sorts of craft paraded across its waters, waiting for the fuel dock, or a city marina slip, heading to and from the private residential docks, or passing through en route to Lake Charlevoix or Lake Michigan. As a kid walking the marina docks, Kirk would wonder about the lives of the boat owners. What do they do? Where are they coming from, where are they going to? The idea that a boat could leave Round Lake for Lake Michigan, and then travel anywhere in the world was exhilarating. Kirk dreamed one day he would sail his own boat to Charlevoix. In this episode we spend our first night ever at anchor, at South Manitou Island. the winds are higher than we would’ve liked, and we worry about the anchor dragging. Kirk endures a mostly sleepless night, because he worries more than me. From South Manitou we sail to Leland, where we meet up again with Kirk’s dad. The three of us explore Fishtown, a cluster of old fishing shanties — a window into Michigan’s commercial fishing history. And then… Kirk achieves his childhood dream. We depart Leland, hug the Leelenau Peninsula, pass Grand Traverse Bay, and join a line of boats in the Round Lake Channel. We pass through the drawbridge, and find ourselves in bustling Round Lake, among classic wooden boats, harbor boats, cabin cruisers, trawlers, pontoons. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

We motor our Endeavour 32 from St. Petersburg to Port Charlotte to be hauled out at Charlotte Harbor Boat Storage and trucked over to J & R Marine. This trip was a little risky because we had to go offshore in a boat that doesn't have portlights, grab rails, deck hardware, or sails rigged. We prepared by making sure we had an active Boat US and EPirb membership should anything happen along the way. We also made sure to have a good weather window. The trip went great. One thing I wanted to mention that isn't in the video is that we added a hazard to the location in Active Captain where we hit the object in the canal on the way to Charlotte Harbor Boar Storage. Ulko-Tammio is a Finnish island in Gulf of Finland very close to Russian border. It is protected as a part of a Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park but has also an interesting history. Ulko Tammio has been an important military and navy station for many years. You can still see an old cannon on the hill and a tunnel ( shelter against the bombers) built in a huge rock. If you are somewhere nearby you should visit Ulko Tammio :-)
