A Young boy is attacked by a Morey Eel and we are the closest thing to first aid in this remote community https://www.sailingnandji.com In this Episode of Sailing Nandji, imagine living in a lagoon in the middle of the ocean. No wifi, no cars, no shops, no hospital and the one land line phone to the outside world is 15nm away on a neighbouring island. Welcome to the Ninigo islands of PApua New Guinea. This is where we anchored Nandji for a week and spent our time with the local community. A young boy had been bitten by a Morey Eel and with no doctor or nurses and very limited medical supplies on the island, we are the closest thing to first aid. We try our best at cleaning the boys wound and trying to put the brave young lads hand back together. We visit the local garden where the family grow all their food and head out spearfishing with one of the lads from the island. We are inundated with gifts of fruit and vegetables and have lunches cooked and brought out to the boat. We have supplies and balls for the kids at the school and take a visit to the community school. Escaping at the end of the week for one quite evening on a remote beach, Marley has some fun and then it is off to sea we go! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We just arrived to Indonesia after cruising the Pacific islands. We departed Australia 12 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of no where, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! What an adventure! This is (hopefully) our longest sail ever! 21 days without seing the shore and many nautical miles away from it. Distance covered: 3,520 Nautical Miles or 4,050 miles or 6,519 kilometers with some squalls and some wave height of 3+ meters… Sail changes countless times some not scary and some a bit frightening squalls with max wind strength of 36 knots or so. Only few boats encountered during all this time. We stacked a lot of food and shared what we provisioned but we also caught a Mahi Mahi, that was so good! Some a bit scary and lots of rewarding and pure magic like night shifts and the stars at night. It's incredible out here without any interference of other lights. We were lucky to capture some of it on video. What seemed so crazy and incredible in the beginning that last hour was indescribable joy and gratitude for this experience. Join us and Subscribe! We are in a marina where we are not the typical demographic. This doesn't deter us and actually we make some awesome friends that otherwise we would have never met. We operate on a strict sailors schedule, maybe plan something or just see where the winds blows us. Also, vlogging really makes us late to everything. Today's episode depicts a day where we had no plans, until our friends in the marina called us up. They stated it was a perfect day, and asked us if we'd like to go for an airplane ride. Of course!!! Melissa had never been on a private plane OR been to Naples, Florida. So we hopped on our friends Centurion plane, and away we went. We got to trace our boat delivery steps from the sky which was so amazing it left me speechless. Or maybe because I (Melissa) was a little self conscious about talking in the headset. We landed at the Naples airport, got a car and took a tour of all the beautiful and massive homes in Naples. A quick bite to try THE BEST ribs in the country and back home we flew. Plastic Pollution is the buildup of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, humans and their habitats. Lefkas (Lefkada) is an amazing island on the west coast of Greece. We lived here on our boat surrounded by wetlands and salt flats. Without a car we walked and cycled everywhere and discovered the huge amount of wildlife that lives here such as swans, flamingos, egrets, ducks as well as turtles, butterflies and amphibians. Sadly, we also found a lot of rubbish including plastic bottles, bags and even fly tipping sites which were polluting this special environment. People were actually driving into the wetlands and offloading their rubbish rather than taking it to the dump. In the marina some liveaboards organised their own recycling scheme - cans and plastic bottles were being collected in the community room then taken on fold up bikes to a recycling project every week. This project is called LefkoGaia - a recycle co-operative project overseen by Thomas who recycles everything form electrics, metals and cooking oil to plastic, card and glass. The project struggles by on donations and by reselling recyclable materials. Used boat and car batteries are particularly welcome because of their high value lead content. Some liveaoards - such as Andrew Waterman - even volunteer their time to help sort and package the recyclable materials. The project has only one old van which is used to pick up large white goods such as televisions and refrigerators. They also get by on only two lights until they can fund their own electric supply. We joined a beach cleanup organised by some liveaboards - at a local turtle beach near Lefkas - and although the problem of ocean plastic pollution seems overwhelming at times, we met many people who are determined to make a change. Organising local beach cleanups or just picking up three pieces of plastic every time you're out for a walk can make a difference and inspire others. We've sailed away from Greece now but hopefully left the it slightly better than when we found it. On our travels we've modified the old aphorism of, "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos" to, "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos.. and a few bits of plastic!" I used to love 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' by Shel Silverstein when I was a child for all its wonder and absurdity and pure fun. And what a question...what lies beyond the end of the sidewalk, or road, or horizon. What lies beyond? I suppose I can answer that with one word. Svalbard. This land is unlike anything that we have encountered on our travels, both for it's untamed spirit and its fragility. It is a challenging place on the top of the world that demands much, but also rewards greatly. A punishing day at sea, with winds that whip your breath away with a gasp, is rewarded later with the most spectacular glacier that seems to change colour before your eyes. This is a slice of some of the places we've seen thus far on our journey into the arctic and we hope you enjoy! We've just made it from the Bahamas to St. Barth's, and we're ready to enjoy ourselves! We've been placed on an island with perfect beaches, perfect waters, and breathtaking views. After stumbling around town our first morning, still suffering from sleep deprivation, we instantly fall in love with St. Barth's and its main harbour of Gustavia. There are beaches full of shells, brilliant turquoise waters, and panoramic views from up on the hillsides. Being such a popular harbour, we were pushed to the back where we ended up anchored on a bed of rocks, but luckily the forecast was for very light winds and we were not worried about dragging. In this episode, Chris sails the boat to Tonga with an international crew of five swabbies! We have a great sail as far as offshore passages go. The wind even works out for us to have a two day stop over in complete calm at Minerva Reef. We get the biggest Yellow Tail Tuna I've ever seen on the line and I spear the biggest fish I've ever caught on a spear. To top it all off a massive fourteen foot Tigershark paid us an afternoon visit and decided to do a taste test of our prop! Passage making is not always this fun, but when it's good it's really good! :) The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born. Ports, portholes, portlights, windows, whatever you want to call them... our boat has TEN of them. For a 32 foot boat, that's a lot of ports! Subsequently, it's a big job to replace them all and this is our vlog of the process. We're super happy with the way they're coming out and can't wait for the new ones to patina and match the old ones. You can't beat the "shippy" look of bronze, or the durability in a marine environment.
