Light winds and a shifty breeze presented competitors with tricky conditions on the water. Luckily there was sunshine, music, friends and cold drinks on shore for their return! Highlights from the first day on the water.

After a grey start, Day 3 ended up being a glamorous day on the water. The RS Aeros enjoyed champagne sailing out in the bay, a steady force four with rolling waves and sunshine. The RS Teras were battling it out in the harbour in breezy and choppy conditions. Happy hour was taken full advantage followed by the RS Tera Swedish party and the RS Aero pizza night!

The Volvo Ocean Race returned to historic Newport, R.I. in the Spring of 2018 for the lone North American Stopover of the 2017-2018 round-the-globe sailing race. US Sailing was honored to have a unique opportunity to participate in this exhilarating event and the festivities and educational activities involved on site. The US Sailing Reach Initiative, a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) educational program to inspire sailing programs and schools to utilize sailing as a teaching platform, was one of the exhibitions at the One Ocean Exploration Zone. As part of the US Sailing Reach STEMcation program and through the support of both US Sailing donors and Endeavour Community Sailing, two US Sailing Reach Initiative students from the Kauai Sailing Association, two students from Endeavour Community Sailing, and two students from the Community Boating Center of New Bedford were selected to participate at the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover for a four-day STEM/sailing experience of a lifetime.

From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I've settled for a while on La Palma island. Comfortably moored at Marina Tazacorte. Since I'm alone again, I get some work done on Galopin. I also play. I go to a alternative festival and visit Tazacorte. Then my new Latin friends and I go out to sea. The views are sweet. Gorgeous girls all aboard. I'd heard La Palma is the most Latino of the islands, and this episode does give some truth to what is said. I already love the latin style, and I'm still an ocean away.
