We took possession of our new (to us) Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer in at the beginning of March, 2019 and it has been a busy month getting ready to leave the docks for the first leg of our transit from Florida to Mexico. We had plans to leave the dock April 2 or the first weather window after that and almost made that date, if Dougal hadn’t realized that his passport expired in May at the last minute. Panama was our intended first stop and the country requires a passport valid for 6 months after entry. Our canal agent said that he would have likely been asked to leave or deported so we had to expedite a passport renewal. Luckily, we were able to get one (for $$$) by the morning of April 3 and left the docks for Panama that morning. In this episode we show some of the long list of chores that we had to get the boat ready to leave for Panama including: * Replacing CQR anchor with Ultra UA60 * Fueling the boat * Sail Repair/Prep * Cleaning rust and painting main engine air intake * Repairing and reinstalling dinghy lift winch * Replace washing machine drain pump * Replace having port on transom * Provisioning We did get the boat all ready to leave and after arrival of Dougal’s new passport on April 3, we left the docks and got underway for passage to Panama. We all appreciate your comments and try to respond to as many as possible. Please continue to post comments and questions and if you like the insight into cruising and boating in general that we try to provide, please subscribe to our channel! Erdmann Rauer (CEO, LSG Group) and Francesco Del Porto (Chief Customer Officer, Barilla Group) signed a supply and cooperation agreement at the World Travel Catering Expo (WTCE), which will gradually extend the collaboration between their two companies through the year 2023. This long-term partnership will focus on Barilla pasta ready meals that will be sold exclusively through Evertaste, the LSG Group’s expert brand for packaged products. With the oven now fixed, Magnus experiments with a new bread making recipe and technique for making bread. It’s very successful! We see the largest pod of dolphins that we have ever seen. There must have been over 100 in the pod! We observe the local fishing techniques with the use of pangas, spinning and drumming! The alternator gets its new brushes fitted, but the bearings will have to wait until another day. Thanks for watching and following along with our adventure. I know, I know, we promised an episode a week and failed after only a few weeks! This was not Hayley’s fault tho. She’s had an issue with trying to export the finished episode from iMovie and it turns out there was 1 dodgy frame somewhere that was making it fail. It took us forever to find it! This editing business is NOT easy! Hats off to those who manage it every week but we’ll continue to keep trying. This week we continue exploring the BVI and luckily Ben from AquaFrolic has just done his diving qualification so I've someone to go play underwater with. The RMS Rhone was a British mail ship that was sunk by a hurricane in 1867 and is possibly the most famous dive wreck in ythe BVI so I really wanted to dive it. Luckily, Benny was pretty keen for me to take him on his first dive after getting his ticket so I had a buddy. We sailed the 2 cats up to Salt Island and picked up a free mooring ball right on top of the wreck in Lee Bay. These days I get all my enjoyment in the water from seeing others enjoy themselves so I loved this dive with Ben's eyes as big as dinner plates. From Salt Island we sail to Jost Van Dyke Island and found ourselves a lovely anchorage in behind 2 reefs in White Bay. This is a major party spot with lots of day tourists from the other BVI and USVI drinking in the well renouned Soggy Dollar Bar or even Foxy's next door. We've spent most of our Caribbean adventure (and indeed our Atlantic crossing) with the crew of AquaFrolic so it was a sad goodbye but it's time for us to move onto the next place. Our plan was to head to the USVI which being American means we can book our interview with the USA immigration to get a visa for when we finally arrive by boat in Miami. As usual though, Hurricane Irma had a different plan for us and had destroyed the customs office. Turks and Caicos here we come! We turn to the northeast from Boca Grande Key, back toward Marathon, after which we will continue on to Miami. The onslaught of cold fronts ushering in strong northerly winds is making life difficult, resulting in some brisk sailing and forcing me to move my anchor several times to find shelter around Marathon Key. Finally a stretch of tranquil weather allows me to get some practice in with my Phantom 3 drone. WEBSITE: https://www.boothbyboats.com TIP JAR: https://www.paypal.me/KevinBoothby

Recently had a little trouble getting someone to clean bottom of our catamaran at a reasonable price, so guess what. DIY. Stephen and I did a bit one beautiful morning with just a mask, snorkel and holding our breath. We tied ourselves on with suction handles and rope and tried desperately to not swallow the water filled with sea creatures, algae and who knows what! Then, for the serious cleaning, we got out our Brownie air compressor and Stephen and our friend/ship engineer Bill (we hope he's still our friend after this), finished the job. Should add a couple of knots to our speed! Hard work, but so worth it. THANKS BILL! On our way to take classes with the American Sailing Association, we take a road trip to Northern Minnesota stopping in Duluth to explore and have some fun before we learn to sail offshore on Lake Superior. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching how to learn to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Well, it's finally time to say goodbye to Victoria. We got her knowing she was going to be a parts boat but was still the first boat we ever owned. Feels a little bitter-sweet. On the other hand, she has given us so much! Not only her hardware but also a sense of excitement having her in the yard as we build. Encouragement as we sat in her late at night after a long day of work. Introductions to so many people, including one of her former owners. And of course, teaching us so much about how boats are put together. In this episode, we take most of her hull apart so that we can then continue on to salvaging her planking and her centerline timbers. Both of which will hopefully be reused (what parts are not rotten) to become our dinghy. Thank you old girl! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. Are you guys ready for a RAN-athon?! We have 2 more videos coming up in the next two days so stay tuned! Over 3 years of full time cruising and a lot of motoring up in Alaska and BC has taken it’s toll on Ran’s engine. We also got a blow-by on one of the injectors in Panama 2017 so there are a few things to deal with. Johan will act as a heart surgeon and tackle the big and scary job of giving Ran’s iron heart a big overhaul! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. In Search of the Bluest Waters in the Bahamas 57 | Beau and Brandy Sailing Goodbye Eluethera! Hello Exumas! We finally head south to explore the beautiful blue waters of the Exumas. We've heard so many good things about the Exumas but first we have to get there. We sail to Cape Eluethera the night before our jump across the Exuma Sound to Norman's Cay. The winds were lighter than expected so the sail was very slow and took a lot longer than expected. It was so calm that Brandy baked some keto style banana bread. We anchored just as the sun was setting and the moon was rising. We rose early the next morning in order to get through Wax Cay Cut during slack tide. We were going so fast that we arrived a few hours early. So we decided to practice our heave to procedures. Then we sailed through the washing machine like cut into the most beautiful, bluest waters in the bahamas. With a constant water leak sinking our boat, we install a NEW stern tube and fix the problem! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive back to Langkawi with a boat full of NEW gear to install onto Nandji. Upon our return to the boatyard, we had a special delivery from Australia, our NEW Stern tube! We had been waiting on this to arrive for weeks as we need to install the stern tube, to then install the shaft so we can align and position the new engine correctly. We have had a trickle of water though the hull on the outside of the stern tube since we burnt out a bearing on our journey to the boatyard and created a hole in the old stern tube. We take you through the installation process of the new Stern tube and solve our water leak for good! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. Currently on the hard stand, we are re-powering and completing a major refit! We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades! Indian Ocean here we come!! This special episode narrated by Kona shows our adventure from a dog's perspective. We have a couple of first timers as crew and cross from the mainland to Baja after exploring some of the surfing towns in the Puerto Vallarta area. We try to get our ducks in a row in preparation for the South Pacific crossing, but unfortunately, have to cancel doing it this season.
Sailing to Dutch St. Eustatius. Diving the reef. Getting Nitrox trained. Climbing into the pre-historic volcanic crater wilderness. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) has a wonderful sail from our favorite island of Nevis to Dutch run island of St. Eustatius (Stay-sha). Sailing down the lee side of St.Kitts we see the island in its full splendor for once, with no cloud covering its majestic volcanos. Approaching Eustatius we see its volcano, The Quill, along with the famous “white wall” on the NE side. We anchor in Oranje Bay next to Oranjestad town which still has a lot of quaint colonial Dutch architecture. The lower town, once a bustling and thriving wharf was decimated by the English in retaliation to the island giving the first American ship a gun-salute in 1776. You can still see the remains of the stone wharfs, and some warehouses are nicely restored. We have 2 dives in the National Marine Park and take our Nitrox exam with the ScubAqua dive school, run by a very pleasant Dutch gang. One of the days we climb The Quill and into the crater, which is like a lost world, untouched by Europeans. You could be in a Jurassic park film set. We were overall very charmed with this little island, its cute town and warm people. But forecast meant we had to move onto St. Barths before we were really ready. 18-21 January 2019
Experiencing engine failure twice and coming face to face with a wild Dingo on Fraser Island. The life of a cruising sailor can be very varied, having to fix an engine issue in the middle of a massive thunder and lightning storm is not our favourite occupation, and coming face to face with a Dingo after being told that they have attacked humans here was a little scary. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with and lows of travelling around the world by boat. This week, curtesy of Bruce and Sarah from SV Catabatic, we are invited to join in their annual fun, building small boats from natural materials found on Urupukapuka Island. To give everyone else a chance we arrive fashionably late and only had 15 minutes to throw together our vessels. They floated, but realistically don’t pose a threat to any of the other competitors. (The boat that leaves all the others in its wake just happens to be Bruce’s). We also take a whistle stop look at the beautiful historic town Russell, New Zealand’s first European settlement.
