Season 4 | Episode 71 | An Empty Isthmus Cove and Hiking Goat Whiskers Trail. On this episode we awake to a New Year! 2019! After riding out the blow that came in the middle of the night we made our way ashore in the lingering winds and walked over to Isthmus Cove. It was quite a sight to see Isthmus Cove all but completely empty. The only boats that were allowed to stay were the Lifeguard Boat and two shore boats. They even towed the dingy dock well far out and tired it off to moorings. My friend Noah told me this seemingly excessive precaution was a direct result of a storm that hit the island on December 31st, 2014, exactly 5 years from when this video was filmed. During that 2014 storm boats were blown ashore on the rocks and two people were killed, one of which was a harbor master. Since then when a gale is forecasted to hit the islands the Lee harbors are cleared out as a safety measure for sailors and Harbor Masters a like. We made our way up the hill and ran into two of our friends from Instagram, Adam and Kat. We had been in touch with them and said hi was we motored past their Cape Dory on our way in the day before and had planned on meeting up at some point. It was nice to bump into them on the trail and we all hiked the rest of the day together. Making our way up Goat Whiskers Trail we eventually found ourselves on a brilliant vista point giving us an amazing view of the island and of the isthmus. before heading back down and back to the boat for a very long nap. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Eu estava achando estranho o fato de todas as amigas velejadoras estarem tocadas pelo momento da partida, umas mais ansiosas, outras mais sensíveis enquanto que eu estava passando batida por essa sensação, provavelmente protegida pela minha lista enorme de afazeres até o dia D. Na semana da nossa partida todos os cantos do Bracuhy pareciam ter um quê de melancolia, uma angústia fina que estava lá, se fazendo presente em cada coqueiro e em cada encontro com os amigos. Aproveitamos ao máximo todas as oportunidades de encontro e reunião com essa outra família que estávamos prestes a nos desapegar. Bel, Dani, Martha, Gigi, Drica, Ana, Ricardinho, Alê, Diogo, Reinaldo, Verônica, Ricardo... e os recém chegados Felipe, Rafa, Aline, Pat e André. Muitos ficariam no pier ao passo que nós seguiríamos viagem e de algum jeito isso dói de uma maneira difícil de explicar. Tirar os cabos do pier foi algo inexplicável. É quando bate aquele gelo no coração que te faz pensar "opa! agora não tenho mais casa!". Soltamos mesmo. Mas estava no plano e tem muita água para passar por debaixo dessa quilha! We wintered in Almerimar marina on the Costa del Sol. Although Almerimar is probably more famous for it's miles of greenhouses and Golf Resort, we explored further afield and went walking in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Alcazaba of Almeria. In this episode we find ourselves All ALONE in a famous grotto in the Bahamas. Before we get head south to Staniel Cay, Exuma, Bahamas, we decided to break out the pole spear and do a some fishing. Brandy snorkeled around while I went on the hunt for grouper. It had been a while since we caught any fish and I have never caught a grouper until now! It was a big'en too. It took me a few tries but I finally got him out of his hiding spot. Now that the freezer is full of grouper and the wind has picked up, we pull anchor, raise the sails and get headed south to Staniel. Since we only have the 100% jib out we put a reef in the mainsail. Our reefing system is outdated but gets the job done. We plan to get slab or jiffy reefing soon but for now we'll stick with the roller boom furling. We have an amazing, fast sail. Once anchored, we headed into town to get some free wifi and provision a few veggies and essentials, including some of the famous Loraine's Mom's coconut bread. The next day we go explore the Thunderball Grotto. Thankfully we had the place to ourselves since the current was too strong for most tourist to visit. The Thunderball Grotto is SOOOO BEAUTIFUL! After happy days in Lakka on Paxos we headed to Corfu. Next to the Old Fortress we moored in Poo Harbour, Corfu Old Port. We settled in doing our first med mooring and will spend a few days in Corfu, since it's Corfu, and we need to wind down, this med moor was so stressful. After being charged triple of what we expected at the Grand Harbour Marina, we moved to the Royal Malta Yacht Club to a temporary pontoon for less than half the cost! We were nervous doing our first mediterranean mooring so our good friends Sonke and Sarah helped us move onto this pontoon of death! (Jokes, it's still being built haha!) This week we share our Mindelo experience. It is a very good marina with very good services. It has repair services, floating bar, clean ablutions, fuel dock and walking distance from all the shops and markets in the small town of Mindelo. The downside? It is very windy (although the fetch is small) and the Saharah dust is getting into everything...sails, lines, blocks, boat, clothes, .... everything.
