In this episode its all about ancient caves - we head around the north west coast of Menorca to Cala Morell where we kayak into some incredible caves with unusual looking stones in the rock. It turns out the caves used to be an ancient sea bed going back millions of years! Then we head into the small town and 5 minutes up the road we enter the Necròpolis de Son Morell. These date back to between 3000 and 4000 BC and were grave sites for the ancient people of Menorca. We are amazed and very pleased that there is no tourist office or payment required and you can freely explore these ruins alone and at your own pace. They are really quite thought provoking and it's amazing that such carving was done and can still be observed today! After this we decide we are going to head to Sardinia but some dodgy wind and extremely slow speed make us reconsider! Remember you can follow our journey on Sailing Chelsea YouTube channel, Facebook and Instagram, or visit our website for up to date details on where we are in the world, blog articles and more. If planning on sailing through the Capricorn Coast in Queensland you need to keep a regular eye out on the web site "Notice to Mariners" to find out where closures are for live ammunition training. These are carried out regularly through winter and it can mean sitting around in a marina or at anchorage for up to 2 weeks until training is completed or going an alternative route. Link below to web site for more information on closure dates and locations. https://publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/capricorn-coast-outside-pilotage-areas-notices-to-mariners What camera gear do we use? The island of Raiatea is known as the birthplace of Polynesia, it is from here that canoes went out in the mythical Octopus shape, its legs reaching as far south as New Zealand and as far north as Hawaii, east to the Gambiers and Easter islands and west to the Cooks and Tonga. The peoples of all these places share a similar culture and language and as New Zealanders' it was fascinating to be able to visit the sacred site of Taputapuatea where the first 7 canoes of our Maori people originated from. We also enjoyed our jungle river adventure where we got to try local fruits we had never heard of before and came back laden with produce, the people here are so generous with their time and local knowledge. The coral gardens of adjoining island, Tahaa, was another highlight, buzzing with life, we saw fish we had never encountered before and lots of live coral. We now know why the ancient peoples of Polynesia flourished here in this verdant landscape on both sea and land! Join us as we adventure around the world on our yacht, Nikau. We are a family from New Zealand who wanted to take a break from normal life before our kids got too old and left home! We have 5 in our family plus our cat (Sugar) and our dog (Coco). Our three kids are Naomi (16), Bella (14) and David (12), they are completing NZ correspondence school while we travel from Europe back to NZ over a few years, some of our favourite activities are scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, and discovering local sights, food and history in all the places we visit. We hope you enjoy the journey too!

We leave Fakarava and start the supposedly, two day sail to Tahiti, 250 nautical miles away. It ends up being a slow trip and we finally get there about 5 days later! Magnus cooks up a storm in the galley. We enter through a pretty scary pass with massive waves on either side of us and a huge swell going in! We check out the local Carre Four and enjoy a true blue Aussie bbq burger for dinner. Karl needs a new autopilot, so I decided to fly up to California to pick up my new pelagic autopilot in person because it was about the same price as shipping it and most likely easier than dealing with customs. During my stay, I stayed with my friend Manny because he needed a nanny for his kids. On his days off, we went exploring the beautiful state California a bit. Some great fun in the snow! On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we continue to tackle our never-ending list of sailboat projects and that’s when the reality starts to set in that getting the boat ready for cruising life is more work than we realized. In need of a break, we check out the Ten Thousand Islands area in Florida and explore an uninhabited island for the day! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! Want to see how a modern city looks after being buried in a pyroclastic flow? After randomly drawing our Patreon crew contest winners Martin and Crystal, Delos sets sail leaving Antigua in our wake. After a few hours of fantastic downwind sailing we anchor ourselves in the protection of the island and begin our exploration. It turns out the entire south portion of the island is an off-limits exclusion zone to protect the population from the very active volcano. We get a permit from the government to enter the exclusion zone, and along with our local guide Joe enter the abandoned villages and towns that used to be homes to thousands of people. What we find is absolutely amazing and creeps at the same time. It's literally a modern ghost town buried in volcanic ash, rocks, and mud. We fly the drone and get as close as possible to capture the experience from both the air and ground. We leave the charming town of Galaxidi, Greece on our way south and east, headed for the Aegean Sea. Along the way we get treated to the most amazing dolphin show we've ever seen, either in-person or on video. Next comes the Corinth Canal, which turns out to be a second treat. Such a narrow passage under blue skies and equally blue water. Things get finished off in the port town of Aegia, where we meet up with some real YouTube stars (not pikers like us).

One of the great parts of boatbuilding (or maybe the hardest part about learning boatbuilding?!) is that there are many different ways to do things. And they are all correct! Steaming in Arabella's frames is a good example of this. All her framing so far has been steamed in after we have cut pockets in the centerline to hold the butt ends of the frames. At this point in the planking process, we have come up to a point in the bow that had a wide section missing a pair of frames due to the mast step being in the way. We needed something to attach the planking to and keep it from rising up, so the only logical thing to do was to steam in the frames that belonged there. The process of steaming these frames, is exactly the same as all the rest except for the fact that they do not get pocketed into the centerline. These frames have their butt ends shaped to fit between the planking and the centerline. They are then screwed in through the planking and into the centerline to be held in place as we bend them to shape. Since we only had two of these to do, we didn't want to light up the giant steam box we have. This would be a waste of wood and time to get all that water up to a boil for just two frames. So, we built a small steam box out of a length of PVC pipe. Our setup wasn't ideal... but you live and you learn! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. In this episode Oskar shows a little about our HF-radio and how we download weather forecasts. While we were swimming in the middle of the ocean a oceanic whitetip shark came and said hello. We reached Tuvalu but we did not stay very long… We really wanted to explore the beautiful atolls and islands, but we explain why we couldn’t in the episode. The famous Mentawai island waves deliver and the boys get some SICK ONES! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we sail north to the Mentawai playgrounds area and score some of the best waves going around! We leave the wave of Telescopes and down wind sail the 20nm in the strong SE trade winds. We have a little excitement on the ride as there is some swell in the water and BIG bill fish around!!! We arrive to the protection of the little tropical island of Hideaways and discover a smoking left hander to surf out the front. We anchor on the shoulder and call this piece of paradise home for a few days. The surf got a little busy in the mornings with sometimes 40 people in the water, but as we sat there patiently, let the tide drain out and the boats to disappear, the lads get an all time surf session with just the two of them out. Yew! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf before our big crossing! We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! When John Ordovas contacted me with some drawings of a 64' Trimaran I was intrigued. When he told me that he had assembled a small group of workers, found a production facility in Alicante, and started to BUILD the yacht my intrigue turned to an overwhelming curiosity. This is a really unique opportunity to follow the construction of a challenging yacht and also to see the development of a new brand in the yachting industry. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. I leave Margarida early morning and head out for a spear. The trouble is, the sun is not high and it is a bit overcast so I can't see into the water and see the reefs. I stumble upon a reef when a set comes in and my motor dies right at the worst possible time and I get swamped by a breaking wave and almost have the boat turn turtle. Its all good though and I manage to get dinner for a BBQ. I see some amazing coral formations that look like Disneyland for smurfs. Just watch it and you will understand. Later on we meet some Brazilian guys who challenge us to a game of volleyball and we trounce them 3 games to 0. Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode! DINGHIES, FULL MOON, SUNSET DRINKS and a FULL AIR CONDITIONER REFIT!! This episode has both sides of the coin - WORK and PLAY! We kick things off by taking part in the monthly DINGHY DRIFT at Brunswick Landing Marina - which involves a bunch of cruising and liveaboard sailors doing just that - drifting on dinghies while rafted up in a big pile - with of course some Painkillers and other beverages thrown in. :-) . It's a great way to share comraderie, catch a beautiful sunset, and watch the full moon come out! But then we're back in the trenches. Time to install our brand new air conditioner...who knew it would involve a hack saw?! Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! Cheers!! We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love Carla and Simon

Welcome to Port Vila, Vanuatu! Vanuatu is truly the last frontier of the South Pacific and this week it did not disappoint. It took me literally a week to figure out how to get a decent internet connection and even then it's rarely good enough to Skype the Grandparents. This week we find a Superyacht on a reef and have a ton of fun at a DIY Wet and Wild Adventure park! I will be posting a video every other Monday at 10am (UTC +11 - Solomons and New Cal time) while we move through Vanuatu, the Solomons and PNG. (Internet Access Depending) This region is not the best for internet access but I'll do my best to stay regular!
