We left Smoo Cave and began one of the most dramatic drives of our Scotland adventure. The journey took us through incredible Highland landscapes, past the spectacular Kylesku Bridge, and eventually all the way to the Isle of Skye. Scotland certainly didn’t disappoint. We experienced wild winds, dramatic skies, huge mountain valleys, and even spotted two majestic stags early in the morning. Along the way we also saw an incredible double rainbow, and discovered a stunning waterfall near Loch Cluanie on the A87 road. Finally we crossed the iconic Skye Bridge and reached the Isle of Skye — a place we’ve always wanted to visit. This video is mostly a road trip through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Scottish Highlands. If you love: 🚐 Vanlife adventures 🏔️ Incredible scenery 📍 Scotland travel 🌈 Unexpected moments on the road then this journey is for you. 👉 In the next video we explore that amazing waterfall we discovered on the way!
Epic Navigator You can watch the original video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r_CXZfSccQ&t=187s Two sailing yachts attempted to leave a marina, but within seconds everything started to go wrong. In this analysis we break down the critical seamanship mistakes that led to the failed departure — and the lessons every skipper should learn from it. We break down the sequence of events, identify the critical mistakes, and explain how these situations should be managed by a competent skipper. Understanding wind influence, prop walk, communication between crews, and correct timing of manoeuvres is essential for safe boat handling in marinas. Situations like this happen more often than most sailors expect, and they highlight why practical training in harbour manoeuvres is one of the most important skills a skipper must develop. If you want to improve your marina manoeuvring skills and gain real operational confidence when handling a yacht in tight spaces, Epic Navigator provides practical training focused on real seamanship and decision-making.
While Brioni is recovering, I'm left to do all these boat projects on my own and even though it would be infinitely easier to take our main sail down with an extra pair of hands, I'm going to figure out a way to make it work. I need to take the sail off the boat to repair some damage we sustained on our passage from Tonga to New Zealand, and there are plenty of sailmakers nearby who can help me out if Brioni can't sew it herself. But there will be challenges while we're tied up inside a marina so hopefully the wind will cooperate. I can also move on to the job that I was excited about when I first started the ceiling repair, and at last we'll have our saloon back when I replace all the ceiling tiles. We are marching on through this refit and ticking off as many jobs as possible so that we can get back out sailing again as soon as possible. Brioni is doing her best to recover as well, but it's a slow journey. Most wooden boat spars aren’t straight tapers — they’re elliptical. And laying one out is way easier than you think. Here’s the simple method traditional boatbuilders use to shape masts, booms, and yards without complicated math. 🌐 nomadboatbuilding.com🛠 Support the builds: patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding #boatbuilding #woodenboat #sailboat #boatbuilder #woodworking #traditionalcraft #diyboat #maritime #sailinglife
Building a wooden sailboat mast, boom, or yard? Here’s how to lay out a proper elliptical spar taper — the traditional shape used on real wooden boats. In this video, Mark from Nomad Boat Building walks you step-by-step through the simple layout method used to create an elliptical taper on wooden spars. Whether your boat plans give you full dimensions or just major and minor diameters, this technique lets you accurately draw and cut a fair, traditional taper using basic tools and a scrap of wood. This is an essential skill for wooden boat builders working on masts, booms, and yards — and it’s much easier than it sounds. 🌐 Website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding 🛠 Support these builds on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding If these videos help you with your own boat project, consider supporting the channel on Patreon — it helps keep these traditional boatbuilding skills alive and more tutorials coming. ⏱ Chapters: 00:00 Who This Video Is For 00:12 What Is a Spar Taper? 00:27 Why Spars Have Elliptical Tapers 00:33 What Boat Plans May (or May Not) Include 01:23 When You Have to Figure It Out Yourself 01:49 Tools Needed for Layout 02:09 Establishing Reference Lines 02:42 Major vs Minor Diameter 03:02 The Concept of Stretching a Circle 03:21 Dividing the Circle into Equal Parts 04:20 Transferring Measurements to the Spar 05:26 Connecting the Dots for the Elliptical Curve 06:16 Using a Batten to Fair the Line 06:35 Important: One Face of a Spar Is Often Straight 07:27 Real Example from Boat Plans 07:52 Rounding the Spar (Teaser for 7-10-7 Rule) #boatbuilding #woodenboat #sailboatbuilding #traditionalboatbuilding #woodworking #marinemaking #diyboat #boatbuilder #sparmaking #mastbuilding

In this video, we walk through what to wear for your first time sailing using things you probably already have: quick-dry shirts/shorts, a simple waterproof shell, and the right footwear. We cover what fabrics to avoid (cotton and jeans), why you shouldn’t go barefoot on a boat, how to check if your shoes will grip (soft rubber soles), and glove options from proper sailing gloves to cheap grippy work gloves. We also talk about hats/sunglasses for sun protection and when you should wear a PFD (life jacket)—especially for dinghy sailing—plus how to fit it correctly so it stays on in the water.

After weeks exploring the remote wilderness of Svalbard, it is finally time to begin the long journey south. In this episode of Expedition Svalbard, we sail more than 550 nautical miles across the Barents Sea on our return passage from the High Arctic back to Tromsø in northern Norway. The voyage home is a careful balance of sailing and motoring as we work with changing Arctic weather conditions. Long watches, fuel calculations and shifting wind forecasts shape each decision on board as we guide our sailing yacht steadily south towards mainland Norway. At times the sea is glassy calm and we motor gently through the Arctic waters. At other moments the wind builds and we reef the sails as the boat surges forward at speed. Dolphins, whales and vast open horizons accompany us along the way as we leave the islands of Svalbard behind. While the miles pass beneath the keel, we reflect on the extraordinary places we experienced during the expedition — drifting icebergs, remote polar landscapes and rare wildlife such as walrus and polar bears. We also visited the unique communities that exist in this harsh environment, including Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and the historic research station of Ny-Ålesund. The return voyage is both demanding and reflective. After 33 days away, sailing back into the familiar waters of Tromsø marks the end of an unforgettable Arctic expedition. From navigating tidal gates to night watches under the midnight sun, this sailing documentary captures the reality of offshore sailing in the High Arctic and the powerful beauty of one of the most remote regions on Earth #Svalbard #ArcticSailing #SailingExpedition #BarentsSea #SailingAdventure ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 01:57 Fuel Concerns 08:43 Finally Some Wind and Dolphins 15:18 Motor Sailing Again 18:45 Summer Is Here! 21:01 Epilogue of an Epic Journey 23:28 Preview on Next Episode 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: In Our Hands by Ten Tower Odyssey by Christoffer Mo Ditlevsen On The Sky by Helmut Schenker A Place For Peace by Elm Lake Winds Of Change by William Claeson Radiant Colours by Out To The World 🔗 Links: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com https://www.barentswatch.no/en https://www.yr.no/en 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? Exercise, sewing, squirting, amplifier, bimini tent Jump on aboard and join us at Sailing Intermission. Karen is feeling better and back in the swing of things with jumping jacks, weights and dancing. She squirts the bimini as she and Steve get Isabella all wet and clean. We venture into the marina’s parking lot with a large piece of used sunbrella. Why? It’s an old deck cover that we’re going to cut down to a smaller size to make a tent that will protect the bimini and partially shade the deck and salon area below. Steve whips out the trusty 237 Singer Sewing machine circa 1957. That baby just sews through pretty much everything; especially after being tuned by a local sewing center. After several feet of stitches, a needle battle wound and some well placed grommets, we’ve got our bimini tent and are ready for the spring and summer sun load. Ya’ll know how we love dancing and music. The Kicker speakers in the salon sound good and yet there are times they don’t inspire us to cut a rug. Steve begins the process of fishing wires to install an additional amplifier. That DIY project is to be continued. We can’t wait to hear boosted tunes down below soon. We truly appreciate all who watch our journey through boat life. Subscribers, can’t tell you enough how much we love ya’ll and how much you keep us going. Today we explore one of the most unique places we've discovered while sailing in Thailand. We start the morning anchored off Bang Bao on Koh Kood, heading ashore in search of breakfast at a beautiful beachfront resort. Unfortunately… no luck. So we raise the sails and head around the island looking for our next adventure. What we find is incredible. On the far side of the island we discover a traditional Thai village built entirely over the water, stretching out along a long pier. Above the village sits a giant golden Buddha statue watching over the bay and protecting the fishermen and their families below. We climb the hill to visit the Buddha, explore the floating village, and enjoy some delicious (and incredibly cheap) local food while taking in the views. 📞📲

In this episode Mark will be laying out and cutting out the bow and stern transoms. Mark will be assembling frames, setting them up on the strong back and fairing the bottom frames to accept planking. Winter on the hard has to be the hardest thing for a sailboat. Months of sitting motionless and covered with snow and ice. Worse than that, is the effect it has on the sailor, who must endure the long cold nights. So, instead of sailing Mark spends his spare time building our new wooden dinghy for Eleutheros. If anyone has any suggestions on what we should name the new dinghy, let us know in the comments below.
In this episode we continue with the blister repair work, as we are finally ready to start spraying some gelcoat. We also carry on rebuilding our rudders, by filling them up with expanding foam, so that we can shape them later and glass over the whole thing. It’s all pretty experimental! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode! Venice, gondolas, canals, Da Vinci, getting gloriously lost… and somehow I’m still trying to figure out where the best spearfishing spot is. 😄⛵🇮🇹 In this episode of Sailing into Freedom, I swap beaches and boatyards for Venice, Italy – one of the great cultural cities of the world. Expect gondolas, hidden alleyways, romantic canals, very questionable “fishing conditions,” budget travel reality, and a visit to the world of Leonardo da Vinci, where genius engineering, flying machines, strange inventions and classic Plucky commentary all collide. There’s also street encounters, accidental comedy, and the usual struggle of a caveman sailor trying to survive in a place overflowing with art, history and expensive gondola rides. If you enjoy sailing lifestyle content, offbeat travel, history, engineering, Venice walking tours, and the unfiltered humor of a sailor out of his natural habitat, this one’s for you. #sailing #sailingintofreedom #venice #italytravel #travelvlog #davinci #engineering #history #budgettravel #europetravel Get your Sailing Into Freedom Crew T-shirt: https://teespring.com/stores/sailing-into-freedom Want more? This is a full 10-minute gondola ride down at Lake Louise Ski Resort in Banff National Park, Canada. After skiing the back bowls for a while, I was starting to feel tired. The lower part of the mountain was also getting a bit icy, so I decided to take the gondola down to the base instead of skiing all the way. I recorded the entire ride, and it turned out I was the only person in the gondola. The result is a quiet and relaxing descent with beautiful winter views of the Rocky Mountains. If you're curious what the full gondola ride down looks like at Lake Louise in winter, this is the complete uncut experience. Filmed on March 11, 2026.
