We also learn how to prepare and cook fresh lobster from our hunter friend Wade and then head into the Guna Yala village to see their cultural dances. Note: In the blogs we refer to Guna Yala as 'San Blas' which is the old Spanish name for the islands. Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-..." Is it THIS BOAT or NOTHING for us? With newfound BUDGET ISSUES, we find ourselves at a CROSSROADS and also a NEW CATEGORY of CATAMARAN...the FIXER-UPPER! But how many boats are there on the market that tick the boxes we need at the price we have to hit? Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY SUNDAY! Cheers!! SEARCH PARAMETERS IN THIS USED CAT GROUP: 1) Under $250k 2) Potentially ANY Age 3) 4 Cabins 4) Mechanically and functionally sound (mostly) While we are searching for our own used cat and have particular extras we're looking for, add-ons like watermaker, solar, etc. won't be part of the scoring. OUR SCORING CATEGORIES 1) BUILD QUALITY - This encompasses both the interior and exterior and the overall quality and durability of items like deck hardware, mechanical systems, decking, windows, cabinetry and hardware, flooring, overall surfaces and materials. 2) SAILABILITY - This focuses primarily on the ergonomics of operating the vessel: the location and orientation of sail handling hardware, helm position and visibility, plus overall performance as reported (these are tried and tested boats, so there is plenty of info out there). We believe from our personal experience with many cat owner friends that these boats are capable of sailing quite well when sailed properly, especially on well-planned passages...does this boat make it easy for the crew to do so? 3) TRAMPOLINE! - We approach this with some humor because obviously young kids LOVE the trampolines, and it's Rivers' PRIMARY reason for wanting a cat. That said, the attributes of the foredeck on a cat play heavily into the enjoyment of the boat at anchor. We've been guests on many cats where the kids enjoyed not only bouncing and rolling about on the tramps, but just hanging out and doing their thing, while the adults hang out on the perimeter. This is one of those "extra" spaces on a cat which make it as much a home as a boat, especially if the kids enjoy it. 4) LIVEABILITY - This category encompasses those things that make living on a boat a joy as opposed to a chore. Overall space, intelligent layout, comfort in the lounging areas and the cabins, plentiful storage in numerous areas, a generous galley, easy access to maintenance areas, and simple dinghy lifting for night security and for underway. 5) VALUE - Since this catamaran group is all about fixer-uppers, the overall value for the money is a huge primary factor. We have to weigh how many boxes the boat ticks off versus the work and money that will have to be put back in to make it a truly nice boat to live and travel on. Some systems may need work or replacing and lots of elbow work may be required...does the price justify it? All of these categories will be scored by both os us based on 5 thumbs (yeah, it's dumb, but it's also fun) then added together. Rivers alone gets to score all 10 points for the trampoline. :-) We hope you enjoy these tours and we hope they're helpful to you in some way! But don't take them too seriously...this is obviously based on a lot of personal opinion and you'll never know for sure until you see the boat yourself. So get on it!! Here we go! Living on a sailboat. The getting to know you stage of our hunter sailboat is in full swing. We are discovering all the little noises, creeks and leaks. And with that comes the work list that never seems to end. Someone once said, “Everything on your boat is broken, you just don’t know it yet” This is the truest statement I have ever heard. Being a new liveaboard sailing couple you really have the opportunity to dive right in and deal with issues as they come up. Well really you have no choice. If it's broke you MUST fix it! We took a page out of Matt’s book of @SailingGoodBadandUgly and started some boat carpentry. The previous owners increased the seating space but really closed off the air flow. So, fresh off a new DIY episode we decided we have the tools, we can make this happen! Wow! What a difference it made in our living space. It’s funny how not every job makes the list. But once you open up one can of worms it explodes into ten more things you never knew you had to do. The good news is by the time we are done we will have touched every part of this boat and know exactly what needs to be done to keep her going. #boatlife #sailing #boatmaintenance #dockwalk #offshoresailing #diy #commonsense #boatsafety #yacht #marina #marine Drying sailing gear that spends most of its time stuck on board in lockers, jammed in the forepeak or abandoned in the lazarette is central to maintaining the condtion of expensive or critical equipment on your yacht. Rust and mildew cost you big money over the long term, so drying your boat's gear whenever possible is a great idea to save money, ensure you understand WHAT you have on board and KNOW where it is for the day it's required.

It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. #boatlife #sailing #sailing #boatmaintenance #cruising #review #rigging #sailor #diy #solosailing #singlehanded Setting off cruising or voyaging on a boat is a fantastic adventure- but what happens if something breaks far from land? You’re going to have to fix it yourself. Now, with modern technology you may be able to get assistance from the shore via email or a phone call- but in the end the rubber is going to have to meet the road and that means you are goi g to need tools, lots of tools. Rigging, mechanical, sail repair, electrical, everyday tools, once a year tools, tools that are only ever to be used in a real emergency. After receiving some comments asking about this I thought I would take you through the tools I have on board, their background, their uses and how I keep them rust free. Today we take a look through my rigging bag ahead of doing a fun job to make old rope sheath into sail ties. After hiring a car we head inland to explore the Granite Skywalk (Castle Rock) where we find that a little research would have prepared us for the 2 hour hike uphill to the beautiful 360 degree views. We head to Elephant Rock to one of the most spectacular and protected swimming beaches from the southern ocean swells. After visiting the ANZAC memorial we inspect the amazing Chainsaw Sculptures. After watching the 2022 New Years fireworks from our boats, @LisaBlairSailstheWorld arrives in preparation for her attempt to set the record to solo circumnavigate of Antarctica (which he has now beaten and set at 92 days). After Jo and Karen offer the assistance of Chris and Pete, the boys help Lisa unload her yacht and even get roped in for vacuuming and scrubbing! With a weather window beginning to form, we leave the marina and head out into the bay anchoring near the Cheyne's II shipwreck in preparation to sailing east towards Esperance. We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. We are just an ordinary Aussie couple exploring what this great world has to offer and hope that we can inspire others just as we were by watching other YouTube channels to follow our dreams. Episode 016 The first time we had the opportunity of exploring Tiritiri Matangi was by catching a ferry from Auckland. The sun was shining and the wind was light. It was a beautiful summer's day and we thoroughly enjoyed our day on Tiritiri Matangi . As we waited for the ferry to take us back, we stated enviously at all the boats anchored in Hobbs Beach and we vowed to have this experience one day too when we owned our own sailboat. This was our opportunity to do so, and what made it even more special, were the conditions were just right for us to stay overnight. This gave us an opportunity to explore so much more of the island paradise that very few people get to see during the day and at night. One of our memorable experiences was when we were tendering back to Tāiko after our night walk and seeing an abundance of fish following us and jumping out of the water wetting us. We'd never experienced anything like it before. Tiritiri Matangi is an island sanctuary that provides refuge for many of our native species, some of which can no longer be found on the mainland. It’s white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters make it a wonderful snorkeling spot too. We hope that you enjoy this video and that Tiritiri Matangi is added to your places of ‘must see’ destinations. Stay the night and who know what you may see – one thing’s for certain…we’re not telling! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment - it helps us out! After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

Losing steering at sea is a potentially severe issue. Mechanical systems can be selected, and consistent maintenance schedules must be used to protect the safety of crew and vessels under challenging situations.

Our boat refit continues this week. We are in shallow water but we feel like we are DROWNING in boat projects! We're keen to get out on the salty seas & finally (learn how to) drop our hook!⚓But we have a never ending list of boat projects that we need to tackle before we can cast our lines! This week we install a crucial system to help us navigate the shallows and know the depth under our keel! AND finally deal with the big black box.. Join us this week as we dive into boat projects in great DEPTH SUBSCRIBE! ► for a new video every single Wednesday https://www.youtube.com/c/allisonjames If you're into outdoor adventures, tiny homes (on wheels & with sails), off-grid living and DIY projects, then you'll want to click that notification bell so you don't miss an episode! WHO WE ARE We are a couple from opposite sides of the world living an adventure based-alternative lifestyle here in the Pacific Northwest. Our time is spent split between land & sea - living part time in our tiny home on wheels (a vintage Airstream that we converted completely ourselves) as well as living aboard our tiny home with sails ( a Catalina 30 that we've been restoring while teaching ourselves how to sail!). Our Tiny Home With Wheels Watch the FULL build from START to FINISH here: https://youtu.be/VljN0LDsHDA Watch the FULL Tour here: https://youtu.be/GTeR0oucPM0 OUR STORY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt8aijVtK_E I (Allison, the Newfie) met James (the Aussie) while working on a remote island 3 years ago. A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate the preciousness of this one beautiful life we've been given. Viewing TIME as our most valuable gift, we've been feeling an urgency in our lives to Live All Out! We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality. The past 12 months we have been working towards making full-time adventure possible. The first step was downsizing and minimizing our lives to fit into a 160ft. Airstream trailer which we converted completely ourselves without any experience. Living full time in our tiny home on wheels created the financial freedom we needed to take the next big step, buying our sailboat! She's another big project, but we're ready for another challenge. And we're pretty motivated by all the amazing ocean adventures that lie ahead! Subscribe to follow along on our journey! Much love, A & J Connect with us! JUST LIKE NEW! Completing Boat Maintenance & Repairs on Our 2 YO PERFORMANCE SAILING CATAMARAN Ep 74 This week the boat work continues at Linton Bay Marina in Panama. We have a couple projects to wrap up, like installing a new door on the nacelle inspection panel. When we hauled the boat we saw the door had been ripped off so we had a new one made and changed the design to a full flush mount door. The inspection door on the diesel tank needs to be closed which should be easy. Key word is “should”. Then we’ll tackle the rudder gudgeons and their brackets. Lastly, we’ll install line cutters on the props. A huge thank you to everyone at Linton Bay Marina who helped us out especially Jose aka Cheo. When we first arrived we weren’t totally at ease, but now feel a part of the community. Our friend even recently told us we look like locals, lol. But now we are ready to move on. Unfortunately, we still have to figure out a solution for our main sail because the sail loft at Shelter Bay didn’t have the piece to repair it properly. Join us next week to see what happens! If you enjoy this video give it a thumbs up, leave us a comment down below and be sure to subscribe to our channel. It really helps us out and lets us know you’re there watching! A huge thank you to our Patrons, we are so grateful for your support! We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. #waeco #boatlife #sailing #sailingonabudget #cruising #offshoresailing #boatmaintenance Having never crossed the Atlantic with a working refrigerator, I thought I might investigate the chances of getting the 24volt Waeco refrigerator we have onboard that has been a cupboard for months! It's a weekend, I have no budget to be messing about ordering parts in for this, so it's time to do some good old-fashioned sleuthing and see if I can't work out WHAT is wrong and fix it with the tools/ parts I have on board- just as I would do at sea. This is Jonathan telling us about SFEM. If you wondered why he is tucking his shirt in at the beginning it is not (he tells me) because he started the video a bit early and forgot to edit the front but because he is making the point about preparing for the job in hand. Much as you service and look after your engine for it to sing away all day without a hitch, so you need to sort out your dress before making your presentation.

#lewmarwinch #offshoresailing #sailingonabudget #sailing #boatmaintenance Following on from the last video where I stripped this winch down - here is the step-by-step rebuild for those wishing to get the best from their equipment without breaking their budget! (How to Take a Winch Apart: https://youtu.be/0RIEIdBlkV4 ) Note: this is how I do this job- not necessarily how YOU should do this job. Possibly 40 of the slowest minutes of your life if you are not into sailing; but undoubtedly a thrilling rollercoaster ride for anyone who owns a number of two speed Lewmar winches and has never had the ball bearings to rebuild it themselves. One of the biggest satisfactions of a diy boater is when a completed sailboat restoration project works as expected. I've always been amazed about all the things you can fix yourself if you have a little patience. In this episode, we are installing a new Vetus Bladder Style Water Tank. On several older boats you will find these bladder style tanks used for water, waste and fuel. When properly installed these tanks will provide years of service without problems. I speak from experience, Reverie is a 1985 Pearson 34 and it has bladder tanks for water and waste. The original tanks were on the boat when I bought it and they did not leak. I chose to replace the water tanks as I was replacing the old polybutylene water lines with new lines and figure I redo the entire system. As you can imagine restoring this old boat is a fun one! I have a few more projects around Reverie and now is a great time to get it done. In previous episodes I showed you how I ran new water lines and installed a new water pump. With the help of Dr Brian Smyth, professor of engineering at the University of Prince Edward Island, we design and fabricate the Bilge Keels for the Wave Rover 650. In part 2 the Keels are tacked together and we assess what went right and what could be improved. There will be a short Wave Rover break for the next 2 weeks so that I can focus on finishing the house build for Mrs. Rover. LOL highs and deathly lows of sailing life Ep 167 We are not the first in Rob's family to own a liveaboard sailboat. Back in the 1970's Rob's brother Kerry was living on a yacht here in Darwin. He then sailed off to Indonesia and beyond, never to return. Tragically he mistakenly sailed into Cambodian waters in 1978. He was captured by the Khmer Rouge and taken back to their notorious prison, S21, where he was tortured and murdered. Using the letters Kerry wrote home we have been retracing his footsteps here in Darwin, which have led us to a tangible link to Kerry's life here. We have also been celebrating the life of our middle child Declan. His humble reaction to getting an iphone for his 18th birthday was beautiful to witness. We had one more treat for him up our sleeve, a road trip to Kakadu national park to see the rock art. Just what every 18 year old dreams of and has a hilarious birthday ending. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

Get yours: https://www.bonfire.com/long-live-victoria-1 Also check out Bob's videos: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheArtofBoatBuilding Artwork on the shirt is by illustrator and ship's carpenter Eli Gafvelin of Sweden. The sheer strake gets its jewelry (which is what Annie B calls bronze hardware... or boat hardware of any kind, really) and gets a couple of other details that are both practical and lovely to look at. The edge gets rounded with a router, and Steve cuts a bead for the looks but mostly for the practicality of knowing where one type of finish ends and the other begins. Steve goes over the choices and reasoning behind the sizes and types of bronze fasteners we're using here and there around the boat. Robin has a first peek at the covering board with all of the details added. The nib planks are milled, glued up, shaped, and installed, bungs n' all. And then Steve puts the sander to them like there's no tomorrow. THANK YOU for your support. Fasten up folks! This week we're learning the ropes & enjoying the view from the top of our mast! We recruit a very knowledgeable mind & skilled set of hands to show us the way - Tim comes aboard! Interested to learn how to dock a sailboat like a pro? Tim teaches us how to do exactly that (and so much more) this episode! This is an educational one crew! We hope you enjoy! Thanks again, Tim! You're a legend. Much love, A & J Follow along on our journey in real time! BOAT LIFE on the Hard - Maintenance + Repairs of a 2 YO Performance SAILING CATAMARAN | Ep. 73 When people think about sailing around the world, the images conjured are sunshine filled days at the helm and trimming sails, dolphins jumping at the bow, snorkeling beautiful reefs or exploring new places, but we’ve found the reality to be a bit different. More time has been spent working on the boat and waiting for parts, either at a dock or at a marina. The hope is that this will change or at least even out. This notion is what keeps us going, the desire to sail our home to experience new places, cultures and natural beauty, so we persevere in the face of challenges, wipe the sweat from our brows, flush the fumes from our eyes, and keep frustration at bay to continue chasing our dream. We came to Linton Bay, Panama on May 30th to have the boat hauled for a bottom paint and repairs requiring the boat to be on the hard. We hadn’t made a reservation because if you recall, coming to Panama was a last minute decision. Upon arrival we learned the lift operator was going on vacation for a month in two weeks time so we reserved the haul out for July 16th and booked a trip to Italy to see Fabio’s mom. We returned to Panama eager to commence, but of course the lift needed maintenance and was not operating. Patience. About a week later, we were thrilled to see the lift working again. Wanderlust was hauled out of the water and the work began; sanding and painting the bottom, and a laundry list of maintenance and repairs. This period has also given us time to reflect a bit and we shared a bit of our introspection in this episode. If you enjoy this video give it a thumbs up, leave us a comment down below and be sure to subscribe to our channel. It really helps us out and lets us know you’re there watching! A huge thank you to our Patrons, we are so grateful for your support! We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind 1600 catamaran, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. The Sailing Project Artemis S3. Ep 42 Happy Tuesday all. This week I was able to install autopilot on my Catalina 30 and have chosen to go with the bullet proof CPT system. Yes the CPT is a bit more money, however you will save time and power with this system. It can also be removed and put on your next boat with little to no scaring on the current vessel. If you have any questions please let me know. Hope you enjoy.... Up next, Bivy stick and some fun....... Season three will still have boat work but I plan to add much more fun.... shout out to @GoPro for making recording all of these super easy. and make sure to check out @Sailing9LIVES for more videos about sailing the hudson and beyond. ------ Dont forget to hammer that like and subscribe button it really helps Want to see more Insta - @The_sailing_project_artemis FB - Sailing Adventurs OG ------------------- Buy me a beer or a bottle of RUM lol? https://gofund.me/85f763bc Artemis Merch https://sailing-project-artemis.creator-spring.com ... #catalina30 #diy #sailing #boatprojects #sailboat #CPT #CPTAutopilot #boats #boating #summer #Autopilot

Rebecca Childress and Michael Hayward on Sailboat Brick House, sail in to Le Marin, Martinique and the DIY sailboat repairs begin. First its the Profurl Roller Furling drum, which is completly seized up, unable to furl and unfurl, and then our handheld VHF radio is drowned in a bucket of water! The prices to repair a sailboat are huge in Martinique and the waiting list long, so we have a roller furling drum brought in and we repair it ourselves. We also get recommended a Retevis VHF radio by some friends and have one of these flown in too, which we unfortunately immediately drop in to the salt water..but its still working! A sailboat always has parts to replaced or maintained and Sailboat Brick House is no different., as she proceeeds on her slow circumnavigation. There are a few repairs we will do while in the port of Le Marin, Martinique. Our wind generator, and autopilot will also get some repairs and maintenance done here! Here is the Retevis RT55 VHF radio we chose: https://amzn.to/3w4kZrf Profurl Roller Furling systems : https://www.profurl.com/images/info_pages/2022-profurl-catalogue-eng-308.pdf ▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/svBrickHouse ✩ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/SYBrickhouse ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store Support us to keep the videos coming: 🍯(Tip Jar) http://whereisbrickhouse.com/tip-jar/ ⏩ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/SVBrickHouse ⏩ Sign up for a FREE membership here: https://www.predictwind.com/?ref=rebeccachildress ⛵️ TWO FREE SAILING COURSES: http://whereisbrickhouse.com/sailing-school ⏩Start your Amazon shopping here: https://amzn.to/2K9MmuA ⏩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store #sailingAfrica #PatrickChildressSailing #TravelsAnimals #sailing #sailboats Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC7DRvfDAoFn5eMyfTnaA8w/join Music Credits Islandesque by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100315 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ Santo Rico by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://www.twinmusicom.org/

In this video we make and fit the rudder tubes that will house the rudder posts in our home made catamaran and we test fit a rudder post. This DIY sailing yacht project is slowly coming together.

This is just a short and quick video documenting how I wrapped our sailboat steering wheel with paracord. I used the half hitch or what is called French Hitching. I used 250 feet of 550 paracord for our 30' wheel.
