If you have a shop vac you know how expensive the filters are! Well this is a quick fix to filter large partials from getting in your shop vac fan that you can do with basic stuff laying around. I think this probably would cost under a dollar with materials used for the cheap filter we made for our shop vac. Things I used for shop vac filter: Porous material for filter Tap to temporarily hold filter in place Zip ties to firmly secure filter Yo can see all this in the video! So to get a new filter for our shop vac would cost about $17 on amazon, and I'm tired of buying them. So I sought a new solution to filter the air coming out of my shop vac that I could do with things in my garage. Since I use this vacuum in my garage I am let worried about dust, most the time I blow the dust out of the garage with the blower. All I really need is to pick up thing I don't want blown in the driveway like trash, contaminated fluids, etc. Since airflow was a high priority, really want a sucky shop vac, I had weed block that I thought would make a great filter. You can easily go with a less porous material that would capture smaller partials, and the great thing, it can be washed and reused. For real, we don't need to make more trash doing this. Now that I have what my filter will be made from I have to cut it to fit. Here is were I can even cut off more material if I want to get better filtering results for the shop vac. Did not do this because as I said, I want max suckage! Time to secure the filter material to the shop vac. So I wrapped the filter around the plastic filter cage wear the original shop vac filter would have been mount. At the point were I started wrapping I taped the material closest to the motor to hold it place to pull more tension on the DIY filter. Once I had the material completely wrapped I used another piece of tape closest to the motor to hold the DIY filter. I then took secured the DIY filter on the plastic lip the the original filter would have went over with zip ties. With the top of the DIY filter in place we I had a lot of material at the bottom of the filter were the original filter is secured on. I cut of the excess DIY filter so that it could be folded over and taped with minimal bulge. this would allow the to use the original filter screw on mount at the bottom of the DIY filter. Note: If you use your shop vac for water you may want to not cut the excess off and just zip tie it to let water dry more easily. In the video you can see the DIY filter in action on our shop vac. I can say that the sucking power was far greater than the OEM filter. Before we decided to build S/V Lynx, a 50’ Performance / Cruising catamaran that we plan to sail as we circumnavigate the planet, we had to make the decision on whether to get a monohull or a catamaran for our voyage. There was a lot to consider in making a choice. We created a spreadsheet calculator to help us decide. This allowed us to weigh the benefits of both types of boats. Not only does it list all the features of each, but it lets you value them according to your own opinion. Episode 019 We've always sailed Te Tāiko double-handed, and until recently, we've been hand steering almost everywhere we've sailed to while waiting to have our autopilot installed. However, being able to sail Te Tāiko single-handed is very important to us as you never know when this will be necessary. So when an opportunity presented itself with a break in the New Zealand winter weather, Adam took it. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sanibelisland #marcoisland #hurricaneian In 2021, we sailed to Sanibel Island and enjoyed the fishing, bike riding and beauty of the island before Hurricane Ian hit September 2022. Our hearts go out to those who lost so much. This video is in remembrance of Sanibel. While there we visited the JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Shell Museum (better than it sounds!), and caught snook. It was a beautiful sail back to Marco Island, averaging 11 knots SOG with over 19 AWS, followed by a calm night anchored in front of the beach. Back at the dock, Stephen worked on his bird deterrent methods. The bird droppings and seeds they leave behind are an issue on the docks. So, Stephen fabricated a medieval spike device and we placed it on the top of our mast. It helped somewhat, but then they decided to land on the spinnaker sheet and the rigging. Recently Stephen read a book called “The Fuzz”, which discusses all of the ways that park ranges deal with wildlife and the bottom line is - nothing will work. It may work for a couple of hours, but they always figure it out and move to their next favorite spot. So, Christmas decorations just had to distract us from the bird problem. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Genius Mechanic Tony, met me on an island to oversee some routine maintenance and help discover the reason I sometimes had trouble starting the engine. We also checked the impeller plate and cleaned the air filter. We also checked the gas filter, oil filter, and levels, and also winches. All were in good shape. Episode 018 New Zealand is known for its strict Category 1 requirements for yachts registered in New Zealand intending to do an offshore passage...and for good reason too. Before embarking on an offshore passage, one of the requirements is that you have to have already sailed across an ocean and if you haven't, then you have to take someone with you who has. So, when Adam was offered an opportunity to crew on a sailboat from Tahiti to New Zealand with two very experienced skippers, he jumped at the opportunity. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
