Classic Swan Sparkman & Stephens Ketch from the legendary Nautor yard in Finland. This Nautor Swan 57 S&S Ketch "TINDORA" was purchased by her current and second owner in 2000. Both owners continually maintained this yacht with a lot of love, care and never cut back on maintenance costs. The teak deck and the engine have been renovated in 2021/2022. The yacht is equipped with newly fitted batteries, a bow truster, a generator, 5 x electric winche, freezer, dingy, outboard engine, life raft, etc. The masts have been refitted and painted in 2011. It's not always boat work and sailing! Sometimes it's just time to be social a bit crazy and has some fun. And while trying to remake the lost episode about how to understand a mass production yacht I'm now showing you the social side of BE FREE. Unfortunately, some individuals with access to a keyboard and wifi can not behave so I had to block quite a lot of accounts before uploading this re-made episode again. One of the reasons I wanted a fairly new boat was to not spend all the time between sailing only doing maintenance and upgrades. BE FREE certainly has delivered as a pretty trouble-free boat taking into consideration the number of miles sailed and years of the full-time liveaboard. Also, I might be among the most social solo sailor out here on the seven seas and enjoy spending time with new and old friends. It's quite amazing how quickly it's possible to establish a social network even on a tiny island where the minority speaks English. But then again Columbians are among the sweetest and friendliest people you can encounter and The BE FREE bar always delivers. I believe you need time to understand a new destination's culture and people and what's going on under the surface. Making local friends is the fastest way to this and also enriches your stay on so many levels. I'm also saying see you later to the Sophisticated Lady crew but will soon meet up again in Bocas Del Toro - Panama. Meanwhile, I hope to have my MackBook rescued but don't have too high hopes after it was drenched in water. What the heck is Jeffrey's Marine Glue, anyhow? Well, it's a mix of tar, bitumen, and probably a whole lot of other stuff. As you'll see, even though Jeffrey's Marine Glue looks like it chips out of its container, Steve is able to demonstrate how flexible this marine glue is. It doesn't shrink too much in cold temperatures, can get a little sticky in high temperatures, and can handle melting multiple times for repairs and resetting into the seam. Modern glues cure chemically, whereas this stuff is hard wearing *and* repairable. Is it old? Yes. But it is perfect for this job—tried and true. Traditional methods in boatbuilding are not a religion, they're a science. Choosing methods and materials that have worked in the past for many people in many areas of the world is smart, affordable, and easy to source. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. Some of the blame for this can be laid at the boat builder’s feet. Fuel tanks are often hard to access and many have no drain cock or inspection hatch so owners have to rely on their engines’ inline fuel filters to stop dirt and water getting into the injectors and combustion chamber. However, these should be the last line of defence as they can quickly become overwhelmed if diesel bug or contaminated fuel gets into the system. Nor do they stop water and sludge accumulating at the bottom of the fuel tank, below the level of the fuel pick-up, caused by condensation and contaminated fuel. Rather than drawing fuel from 20mm above the bottom of the tank as most fuel pick-ups do, the Dipper deliberately sucks out all the sludge and water that lurks at the very bottom of it and that causes rust to set in and provide the perfect breeding environment for diesel bug. This contaminated fuel is then passed through a separator that removes any water and debris from the diesel and returns the clean fuel to the tank. Because diesel bug only thrives in the presence of water, if you get rid of the water you solve the bug issue too. The heart of the unit is a low-power 12V pump that gently sucks the bottom 3-5% of the fuel from the bottom of your tanks at the rate of two litres per minute to prevent it emulsifying. This is passed through a series of baffles and swirl chambers that separates any water and sludge present and allows it to settle to the bottom of the unit for draining off later. The clean fuel passes out of the top of the separator and, after a final filtration process, is returned to the main tank. Due to the efficiency of the separator, the final filter is a 40-micron stainless steel mesh that rarely needs cleaning and should never need replacing. By keeping the tank clean it should also improve the life of any filters further down the line. The Dipper costs £785.40 and can be installed by a DIY-competent owner or by a professional at relatively low cost. In our latest video, Rupert Jessett from KJ Howells talks us through how to renovate old teak so that it looks like new again. The company have been based at our Cobb's Quay Marina in Poole since 1987, providing bespoke carpentry services and the supply of fine quality teak, wood and solid surface products to the yachting and marine community. Rupert has been a professional yacht skipper for the last 25 years and has a deep personal knowledge of yacht refitting, deck fitting and maintenance. The teak cleaner and teak renovator shown in the video are not harmful to aquatic life or the marine environment. Test results show that the two products quickly turn into harmless salts after use. Avoid cleaning on grass or other sensitive areas but concrete and tarmac are two suitable surfaces to clean on.

South African Entrant in the Golden Globe Race around the world is Kirsten Kirsten Neuschäfer who has been sailing dinghies since her childhood, but sailing since 2006 as a profession. From sailing training to sailboat deliveries, she built a diverse set of skills and experience. Kirsten’s longest single-handing was a delivery from Portugal to South Africa with only a windvane as self-steering, on an old and maintenance-intensive 32-foot ferro-cement sloop. In 2015, she began working for Skip Novak on his Pelagic Expeditions to South Georgia, The Antarctic Peninsula, Patagonia and the Falklands. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Since our wind generator had stopped spinning before, we felt it was the magnets in the wind generator and we needed to get new magnets sent to repair the wind generator, The KISS wind generator supplies the bulk of the power generation on our sailboat, along with solar power, and unless we wanted to run our portable Honda generator or diesel engine all the time, we needed to repair our wind generator as quickly as possible. Sometimes you just have to repair your old sailboat before you can play in a new port. Beneteau First 47.7 Performance was designed by Bruce Farr and built-in 2000. She is in good sailing condition, carefully maintained by her owner, who has been using the yacht for charters with skippers and sailing experiences. Fast and manageable boat for navigations of any type and condition. Structurally and visually in perfect condition and with constant maintenance. The boat has been taken out of the water yearly for antifouling and polishing. Dispatched on the 6th list for exploitation in Spain, which includes approved practices in schools. In this episode we head to England to commence our next big travel adventure, which will be described as a "slow delivery" of a J133 sailboat from England to the USA. Upon arrival in England, we have most of the first day to wait for the boat owner to arrive, so we get a chance to explore the town of Windsor, with it's epic castle backdrop, and then make our way to the nearby World Outrigger Championships where Kevin's aunt Diana is competing with the Canadian contingent. The next day we find the boat, "Assarain IV" (pronounce As-a-rain), at Port Hamble, where we explore and start out journey preps with some maintenance items, shopping, and a few sea trial day sails.
