The Hydrovane Rudder is held in place on the Shaft with a Locking Pin. Boats with a swim step or platform will find it easier to put the Rudder on. Double enders or traditional transom style boats will need to do so from the dinghy or dock. Removing the Rudder involves pulling the Locking Pin and hauling it onboard. Thanks for watching!
The Hydrovane Drive Unit's Heading Tube can be switched out for an extended version - the XTHT12 or XTHT20. This component raises the Vane’s pivot point by 12 in/30 cm or 20 in/50 cm while keeping Drive Unit controls at a height that is easiest for operating. The Extended Heading Tube is usually recommended to avoid aerial obstructions that have been added to the transom. For example, to raise the Vane's pivot point above an arch or out of the way of a dinghy on davits.
Hydrovane is thrilled to add these uniquely wing-ed sails to our range of offshore gear! Stability, lift, ease of use, fly from 70° to 180° AWA - there are many reasons why these are truly exceptional sails. Especially for a short handed crew. Yes, the first time we hoisted ours was at the dock with hardly a breath of wind. Impressive to see it fly! And we’re even more enthralled using it out on open water 😝 Choose from standard colour patterns or customize with a logo/design like we did. Yes, the XT (Extendable) Vane a great performer for heavier or faster boats... but we supply it just as often as a workaround for installations with nearby aerial obstructions or a mizzen boom - as Will and Richard explain.
A reliable, quality, watermaker? YES! Will and Richard (and special guests, the twins) answer common questions about the system, and explain why we at Hydrovane feel so confident including ECHOTec in our suite of 'other product' offerings to customers around the world.
Did you know that Hydrovane has been a dealer of the Watt&Sea Hydrogenerator since 2015... or could it be 2011? Hmmm. What's the power output at 6.5 knots of boat speed? Where best to mount it? We put Will and Richard in the Hot Seat to introduce themselves and this awesome product!
Did you know your Hydrovane Drive Unit has eight small stainless steel axles? If you notice lateral movement in the Drive Unit and/or your Hydrovane is having a harder time holding course (the Vane and Rudder are not effectively 'talking to each other'), you need to check those axles! Richy explains how the axles should appear, what a loose axle looks like, and how to re-set if necessary.
The Hydrovane's Shaft Locking Pin, when inserted, secures the Hydrovane rudder fore and aft. Richy explains when to insert the pin, and when to be mindful that it is NOT inserted so the Hydrovane rudder can free trail.
Are you planning your Hydrovane installation? Richy talks through considerations for orienting the H Bracket with shaft clamp castings above or below the flange.
During initial installation you tightened the Fork Bolt (#58) to set the tiller assembly in position on the Hydrovane shaft. However, in rough conditions it is possible for the Hydrovane tiller to be knocked out of alignment. This will affect performance. Resetting the tiller is an easy fix that you can perform on land or at sea. Follow Richy's steps!

Will describes the XT (Extendable) Vane on passage from Port Angeles, WA, to Crescent City, CA - August 2017
Thanks Bruce - 'SV Liberty Call' - for the video. Watch our for those swells! Note how much more functional and safe the cockpit becomes when the main steering wheel is fixed / not moving.
Thank you to 'Sea Cloud', HR 48, for sending us this great footage! Note the dinghy on davits... no affect on Hydrovane performance. As long as the vane can pivot freely, the dinghy can rest up on the Hydrovane drive unit or shaft. The line running forward is the remote course adjustment line. Looks like a smooth ride!

Thanks Martyn for this great video showing the Hydrovane hard at work off Atlantic France. Note the Stubby Vane clearing under the gantry.
Kaiquest (Jeanneau SO 43) sails across the Straight of Georgia. We're using the Extendable 'XT' Vane - which was designed with light airs in mind - but also works great in windier conditions, as Will demonstrates. Also of note is that the Hydrovane is on the weather side, with a 26 inch offset. The small amount of extra rudder exposure on this point of sail is no problem at all.
Great footage off Mallorca... This Garcia 48 Catamaran weighs over 23 Tons! "It works perfectly on a 23 tons aluminum cat - GARCIA 48, entered in the next WORLD ARC" And a later report: "This week we tested the GARCIA with 25 knots wind from behind - excellent with your XT vane !!!!!!" Note the Extended Heading Tube (often recommended for Catamarans to get the Vane up even higher). The video also shows our Watt&Sea bracket (attached to the Hydrovane Shaft). Pretty cool stuff...
"Works like a charm" Thanks for video, Koos!
An early morning winter sail in Canada's Gulf Islands with the Extendable 'XT' Vane... Light airs, downwind. Note: Our windex shows a wind direction that is off by 60 degrees... yes, it needs to be calibrated! Wind is coming from the starboard quarter. You can see that the Vane is set into the wind.
