With no wind and cold, still conditions, we relied mostly on the engine—so Floh gave our Volvo Penta a thorough check before departure. Wrapped in woolly hats and blankets, we settled into the rhythm of a quiet passage, keeping things moving with snacks, small chores, music, and laughter. Her transom is in dire need of repairs. Remember, she was built with 100-year-old Honduran Mahogany from a boat we salvaged during the boatbuilding process, and some of that wood is starting to give up the ghost. I was able to not-so-easily remove her knees using my pole saw and a hacksaw blade. Then, Robin and I hauled her out and propped her up against a palm tree where I could do the rest of the repairs and fiberglassing. Without the knees in place, you can clearly see the transom is pulling away from the hull. We also have a few cracks in the transom from where our tender motor sits. I’m going to reinforce that part of the transom, apply TotalBoat Thixo, and fiberglass over it. That should get Victoria ready for whatever adventures lie ahead! While the Thixo and fiberglass cure, I give Victoria a good bath—and Robin hits the Boca Grande bike path for a run with Akiva! They both need it! Beyond being a great place to do Victoria’s transom repairs, Boca Grande is a hot spot for wildlife viewing. From the boat, we spotted pelicans and Ospreys, and from our paddle boards we spotted iguanas, manatees, rays, and about a million tropical fish! Perhaps even more beautiful than Boca Grande is the quiet island of North Captiva, which me, Robin and Akiva were excited to explore. First stop: hiking Captiva’s beaches and nature trails, and passing a pod of about ten manatees soaking up the mid-day sun! The destruction from hurricane Ian is still very evident on North Captiva, where not many homes made it our unscathed. Some have been rebuilt, but many have not. The next stop for us is Sanibel, provided we can make it out of our anchorage without running aground. After a long haul from the Florida Keys to Georgia, we finally got our vehicles settled in. The ride was a blast—despite a sore backside! The poor Suzuki Hayabusa was in desperate need of a cleaning after the journey, we found a cozy storage unit for its home and made it shiny again. Meanwhile, our TaylorMade 2-step wasn’t quite cutting it for the new slip, so we built a platform to raising the steps up easy boat access. Enough DIY—adventure called! We ditched the tools and went exploring, stumbling upon a beautiful walking beach. Steve, of course, couldn’t help but admire Karen’s beach bikini, which led to all kinds of mischievous thoughts. Back on board, the never-ending toilet saga continued! This time, we tackled the VIP toilet, re-plumbing it and added a macerator with fresh discharge hoses. And of course, no day is complete without dancing! We moved to some great music—sometimes to tracks we can't use on our channel due to copyright, so we find similar beats to share. A quick and easy hack for taming the anchor locker lid when working in the locker with waves or wind. While trying to anchor my boat in heavy wind and waves, I discovered the hatch does not stay open and can slam down on your hand. Simply placing a tether with a small latch or carabiner will secure the anchor locker lid and keep it from closing while you work. Mit einem geliehenen 5-Tonnen-Hydraulikabzieher löste ich den Propeller mit dramatischem Knall und sicherte ihn durch eine selbstgefertigte Sicherungsscheibe. Der Kampf mit dem festsitzenden Bronzegleitlager und den verkrusteten Dichtringen brachte mich mehrfach an den Rand der Verzweiflung – doch letztlich rettete ich meinen C-Drive vor dem drohenden Seewassereintritt und sparte mindestens 1.000€ Werftkosten. "Cupisalimmi" aktivitesindeyiz, grubumuzdaki 17 tekne ile kapışıyoruz 🏁. 2 günlük faaliyette bolca yedik-içtik-eğlendik-çekilişlere katıldık ve elbette kapıştık, üstelik bir kupa daha aldık. Müthiş anılar ve dostluklar biriktirdik. 😣 O hafta, teknemiz full dolu; aksi gibi mazot depomuz dahi tam dolu, su depomuz dolu hatta bu sefer 4 kişilik kadroyuz. Eleven'ın deplasmanı epeyce ağır. Hava ise ilk gün 25-28 knotlarda seyrediyor. Gökova'nın denizi oldukça kabarık. Ortam ister istemez gergin ve heyecanlı bir atmosfer var... biz de bu heyecanın bir parçası olmaya gönüllü olduk. 🏆 İnsan ister istemez bu tür aktivitelerde gaza geliyor. O gazla biz de ne biliyorsak zamandan tasarruf ve liderliğe oturmak için kendi imkanlarımızı ortaya koyduk. Sevinçle 2 gün boyunca grubumuzun lideri olduk. Ancak yaptığımız bir hata yüzünden 3'lük kupası aldık! Bu serüvenin her anı bizim için ders oldu. En este video os enseño cómo han quedado las fundas de las ruedas del timón y una pequeña corrección que monté mal de los rizos de la vela mayor. Y lo más importante, seguimos con la domotización del barco basándonos en la aplicación Home Assistant. En esta ocasión hemos instalado un sensor de humo y un par de sensores de fugas de agua. Los hemos ubicado en sitios donde en condiciones normales nunca debería haber agua (junto a la hélice de proa y en el cofre de popa) Home assistant es un software libre que permite integrar cientos de sensores disponibles en el mercado y también permite fabricar los sensores a medida, como ya hicimos con el monitor de sentina inteligente. Todo ello se puede monitorizar bien desde el barco o bien desde tu casa (o cualquier otro sitio) y recibir alarmas. Las posibilidades son enormes, el siguiente proyecto que voy a hacer es un monitor de baterías, ahora mismo tengo la batería del generador y las baterías de la hélice de proa no las tengo monitorizadas. Cualquier problema con los cargadores haría que se descargasen y las tendría que reemplazar. We’re excited to be able to sail again—it’s been a while since we’ve enjoyed a good sail! While anchored in Cape Coral, we heard a new and unfamiliar noise, a crackling or popping sound. At first, I thought it was an electrical shortage, so I turned off power to the boat…but that wasn’t it. Then I thought maybe something on deck was making the noise, but that also wasn’t it. After a quick Google search, we found out that what we were hearing was pistol shrimp! The pistol shrimp is a small yet powerful marine creature renowned for its loud snapping sound and intense heat generation. This unique ability has disrupted military sonar, inspired clean energy research, and appeared in popular culture. And now we’re hearing it on Arabella. Heading out of Cape Coral was an adventure in and of itself—I’ve never seen more boats on the water! There was a line of boat traffic as far as the eye could see in both directions. Fortunately, our destination was a lot less crowded… Cabbage Key is a small, under-developed 100-acre island off of Pine Island in Charlotte Harbor. It got its name because of the plentiful Cabbage Palm trees that grow on the island. Not only is Cabbage Key a hidden tropical paradise, but there are bayous and keys all around that are fun to explore via paddleboard or kayak. And that’s just what we did… Robin found a paddleboard route that goes around the back of Cabbage Key, into Murdock Bayou, through a natural mangrove tunnel called the “Tunnel of Love,” and into a blue lagoon on the back of Cayo Costa. After breakfast at the Dollar Bill Bar on Cabbage Key, we set off on our adventure. We landed on a shell-covered white sand beach on the Gulf side of Cayo Costa where a long walk on the beach did our souls some good. The next day, we hit the island’s small network of nature trails, fawning over the new-to-us flora. We left one small reminder of our presence, and headed on to the next anchorage—where we tied our stern off to a few mangroves, and set a trip line for the anchor. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. 🌧️Il pleut des cordes… et l’eau s’infiltre à plusieurs endroits ! ⛵ Direction le bateau pour voir où ça fuit… et là, mauvaise surprise : il y a beaucoup de fuites ! 😱 🧐 Résultat : la moitié de l’accastillage de pont va devoir être démontée pour refaire l’étanchéité.
