We were the guests of honour at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club in Glasgow, Scotland, to share our story of how we sold everything we owned and bought a sailboat to live on. We have spent the last three years sailing around the Caribbean islands, through Central America and have now sailed across the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia. Not only does the element accumulate a huge amounts of mineral deposits from the hard water but on this occasion, so did the inlet valve and inner casing . So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3) and called her Odd. The 4th season has been a dream coming true… we explored the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean, where we received an offer and we sold our boat. So, we moved to France to start building a brand new aluminum 43ft sailboat. The boatyard is gonna build the hull and other aluminum parts and we are gonna take over and finish the rest of the boat ourselves (Season 6). While the boatyard builds the hull we are gonna be converting a cargo van into our tiny house on wheels to live while building the boat (Season 5). But wait? What happened to the house? Episode 044 After a busy few months, we are starting to reap the rewards of our hard work and we start enjoying life back on anchor. We have made our way up the coast, 30 nautical mile, to Whangaroa Harbour, in Northland New Zealand where we spend some time relaxing. Although, our sailboat is well provisioned, we are wanting some fresh supplies, but the problem is we're in a remote location with the nearest shop either a short car ride to Kaeo or a half an hour taxi ride (or 15 nautical mile sail up the coast) to Mangōnui Harbour. We decided to try our hand at doing an online shop and grocery delivery. Adam also gets an early Christmas present that he has wanted for at least two years, and we are joined by our good friends Pam & Dene who are not only great company but get us out exploring the anchorage by boat and foot! From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Der Bau des DIY Warmwasserboilers geht weiter, die Isolierung wird hergestellt, bei Squib an Bord wird die Steuersäule innen gestrichen und die Akkus ziehen an ihren endgültigen Platz. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Dirk repariert unsere beiden SPW-Drehflügelpropeller, nachdem sie zunehmend mehr Spiel hatten. Statt 5.000 Euro für neue Propeller investiert er nur 155 Euro für Originalersatzteile vom Hersteller SPW. Danach sind die Propeller wieder wie neu. Die Drehhflügelpropeller und der Service von SPW sind einfach topp !!!!! Dirk repairs our two SPW rotary blade propellers after they have become more and more loose. Instead of spending 5,000 euros on new propellers, he invests just 155 euros on original spare parts from the manufacturer SPW. After that, the propellers are like new again. The rotary blade propellers and the service from SPW are absolutely top !!!!!

I build new handles for the Zwilling Henckels kitchen knives which had POM handles and which after about 10 years in the dishwasher were now showing signs of breakage. The creation is done with hobby tools. The wood I used is ash.

Sailing - Low Cost DIY Racing Computer. This is an update on the previous videos showing an embedded DIY racing computer. As you all know, costs have skyrocketed and we may be looking at trying to stay under $200 after this is all done LOL!. I worked on a lot of the project details with the China vendor that makes the GPS and Bluetooth modules. Note that they make the GPS modules for high-end drone manufacturers so the quality is top-notch. I asked them for the NRE to make a Bluetooth and GPS system on a board so that I could develop an app to connect to the system. The NRE is about $5K USD so that is on hold for right now. So to keep the project moving I am working on a Flutter/Dart app and this video shows the prototype. The app will be able to use either GPS L1/L5 of the future BLE and GPS module. Note that most of the new iPhones and Android phones at the high end are waterproof. Let me know your thoughts and as soon as the season starts again in April I will start testing. Class legal? NO but . . . I am looking into if I can force the phone to be in magnetic compass mode ONLY and turn off the GPS for the class rules. Will they accept this? Time will tell but eventually, this is going to come up. We did an epic hike in the island of Oa Pou in the Marquesas of French Polynesia. It was a long and steep hike which at times was between two very steep slopes and required ropes in several places. We love hiking and despite the initial resistance, we found many benefits for our kids. On the way down we found 'Manfred' a man who has made his home here in the forest where he makes the most delicious chocolate and attempts to live a self sufficient life by powering his home from the energy of the river. We have been laying just meter away from Roald Amundsen’s «Gjøa», which Amundsen sailed as the first ever through the North-West Passage in 1906. Next lays also «Fram» which the same hero, Roald Amundsen, sailed south to the Antarctic. Amundsen became the first man ever to reach the south pole. And last but not least, our hero Thor Heyerdahl and his Kon-Tiki museum. Before launching BareBare the crane had launched a renaissance replica built in the museum area. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Its in the middle of the tropical rainforests by the La Soufrière volcano. If there is renewed activity in the volcano, the trails are closed. Approximately 400,000 people visit the falls annually. There is a very small entrance fee. Details on each waterfall follow. We visited the Premier and the Second Waterfalls on our visit. Premier Waterfall 377 ft drop Trail - long and steep with plenty of rock climbing. 7 miles. Plan 6 hours for this hike. Very Difficult. Dangerous. Elevation: 3000 ft. Gain during hike of 1400 ft. Carbet River water source is located 1.2 miles upstream at a 4300 ft elevation. Second Waterfall 360 ft drop Trail - Conveniently accessible on a paver path only 20 minutes from parking. Your view is from an overlook deck. Elevation: 2,200 ft. If you visit, take time to also visit the Little Paradise Hot Spring, located nearby. Third Waterfall 66 ft drop Greatest water volume of any waterfall in Guadeloupe. Trail - only accessible on foot to experienced climbers. Well today the sun decided to join us and it brought lots of people to the lake. I think I spent as much time chatting today as I did actually doing stuff!! So we firstly help a new Lugger onto her mooring. We need to get her off her trailer and into the water and then Lulu is used to tow her to her mooring. After lunch and a quick play with the drone we do a few projects. The bird scarer lines weren't tied on properly as it was dark when I left Lulu last week and they got terribly tangled up so we address that and then test the new jetboil bracket which looks good. Then we go and pick Kevin up and get a quick sail in. Co-piloting Lulu we attempt the 5-4-1 challenege together to see if we can beat my current time. Alas the wind doesn;t allow for that but it was a fun sail anyway. A very lovely sunny, fun, chatty day on the water. The owners have records of everything that has been done to her.
