This episode, we explore one of the most remote and restricted places on Earth: Chagos. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Chagos Archipelago is a chain of coral atolls few people will ever visit. With no towns, no resorts, and no permanent residents, these islands feel almost untouched — both above and below the surface. After securing a permit and sailing days across open ocean, we dropped anchor inside Salomon Atoll. What we found was extraordinary. Crystal-clear lagoons, thriving coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life unlike anything we’ve seen before. Even the Chagos clownfish, found nowhere else on Earth, thrives here within one of the largest marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean. But Chagos is more than just a remote paradise. For generations, the Chagossian people lived on these islands, building communities around the coconut plantations and surrounding reefs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, they were forced to leave their homeland. Today, the islands remain largely uninhabited — quiet, beautiful, and layered with history. In this episode, we search for unridden waves, explore abandoned settlements, dive some of the healthiest reefs in the world, and reflect on what it means to visit a place like this as a sailing family. This is Chagos — a paradise with a past. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days. In this Episode, boatbuilder Alan and Pioneer Sailing Trust apprentice Jamie work on Jinnie's aft knee, the structural, triangular bracket that reinforces the connection between the transom (rear), hull sides, and deck beams to prevent wracking and twisting. The aft knee is essential for structural integrity, particularly at high-load points, and is installed using mastic in Jinnie's case. On board Swan 51, the new entry-level model in the Cruising range by Nautor Swan.Fifty-one feet has always been a meaningful size for the brand: it was exactly this length that inspired the very first design by Germán Frers — a truly iconic and successful dimension. The 50–55 ft segment remains a central size in today’s market, offering the perfect balance between performance and comfort. The Swan 51 is designed for true bluewater cruising, with the possibility of two or three spacious and highly comfortable cabins. Time has passed since that original 51-footer, bringing with it a huge leap in innovation. Just looking at the hulls side by side tells the story: today’s Swan 51 features a powerful, voluminous hull, wide aft sections and twin rudders — a clear evolution in both design and capability. @antoniovettese @nautorswan_official . #Swan51 #NautorSwan #BluewaterSailing #LuxurySailing #SailingDesign

After two beautiful days sailing and anchoring, we headed back into Port Protection looking for work after a powerful Alaskan storm rolled through the region. What we didn’t expect was to pull into the Back Bay and spot a couple of trees resting on top of someone’s house. Hurricane-force winds tore through Port Protection, uprooting massive trees, triggering small landslides, and damaging homes, boardwalks, and foundations. The house we found sits on a rocky, exposed shoreline where two large trees slid down the cliff and landed directly on the roof. Thankfully no one was inside. In this episode of Alaskan Gypsy Life, we: • Assess storm damage in Port Protection • Stabilize a shifting foundation • Remove weight from the roof • Inspect interior and structural damage • Work through solar, inverter, and generator systems • Plan safe tree removal on unstable terrain This is what self-reliant living in remote Alaska really looks like. Living aboard allows us to take our skills wherever they are needed most. Sometimes that means sailing. Sometimes that means chainsaws, harnesses, mud, and a slipping hillside. Port Protection endured one brutal winter with record snow and multiple major windstorms. Homes, trails, and boardwalks were heavily impacted. We are grateful to help. If you enjoy real-life remote Alaska stories, storm aftermath, off-grid problem solving, and the unpredictable beauty of Alaskan living, you’re in the right place. We visited an animal reserve in Christchurch, New Zealand. I only filmed a little footage in horizontal movie format. The rest will be broken up into a dozen vertical shorts. If you love seeing cute animals, check out our shorts from Willowbank Reserve NZ and Cremshaw Wildlife Park in Perth, Australia. The capybaras were so much bigger than we thought they would be. They were very chill. They are the largest mammal in the rodent family. Mammals are warm-blooded, have fur and nurse their young. Rodents have specialized self-sharpening teeth. The eels were very happy to be hand fed. There was one very large blue-eyed eel and several medium sized eels. The ducks tried to get in on the action but were disappointed we did not have any duck feed for them. They were quite a few deer at this animal reserve but they were tucked away under the shade of a willow tree.

Description: ▶️ Watch the full Canary Sailing Series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQknaPbK41cM7eXaTs7h8emvAc6NwMg34 In this episode, we set sail southbound from Santa Cruz to Los Cristianos — a passage that begins as routine but quickly turns unforgettable. Our route takes us through one of Tenerife’s notorious acceleration zones, where winds funnel around the island’s steep topography, particularly Mt. Teide, and can intensify without warning. Sure enough, we’re soon pushing through 20–30 knots, surrounded by hundreds of playful dolphins. But the real heart-stopper? Unexpected visitors… With fresh memories of reports about orca interactions with sailboats circulating since 2020, tensions run high when we spot three orcas near Tenerife — a statistically rare, once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter. In the moment, though, logic takes a back seat to adrenaline. We follow recommended best practices: slow down, drop sails, stay calm (or at least try to!), keep movements minimal, and suit up in lifejackets while letting the whales do their thing. What unfolds is a passage that is equal parts exhilarating, humbling, and briefly terrifying — classic Sailing ELANE style. ⏱️ Timestamps 0:00 🚢 Departing Santa Cruz, Tenerife 0:08 🌬️ Preparing for Tenerife’s Notorious Acceleration Zone 0:34 🎶 Sailing Life Montage — “You and I Can Weather Any Storm” 1:17 📺 Episode Intro — Family Sailing Adventure Begins 1:34 🧭 Route Plan: Santa Cruz to Los Cristianos 2:27 🌥️ Weather, Wind Forecast & Downwind Strategy 2:51 ⛵ Storm Sail Ready — Safety Preparations 3:48 🌊 Downwind Cruising at 5–9 Knots 5:23 ⛰️ Mount Teide Clouds Over Tenerife 5:34 🪢 Genoa Sail Setup & Rolling Ocean Swell 8:56 🐬 First Dolphin Encounter — Pure Magic 10:01 🤩 Surrounded by Playful Dolphins 11:47 🐋 ORCAS SPOTTED — Tension Rises 12:21 🚨 Family Prepares — Life Jackets On 13:55 😰 Close Orca Encounter — Nerve-Wracking Moments 14:27 📊 Orca Boat Interactions Explained (2020–2021) 15:52 👀 Are They Coming Back? 16:28 🌊 Dramatic Waves in the Acceleration Zone 17:06 🐬 Dolphins Surfing the Waves 18:12 ⚡ Eventful Passage Continues 19:26 🐦 Massive Bird Feeding Frenzy 20:50 🌊 Splash Over the Deck 22:22 📻 Distress Call Heard on the Radio 23:26 ✅ Clear of the Acceleration Zone 24:36 😊 Relief — Orcas Have Moved On 25:09 🏝️ Arrival at Los Cristianos Harbor 25:43 🌅 Sunset Anchorage with Stunning Cliffs 26:28 🏖️ Exploring the Tourist Area --- CREDITS: Movavi Video Editor 26 Epidemic Sound: Phoenix Rising - Edgar Hopp Weather Any Storm (Instrumental) - Cody Francis Beach Goer - Frook Golden City - Jo Wandrini Rowing, Boat Squeaks, Water Splashes Greig_Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46_No. 3, Anitra's Dance - Odyssey Orchestra Ocean, Respirator Bubbles, Underwater Breathing, Diving, Argentina Narrow Escape - Dream Cave Dark Turns to Light - Hampus Naeselius Staying Here - Kikoru Other Media: r/ThatsInsane - SurayaThrowaway12 --- #SailingElane #SailingAdventure #OrcaEncounter #SailingLife #FamilySailing #LiveaboardLife #SailingTenerife #AtlanticCrossingPrep #SailingWithKids #BoatLife #OceanAdventure #DownwindSailing #WildlifeAtSea #DolphinEncounter #Orcas #TenerifeSailing #LosCristianos #SailingVlog #CruisingLife #SailboatLife #WomenWhoSail #SailingFamily #OceanLife #SailingYouTube #AdventureAtSea
For the first time in nearly 20 years, we removed the cover and raised the mizzen sail aboard our steel schooner Alaskan Gypsy. This 775 square foot mizzen was built in 1993 by Mariner Sails in Ketchikan, Alaska. The original owners launched Gypsy in 1992 and invested in hand-sewn 12 oz cloth, bolt rope and rings, and two reef rows. Since the early 2000s, this sail had been sitting quietly under its weathered cover. Until now. On a rare calm February day in Alaska’s Inside Passage, we finally hoisted it. Four sails flying. Snow on the mountains. Glassy water. And for the first time, we saw what this tall ship truly looks like under canvas. We’re learning to sail a five-sail steel schooner in Southeast Alaska. Some days bring wind. Some days bring mechanical troubleshooting. This day brought both — and a reminder of why we’re doing this in the first place. Grateful for the builders. Grateful for the history. Grateful for the chance to carry it forward. ⛵ Boat: Steel Schooner Alaskan Gypsy 📍 Location: Alaska’s Inside Passage 🎥 First drone footage with four sails raised ⚓ Living aboard and learning as we go If you love real sailing life, Alaska cruising, and tall ship dreams brought back to life, subscribe and come along. 00:00 Welcome Aboard Alaskan Gypsy 00:14 The 1993 Mizzen Sail History 01:53 How Long Has This Sail Been Covered? 02:29 First Time the Cover Comes Off 03:53 First Look at the Mizzen 07:21 Hoisting the Mainsail & Mizzen Setup 12:36 Four Sails Flying (Drone Footage) 13:49 Searching for Wind in Snow Pass 17:02 Engine Fuel Shutoff Issue 18:32 Troubleshooting the Problem 20:26 Back Underway 22:09 Sails Down & Heading to Anchorage 23:03 First Day Reflections Under Power 25:17 Wrapping Up the Day
Are Taswell yachts the best-kept secret in bluewater cruising? In this video, we take a deep dive into Taswell yachts and compare them directly to one of the most respected names in offshore sailing: Oyster Yachts. Using real-world listings, we show how a Taswell 56 can sell for hundreds of thousands less than a comparable Oyster 56, despite sharing a similar mission, pedigree, and offshore capability. Taswell yachts were designed by Bill Dixon and built at the legendary Ta Shing yard in Taiwan during the golden era of serious cruising boat construction. These are not production boats built for dock appeal. They’re conservative, heavily built, ocean-crossing sailboats designed for long passages, comfort at sea, and durability over decades. So why don’t more people talk about Taswell? Why do they trade for less than comparable Oysters? And what do you actually give up, if anything, by choosing a Taswell over a big-name bluewater brand? In this episode, we break down: Taswell yacht history and brand background Ta Shing build quality and offshore design philosophy Real price comparisons between Taswell and Oyster yachts What makes a true bluewater cruising sailboat Who a Taswell is actually right for What to watch out for when buying an older offshore cruiser This is not a sales pitch and not a boat tour. It’s a market reality check for sailors who want a serious world-cruising yacht without paying purely for brand recognition. If you’re researching bluewater sailboats, offshore cruising yachts, Oyster alternatives, or trying to understand why some boats command premium prices while others fly under the radar, this video is for you. Let me know in the comments: Would you choose a Taswell over an Oyster if the numbers made sense? After island hopping our way down the Bahamian chain, we’ve reached the edge of the islands… and the beginning of something bigger. In this episode, our family of seven rounds the southern tip of Cuba and enters the powerful waters of the Windward Passage, the stretch of ocean between Cuba and Haiti. Here, currents clash. Swell wraps around the land. Winds oppose the sea. It’s a place where different bodies of water collide and become one — confused, choppy, and unpredictable. We face rough seas, shifting currents, and the kind of conditions that demand teamwork from every single one of us. Offshore sailing with five kids means everyone steps up. Watches are stood. Sails are adjusted. Meals are made underway. And together, we push south. This marks a major turning point in our journey — leaving the Bahamas behind and committing to the open Caribbean as we work our way toward Panama. Passagemaking isn’t always calm turquoise anchorages. Sometimes it’s gray skies, stacked waves, and trusting your boat — and each other. ⚓ Next stop: continuing south toward Panama. Subscribe and follow along as we sail one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic stretches of water as a full-time liveaboard family.

On this episode of GoodJibesOnly; We make the decision to move Pace from anchor to a tiny harbour tucked further up the Arno River ☀️ And why is that you may ask? To catch the local bus and spend a full day exploring the stunning city of Pisa 🇮🇹 while Pace is safe and sound. Join us as we navigate upriver, settle into our new temporary spot, and swap boat life for city streets. Pisa surprised us in the best way — and we can’t wait to show you around. Thank you all so much for being part of the journey 💙 #GoodJibesOnly #SailingLife #LiveaboardLife #BoatLife #SailingAdventure #ArnoRiver #ItalyByBoat #Pisa #TravelVlog #VanLifeOnWater #CouplesWhoSail #SlowTravel #ExploreItaly #MediterraneanLife #AdventureTogether

The Aquila 46 isn't your typical yacht, and that's exactly the point. This power catamaran offers a completely different experience: massive entertaining space, impressive headroom, rock-solid stability, and a ride that might just change how you think about being on the water. Three cabins standard...but here's where it gets impressive: you can opt for 4 or even 5 cabin layouts. Wide-open salon. A flybridge with 6'10" of headroom. Room for a tender AND a PWC. Watch our BOAT TEST to see how she handles, what the numbers really mean, and whether a powercat could be your answer. ⬇️ #Aquila46 #PowerCatamaran #BoatTest #YachtLife #CatamaranLife
