Alexis Loison and Jean-Pierre Kelbert’s JPK 1050 Léon has been crowned overall winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race. No other boat still racing on the 695 nautical mile course can catch the French doublehanded duo for overall honours in this, the 51st edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s offshore classic. Loison and Kelbert have won the event in its centenary year. With a record 444 boats on the start line this year, ranging from 30ft keelboats up to the giant 105ft Ultim foiling trimarans, this offshore race is proving more popular than ever. The ingredients for winning remain the same: experience, courage, skill, a fast boat along with a soupçon of good fortune. In order to win the Fastnet Challenge Cup, you need to beat your rivals under IRC, the rating rule which is used in order to handicap different designs of keelboats of various shapes and sizes, allowing them to race together. The first battle is to win your division, and yesterday it became clear that Léon had prevailed in the 70-boat IRC Two fleet. Overnight it became increasingly clear that none of the remaining boats still on the race course would be able to beat Léon on IRC corrected time. This is part two of an epic 11-day sailing adventure cruising the Pacific coast, SF Bay Area and the Sacramento Delta aboard my West Wight Potter 19, with not a single night in a marina. Transcript... We're off to an early start this morning. this time to catch the slack tide at the Carquinez Bridge Straight. So, I've completely lost almost all power on board. Now, I'll have to drastically curtail my use of the autopilot and the electronic charts. I'm fine with hand steering. It's just those occasions when you need to leave the helm that become a problem. Still, it's certainly good practice to learn to do without the autopilot. The loss of the electronic charts, however, could be much more of a problem in these confined waters. I'll resort to using the charts on the fish finder which are quote unquote not meant for navigational purposes. This peculiarity is still manned to this day. The wide open expanses of the Suisan Bay. Hoist sail me hearties? By the way, Pittsburgh Marina is great. I stopped there for gas, trash, and ice. Such nice, helpful staff. Heavy winds blew up around Bradford Island and caused me quite some consternation. After 4 days sailing back to back, I'm tired and the vessel is a mess. Somehow I prepare some food and eat and collapse into a heap. Well, it's the 4th of July, Independence Day. Jonah's anchor is staying put today, or at least I hope it is. Today is most definitely a rest day. The fine folks on that boat you just saw are holding a party tonight. The margaritas were plentiful and free. What can I say? Images are blurred to protect the less than innocent. It became a moving feast and I eventually ended up back at my boat. I've kayaked ashore to check out the levy. The surrounding farmland is some 20 ft below the top of the levy. I'm paddling over to explore the reed beds. Absolute chaos. Oh boy. Now I've hit something. I'm taking on water and the boat's behaving really weirdly. The keel is bucking all over the place and the boat will not head up into the wind. It's blowing 20 knots out there and an adverse current to boot. Something stuck to the keel. What to do? I raise the keel, but it's not enough. I realize I'm going to have to raise the keel higher than normal. This I do by moving the winch bolt lower onto the keel. And miraculously, it solves the problem. I return to mopping up the water. Boy, was that a relief. 12 bucks 80 for two gallons of gas. We're back sailing now and everything seems fine. The end of another testing day. I'm not sure how much type two fun I can take. Well, that's a mighty odd way for the anchor road to be. It's only gone and wrapped itself around the blooming keel. Jammed tight it is, and I cannot pull it free. Having a retractable keel has its benefits and the problem is solved with a quick bit of winching. First challenge of the day solved and so soon after breakfast. There's no getting around it. I've got a full day of motoring to Winward today. It's a bit rough out, shipmates. We arrive at Clipper Cove uneventfully, and I cook dinner.

This is the World on Water 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race special for August first. Spectators in their thousands swarmed Cowes Green and the shores of the western Solent to witness the starts of the 51st Rolex Fastnet Race. This year’s event marks the centenary of the first Fastnet Race that saw seven boats set sail from Ryde and finish in Plymouth in 1925. Fittingly the start saw a new record entry of 444 competitors, up from the previous largest of 430 in 2023, confirming the event as the world’s largest offshore race. With Cowes and the Solent overcast thanks to an occluded front, the starts took place beneath an overcast sky in a 10-12 knot southwesterly and a building ebb tide.  Our report starts with a race preview and then the race start. As dawn was showing its first rays off Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, so the sleek light blue triple-hulled form of the Ultim trimaran SVR Lazartigue sped across the finish line of the 51st Rolex Fastnet Race to collect overall line honours. Given this year’s relatively light winds, her time of 1 day 17 hours 18 minutes 4 seconds was well outside the 1 day 8 hours 38 minutes 27 seconds record time she set in 2023’s gale-force conditions. Skipper Tom Laperche commented: “The race was different, more strategic and tactical. The windiest part was 20 knots, whereas last year it was 35. Versus Banque Populaire, early on we made a good decision to go close into the English coast and managed to cross them coming back on starboard. We got in front. It was difficult returning from Fastnet to Scilly, because the wind was stronger behind, so they reduced their deficit. Since yesterday afternoon we knew that it will be tactical between the gybes when they have a good speed.” While little known outside of France, the Ocean Fiftys (ex-Multi 50s) are a trimaran class on the ascent with nine boats competing in the centennial Rolex Fastnet Race, as part of their annual calendar. Despite being a speedy box rule class they enjoyed some of the closest racing across the fleet. Highly surprising was just how competitive the doublehanded Ocean Fiftys demonstrated themselves to be in the Rolex Fastnet Race, with the leader reaching the Fastnet Rock on the transom of the MOD70 Argo and even the Ultims not fully shaking them off until they had passed Plymouth.  Exiting the Solent, Matthieu Perraut, and Jean-Baptiste Gellée, on the Neyhousser-designed Inter Invest led Erwan le Roux, and Audrey Ogereau, on the VPLP-penned Koesio out of the Solent alongside Banque Populaire, the mighty Ultim literally twice their length. That evening they passed Portland Bill, hanging on to the coattails of Actual Ultim 4, with Koesio now out in front heading deep into Lyme Bay. Inter Invest timed their tack back out of Lyme Bay better than the others, overtaking Koesio, but the whole class remained tightly grouped.  The French sailor Elodie Bonafous’ spectacular start to her career in the IMOCA Class continued today as she followed up second place in the Course des Caps earlier this month with her first victory in the Class in the Rolex Fastnet Race. Racing with French veteran Yann Eliès, alongside Basile Bourgnon and Gaston Morvan of France, Bonafous, 29, reached the finish line off Cherbourg in the early hours of the morning just eight minutes ahead of second-placed Jérémie Beyou and his team on Charal. Bonafous’ crew on board Association Petits Princes-Quéguiner had taken two days, 14 hours and 7 minutes to complete the highly technical 695-nautical mile classic course from Cowes on the English south coast to Cherbourg, via the Fastnet Rock off the southwest tip of Ireland. This year’s course was mainly upwind to the Rock and then downwind on the way back, as the six IMOCAs that completed the race sparkled close to the front of a Fastnet fleet of 444 boats.' Another heavyweight is currently prevailing in IRC One. In a truly impressive performance, the team on Australian Linda Goddard's Swan 53 cruiser Bedouin continues to hang on to first place in IRC One, ahead of several class favourites. These include past overall Rolex Fastnet Race winner Géry Trentesaux’s Sydney 43 GTS Long Courrier, who this year has been leading the RORC Season’s Points Championship, and Ed Bell and the Mark Spearman-led crew on the JPK 1180 Dawn Treader. Skippered by Linda Goddard, the Swan 53, Bedouin, representing Australia, has taken the top spot in IRC One, outperforming a highly competitive fleet in the 50–60 foot range. Racing with her daughters and close crew, Goddard’s campaign combined Corinthian spirit with impressive offshore performance to deliver a memorable class win in the centenary edition of the race. It was a truly impressive performance, for the team on Australian Linda Goddard's, Swan 53, cruiser, Bedouin.

A margin of less than two minutes secured the Class40 victory last night for Corentin Douguet and Axel Trehin’s Faites un don sur SNSM.org after 700 miles of tense, tightly fought racing. This pattern continued throughout the fleet, with several places contested by equally slim margins, while almost the entire first half the 24-strong fleet finished in just 47 minutes. Drama unfolded even as the starting cannon fired at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes when more than 20 per cent of the fleet jumped the gun, incurring two-hour time penalties that would only be applied after the finish. Class40s have a reputation for incredibly close racing, yet Guillaume Pirouelle and Cedric Chateau’s Seafrigo-Sogestran, together with Milan Kolacek’s Inland Roots Ocean Soul somehow found find a vein of wind that enabled them to leave the pack behind and exit the Solent with a useful early advantage. Take your personal data back with Incogni! Use code SAILINGNANDJI at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: https://incogni.com/sailingnandji The Indian ocean is no joke. It is rough and windy and the 8000+ miles we sailed. last year has taken its toll on Nandji 2. But for the past couple of months, we have been soaking in the stillness, enjoying life with the boat not moving and settling into the charm of a small coastal gem, here in South Africa The town of Knysna Most international cruisers making their way around South Africa tend to rush through this notoriously challenging coast line, eager to reach the calmer Atlantic waters and the city of Capetown Because of that, many sailors skip past Knysna all together, put off by its tricky entrance But, not us We made the decision early on to take our time and sail this coast line slowly and treat each stop as a destination in its own right. We had spent years planning to sail to Africa, so what’s the rush! Though no place has captured our hearts quite like Knysna From the welcoming locals to having the opportunity to tour the Vision catamaran factory and then test sail freshly launched catamarans multiple times, it has us wondering, Do we want to be South African? And Are we catamaran people now? (NO) Although as winter starts to settle in and the chill sets through the hull, it is time to turn our attention back to Nandji 2 and get her ready for the next big adventure Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji #boatlife #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #sailor #sailingfamily #africa #sailingafrica #boatrepairs #boatwork Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures!
