This day was an amazing adventure! We rocketed out in my friends custom speed boat. Jetting out across the shallows of the Bahamas. Explored a few islands and then dove this amazing coral river! It has been coming for a while - and both American Magic and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have got very, very close - but today the America’s Cup holders, Emirates Team New Zealand, gave a festive reminder as to why they are such a potent force in the Cup world that they dominate. A straight-out 100% record across 36 tacks and 33 gybes laid down the gauntlet to every other team – and just before the Christmas break. It’s the kind of numbers that have Team Directors and Performance Coaches awake at night. The nightmare before Christmas for some, for sure. Sailing the newest AC40 Te Kãkahi, the team were mixed up throughout the three-hour session with ILCA Bronze medallist from Rio 2016 Sam Meech coming back into the squad and Marcus Hansen, the Stand Up Paddleboarding champion and 49er tune-up partner for Pete Burling and Blair Tuke continuing his recent run with the team. Josh Junior and Andy Maloney – the two great friends and Finn rivals made up the rotation whilst Nathan Outteridge and Pete Burling helmed but also jumped into the crew positions at times. The mark of this team is everyone pulling together and learning each other’s roles to such a degree that everything becomes second nature, and, on this form, Emirates Team New Zealand are looking a mighty outfit – already. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
There were no high fives just professional satisfaction today out in Palma as the INEOS Britannia Team took flight un-aided onboard the silver-liveried LEQ12 and very quickly, the multi gold-medallists Sir Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott, had her rocketing at 30 knots, offering up the very best Christmas present for all fans of the British team. Stepping ashore, a relaxed Ainslie was full of praise for the whole team who have worked tirelessly to transform T6 from a data collection towing platform to a fully operational LEQ12 capable of flight, following the AC Rules Committee ruling that clarified towing masts and effectively outlawed them: “I'm sure there probably were a few little fist pumps going around. It's a big step combining America's Cup with Formula One and for a lot of those engineers to get their heads around what goes into a boat like this, getting systems operating and then getting it up to the point of flying. It’s a big step forward for the team but clearly a long way to go to get the boat fully operational.” Section 41. The Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team closed out their 2022 sailing programme today with a solid three-hour session out by the marine-protected area of Villasimius in search of the promised Levante breeze that eventually arrived late in the afternoon. International Moth whizz Francesco Bruni and Nacra 17 ace Ruggero Tita were on the wheels of the LEQ12 today with the session dominated by tow-to-fly pull-ups from the expert chase boat team who have got the fine art down to a tee. Very slick indeed. Max Sirena, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team Director, was pleased with how the team have ended the year saying: “It’s been an important year 2022, we started the design of our LEQ12 early in the year without knowing the class rule and so we designed more or less the boat without many information and what we were thinking or considering could be the new class rule. I think we achieved a pretty good result, since the launch of the boat we sailed in all most of the conditions from really light to stronger, heavy conditions, sometimes waves which is going to be most of the conditions in Barcelona.” Section 41. In the Bay of Angels, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team were busy perfecting sailing technique with helmsmen Francesco ‘Cecco’ Bruni and Marco Gradoni concentrating on light airs take-offs in a morning session where the wind, from the northwest filtering over the mountain range behind, struggled to get above 9 knots. The recon team noted that: “The prototype struggled for a self-take off. It seems that while the mainsail is constantly powered and depowered (‘pumping’) the leeward board arm is close to parallel to waterline. It is unclear whether during the transition the two flaps are regulated separately or combined to generate the required lift and side forces. Several upwind tow-to-fly runs were observed.” Section 41. Cooper Dressler talks through the team's off shore sailing day on PATRIOT. New York Yacht Club American Magic, were towed outside of the Bay in the afternoon to find bigger swells and were absolutely sending it on long runs that saw the recon RIB struggle to keep up. The on-water recon team kept a visual on Patriot throughout the session and noted that: “The wind was 12k with slightly higher gusts. The offshore swell was 3 feet (with the occasional set of 4-5ft waves). The residual chop on top of the swell was confused and coming from different directions, creating a washing machine effect. It was difficult to discern (at times) whether Patriot had touched down or if the hull and foil were on different parts of the wave. There were several instances where the main hull was on top of the wave and the foil was in the trough. During those instances Patriot would quickly come off foil as there appeared to be no water under the foil.” Section 41. My first experience with a Capelli RIB and wow was I impressed with how she rides! Join me for a cruise on a very windy Sydney Harbour day with moderate swells and lots of wind chop. We take the boat through some waves before testing her up to her full speed of 50kts with the 300Hp Yamaha's. You get a lot of boat in 10m and this Capelli Tempest 1000 is no exception. She's ideal for large groups on day trips but equally manageable for just one person or a couple of teenagers to operate. The U-Shaped seating with sun shade is super social and with toilet and double bed below you can even have a night away on this boat! Emirates Team New Zealand kicked off the Christmas week of their re-vamped LEQ12 programme with a light-weather day out on the Hauraki Gulf as the north easterly breeze filled and faded all afternoon. Technique in the light is something that every team will be focussing on as the countdown to Barcelona continues and it was notable that, on occasion, to promote flight, the leeward crew could be seen crossing to windward, forward of the mast, to unload the pressure on the foil and get airborne. It’s a highly effective technique for the really marginal flying conditions and one that the Kiwis and the Italians have been using to great effect in training – and the difference is more than notriceable. Today saw a change in the test-crew with Blair Tuke not on the boat in favour of the not inconsiderable frame of Josh Junior – New Zealand’s Olympic representative in the Finn Class at the Tokyo Olympics. Perhaps not the best choice for a light-weather day but the affable Josh was excited to be back on the boat saying: “For me it’s great to get out there and sail with the guys who have been doing it a lot and just see what it’s all about and how far we’ve come.” Section 41. They had their Santa hats on at the crew briefing this morning before the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team docked-out early and took to the water for a Saturday blast around a blustery Pensacola Bay. And it was one heck of a sail with the team covering some 54 nautical miles and throwing in a total of 65 manoeuvres. No Christmas break for the rotating cyclors today. With the forecast showing the breeze gradually dropping off in the afternoon, the Americans made the best of the morning, and it was clear that this was a serious crew training session. Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison had company today in the helming team with Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations, onboard, even taking a turn on the wheels, and the team pushed the boat at what looked like race pace all morning. For the first hour, the small J4 was the call on the headsail with the wind gusting in at 15 knots but as it faded, the team changed up to the J2 and had the boat on rails and very much “in control” as the recon team reported afterwards. Life on a sailboat has taken us to some pretty amazing places over the years but Malta is hands down one of the most unique. As we explore this small island in the middle of the Mediterranean, it feels like we are constantly surrounded by giant stone fortresses, and every alleyway looks like it came straight out of Game of Thrones. Something that we love about the sailing lifestyle is that rather than just getting to visit this incredible place, we get to call it home for a while. Short and sweet but utterly worthwhile was the tale of the tape today out La Sella del Diavolo, Cagliari, as Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli did their level best to squeeze more time-on-the-water as they run through their LEQ12 development programme. But mother nature was proving to be a tricky mistress all day with light winds dominating and the weather team doing their best to find a window. As Horacio Carabelli, Co-Design Co-Ordinator for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli said afterwards: “It was a pretty tricky day in terms of the weather, it was not easy, as inside there was less wind, and outside we were trying to get a window to get something out of the day.” Section 41. It may not be on the market yet, but this is another cool new product from Mercury Marine -- the Mercury Avator 7.5e electric outboard. Avator is an all-electric outboard that was officially launched at CES 2023. BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow got a sneak peek at the Avator during a recent visit to Mercury's Lake X testing grounds. Since we filmed this video, more specs and info were released and can be found at https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/engines/outboard/avator/mercury-avator-75e/. As of February 2023, the Avator wasn't yet available for purchase, but from what we saw, it's going to be able to be installed on a wide range of boats. 🚩Enjoy this video? Meet Nancy and Jonathan. A few years ago they were planning a camping trip to Norway. But the weather wasn’t looking so great and that’s when they decided to go sailing in Greece instead. A bit of an experiment, since Nance had never sailed before. But things worked out well. The awesome efficiency of Emirates Team New Zealand was thrust into the global spotlight today with the emergence of the fully repaired, and completely re-branded LEQ12 that suffered such significant bow damage back on the 21st November that had many commentators predicting that we wouldn’t see the team back on the water until the New Year. Speaking about the rebuilding of the bow on the LEQ12, Spencer, the Onshore Boat Captain for the ETNZ AC40’s gave an insight into the massive team effort required: “We had a pretty busy couple of weeks with the damage and identifying what went wrong and obviously looking at what we had to fix. The designers were pretty busy to start with and then everyone got real busy once we get into the nitty gritty of actually putting a new bow on from the guys up in Omega Street building the new part. Then once the new part was built, bringing it down here, we had a team prepping for that to go on, and then once we got the part on, then that opened up lot of jobs - we had riggers involved with sanding, electricians and we've had sailmakers sanding and everyone sort of getting on a sanding board when we could and a few guys coming down helping out laminating and stuff so we really sort of all got into it - a full team effort…even just sweeping the floor before we were going to paint… it's a pretty cool thing to get it done in this short amount of time.” Section 41. The speculation yesterday surrounding the Patriot capsize was centred on the team, potentially hitting a wooden board, flushed out of the tributaries into Pensacola Bay after rainfall – the team’s chase boat have certainly been fishing items like this out of the Bay for a while now – but on the debrief and after studying onboard video taken looking down at the rudder elevator it has been confirmed that the scourge of the oceans – a plastic bag – was to blame for the stall-out and subsequent roll-over. Speaking today after a shake-down sail, Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations and Skipper of American Magic confirmed what they now know saying: “When we talked about it at first yesterday, we knew we hit some debris and I think I speculated that it was wood, based on the amount that we'd all been pulling out the water over the last month and a half. But after a closer look, we hooked up a plastic bag around the rudder elevator that caused the boat to do a hard right-hand turn and roll into a capsize. So, the good news is we didn't do any damage to the foil…and you can physically see the plastic bag roll off the rudder elevator.” Section 41. Perception and reality – the two imposters of any America’s Cup campaign were on display out in Pensacola yesterday. Headlines could scream ‘capsize’ – and with Patriot we’ve been there spectacularly before – but the reality is that the team had an almost perfect day in terms of manoeuvres before hitting debris in Pensacola Bay, stalling and plopping over. Roll-overs are meat and potatoes to the crews in this America’s Cup and the low-speed, downspeed ones are more of an inconvenience than catastrophe – dramatic as they look to the outside world. To address the dramatic first, Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and President of Sailing Operations at the New York Yacht Club American Magic syndicate explained: “They were going upwind on starboard tack and they hit a submerged board. As we know here in Pensacola when it rains a lot, things flow out of the rivers and they basically hit a ‘log’ in the water, it stalled the boat and the boat rolled over to windward so no harm to anybody, Patriot is upright and coming back in and we’ll haul her out and get her ready to go out again tomorrow.” Section 41. The America’s Cup documentary team were down filming at the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli base today and out in the Bay of Angels and as far as footage was concerned, they couldn’t have wished for more action. With what Sailing Team Coach, Hamish Wilcox described as “a long river of wind blowing in from Gibralta,” the Italian LEQ12 headed out for a very blustery but short blast in the early afternoon – no place for cocktail dresses – but the team put on a mighty show nonetheless.
