The envelope is being pushed. The modifications are coming onstream fast. And today, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s sailors had the pedal to the floor on a perfect day of training on the Golfo degli Angeli in Cagliari. When the wind came in, it was sublime to watch the team click together with very smooth flight control, full commitment through the tacks and gybes and solid transitions afterwards. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

“The boat is going better day by day,” was how Francesco Bruni described the progress being made by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team out at the team’s winter training base in Cagliari and he’s certainly not wrong. On Saturday, the team put extra weight on the boat in the form of two extra crew-members – “big guys” as Bruni described them – and although the struggle for lift-off was real, once the boat was flying it was showing all the signs of a pocket rocket. The Italian LEQ12 looked in perfect control as the wind gusted in on a tricky day that saw the early morning calm replaced by a boisterous 17-24 knots that ultimately saw an early time-out called on the session to preserve the asset. Making the difficult look easy is a rare skill in sport. It’s what defines the great from the rest and on Friday in Pensacola - the ‘City of Five Flags’ – it was a deeply impressive offshore session outside of the Bay that saw American Magic really put down its marker in this America’s Cup cycle. But don’t be fooled by the seemingly benign conditions – just 6 knots and a flat, smooth, sea that barely saw a wave height over one foot, this was as John Croom, one of the refreshingly honest breed of new multi-sport athletes in sailing, described as: “super, super hard out there – I mean we give them the power and they take it.” Section 41. Episode info: EP – 24: Scupper Drains, Electrical Panel and NEMA 2000 Sailing Free Spirit. The engine is being installed so today we focus on getting her to the next phase. (sorry, this video is a little out of order.) This was done prior to us picking up and installing the engine. We got the scuppers plumbed, Andy worked on getting more electrical work done and installed the NEMA 2000 cables so we can connect the helm for the chart plotter and get the engine in. BoatUS got a chance to check out the brand new Mercury V10 Verado outboards during recent a trip to Mercury's top-secret testing grounds on Lake X. What's so great about these new Verados, you might be wondering? Contributing editor Lenny Rudow was shocked at the get-up-and-go power behind these 350-hp and 400-hp outboards. The 5.7L V10 Verado outboards have an all-new lower unit for more lift and ability to spin a larger prop. This translated to nearly 70 mph IN A PONTOON carrying four passengers!!! In addition, these new powerplants have design tweaks that significantly reduce vibration and noise. It's not typical that you can comfortably hold a conversation over the roar of outboards at WOT -- and it's NOT even an electric powered boat! 🚩Enjoy this video? They paused all morning for the dense, patchy fog to clear in Pensacola Bay, but for the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team it was well worth the wait. A late dock-out at 2.40pm almost called for navigation lights but the mark of this team is to eke maximum time on the water, and it was a thoroughly entertaining and worthwhile late afternoon blast with the team making the absolute most of the 6-knot breeze Dan Morris confirmed the new windward trim position after sailing, saying: “It's a feature right now as we continue develop the boat, so at the moment we have with the option to trim the sail from the windward side all the time which is pretty nice - that's what I’m used to, and we just have to see how we’re able to develop from that point.” Section 41. What an incredible and epic day it truly was! Though there were a few injuries. It was well worth it. Even just diving around the mooring block of my sailboat proved to be an adventure in and of it self. Then venturing further on, only increased the amount of sealife. This area of the Bahamas is far from the beaten path. That's the beauty of having a sailboat. Freediving blue holes became the go to for epic adventures. And the massive cubera snappers all around. A great and sustainable source of food for an end of day dinner. . . But at the end of the day an adventure boat isn't much without performance and this little Dromeas has it in spades. I love this category of boating because it is truly bringing more options and greater benefits to so many people who want to expand their horizons. This is a team brimming with talent and Cagliari was the playground for a two-and-a-half-hour battle against the breeze. Speaking afterwards, Marco Capitani, Sail Designer for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli gave an insight and perspective into the overall importance of this prototype sailing program saying: “…so far it has been very interesting because we can collect qualitative data in each department and obviously I can collect a lot of data from the sails and everyone else is collecting data, so we are learning quite a lot from this boat and so far I think we are very happy with the decision to build our LEQ12.” Section 41. It was a welcome sight to see Sir Ben Ainslie leading from the front today out in a very placid and peaceful, if somewhat chilly Palma, Mallorca and bringing to this America’s Cup cycle a new acronym that is straight out of Formula 1 (we presume). In interview, Ainslie repeatedly referred to the ‘HMI’ – the Human Machine Interface – that crossover point where technology must relent to the human touch and vice versa. Section 41. It was a rather welcome late morning crane-in and a relaxed 1pm dock-out for an afternoon in Pensacola that promised little for the crew of Patriot with a forecast of a dying breeze but delivered rather a lot. Speaking afterwards Head of the Sail Design Department Juan Meseguer - a past winner of the America’s Cup with the BMW Oracle Racing Team back in 2010, confirmed the focus of today’s session, saying: “It is all about systems to be honest and we just put out a list of priorities for the day and we go from system to system, ticking them off and making sure they all work and just how to improve them daily.” Section 41.

Nicole and I spend the weekend deep cleaning Misty then I headed out on a solo sail on Lake Superior. I need the reef as wind picks up to low 20's. I practice heaving to and find a surprise under the Perkins 4-108 engine.

Today out in Cagliari, it very much looked like the auto-pilot was being determinedly switched off and given the day off in preference for human intervention and it was tough at times. Speaking afterwards, one of the quiet and coming stars of the America’s Cup, Ruggero Tita, Olympic Gold medallist in the Nacra 17 class at the recent Tokyo Olympics confirmed that the boat had come out of the shed today “almost unchanged” from the set-up at the weekend and gave his assessment on the day saying: “Today we had some tests on the autopilot and we also had some manoeuvres to do and that’s what we did. It was a very good day.” Section 41. Almost 9 months ago when we found out that Desiree was pregnant, we faced a big decision… Do we do the sensible thing and delay our dream of sailing across an ocean once again or do we somehow press on and pursue this journey that we began so many years ago? In the end we decided to go for it and set our sights on Malta. Now after almost 5,000 miles sailed, we are about to begin the final stage of our journey and we can’t help but wonder… Are we being reckless by pursuing this risky dream, or is this somehow the right decision for our family to be? Glassy seas, but an ominous sky greeted the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team out today deep in the Gulf of Cagliari – the Golfu de Casteddu in local Sardinian- and with a forecast for the wind to increase significantly but some debate and conflict over quite how much and when, it was a tricky day for the team’s meteorologists. It was even harder actually on the water as the team docked out from their quite astonishingly well-appointed base in the Port of Cagliari at midday having spent the morning waiting for the wind. “Part of the game,” was how Max Sirena brilliantly described it and went on: “We righted the boat quickly and the plan was to keep sailing but the breeze was, for about 5 minutes, over 21-22 knots, so we decided to drop the sails mainly because of the waves, not the wind.” It was a good call but there were no dramas or breakages onboard and the most striking yacht of this America’s Cup cycle so far, docked back in at 3.20pm safe and sound.
