Ep 66 – Repowering the boat to 50 amps Sailing Free Spirit While Nancy is at work, Andy is playing and getting some much needed work completed. Since have installed the final appliances and have since discovered that we are drawing too much power from our current 30 amp service and constantly throwing the brakers. We are increasing to 50 amps now and have to re-do the wiring on the boat to allow for the higher amperage. Plus, we upgrade the galvanic isolator to 60 amps to keep up with the growth of the boat. In this video we sail from Santa Barbara to Catalina Island. We have a wonderful time sailing under spinnaker for most of that 90 nautical mile trip, allowing us to arrive with plenty of daylight left in the day. Along the way we have a spinnaker jibe go wrong, wrapping the spinnaker around the forestay twice and adding some rips to the spinnaker along the foot. Then right after that we caught a small fish. The day after we arrived in Avalon, we got to swim with Pyrosomes, which we refer to as "Sea Wieners". They're amazing colonies of creatures that get as big as a person, if not bigger! These were relatively small sea wieners, but boy were they abundant! Ira caught another fish, giving us a great meal for the evening, and after exploring Avalon for a few days, we head out to the more rural reaches of Catalina.

Folding sails can be one of the argument-inducing activities around a boat. After working in a couple sail lofts growing up, I learning how to fold sails by doing it multiple times a day (lol, can you imagine the employee turnover at lofts if an argument broke out every time a sail was folded!). The trick is to take smaller folds at the leach, and allowing the person at the luff to stack the luff as they like, or taking bigger folds at the leach when the sail starts to stack past the luff. Hopefully this video helps prevent a few fights over folding sails.

It's bittersweet because the Whitsundays is home to us, filled with friends and memories and we will not be back for 6 years BUT we are excited for the adventures to come!
