We started at Aspley Bottom Lock and made our way to the Rising Sun Lock for a couple of ales with new friends. Magnus helped out a couple of fellow boaters who had had an altercation with a cill. With the engine fixed it was a well earned trip to the Anglers Retreat establishment for a celebratory ale or two. We then headed towards the Aylesbury Arm, filled a couple of pounds and made our way down the flight of locks towards Aylesbury. A quick stop in at Tescos and a final mooring in the Aylesbury Basin. A lovely spot. Magnus tested out his recently learnt piloting skills with our new DJI Mavic Pro. Keep an eye out for next week's episode. So many people have recommended the area of Kekova on the southern coast of Turkey, that we just had to make the sail there. We weren’t disappointed; this part of Turkey just keeps on throwing up Gems! Anchored in Sicak Koyu we trek through the ancient ruins of Aperlae before moving on to the delightful hamlet of Ucagiz. After exploring the town we enjoy time with fellow sailors Lee & Larry before parting ways and heading back along the coast to Nuri Beach, just east of Kas. As the first sanctioned regatta for the growing Melges 14 fleet, the day’s first race was a historic one. Charlie Buckingham took the race win in medium, shifty conditions on Sarasota Bay. Buckingham got off the line clean and was able to get into the pressure which filled from the right. 13-year-old Chapman Peterson had an impressive start. Peterson hit the starting line at full speed and punched ahead of the fleet right off the bat. Buckingham was first around the windward mark and was able to hold onto his lead until the finish. Behind Buckingham was Matthew Woodworth, Mitchell Rogers, Tim Llewellyn, and Sean Fidler. The breeze throttled down to fragile, light conditions for the second race. The key to success was sailing through the pressure. Woodworth quickly adapted through changing conditions and consistently kept his boat in the breeze to earn the bullet in race two. A large left shift shook up the fleet halfway up the first beat. Bob Little and Mitchell Rogers capitalized on the shift to round first and second, respectively, at the first weather beat. The wind gradually decreased as the race continued. Woodworth won the race followed by Rogers, Buckingham, Sean Fidler and Little. With a lack of sailable breeze but plenty of sunshine, race committee called for postponement following the finish of the second race. At least one sailor took a short siesta on the cockpit of the Melges 14 while others practiced their roll tacks, debriefed the previous races, or just soaked up some sun. The fleet floated for just over a half hour before race committee made the call to end racing for the day. On Saturday morning the Melges 14 fleet kicks off the Melges 14 Tour with a special breakfast hosted by Melges Performance Sailboats at 9:30 a.m. Stay tuned to the Melges Performance Sailboats Facebook Page for regatta coverage throughout the weekend. Champagne Conditions for the Melges 14 Midwinter Championship DAY TWO REGATTA REPORT SARASOTA, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2017) – At the inaugural Melges 14 Midwinter Championship, Matthew Woodworth, Charlie Buckingham and Mitchell Rogers are leading with one more day of racing left. Today sailors enjoyed three consistent, windy races run by Principle Race Officer Irene McNeill and the race committee team. The Sunshine State proved its name — Sailors enjoyed abundant sunshine at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron on Florida’s Lido Key. Racing will continue tomorrow. The second day of the regatta began with a breakfast hosted by Melges Performance Sailboats for the Melges 14 sailors. With too faint of a breeze for racing, everyone socialized during postponement. When the sea breeze rolled in, sailors were hungry to hit the water. With the sound of one horn around 1:00 p.m., every sailor raised their full-range Gold rig and splashed boats. The sea breeze filled at a solid 10-15 mph that held consistently into the evening. Saturday’s first start was pin-favored and everyone tacked to port. Rogers held the lead of the race at the first weather mark. Dan Guidinger and Woodworth followed. Upwind, Guidinger used the left shift to pop ahead of everyone with the exception of Rogers. Woodworth showed exceptional downwind skills throughout the event. After the windward mark rounding, he was able to reel in Guidinger and Rogers to take the bullet in race three Buckingham and Woodworth battled it out in race four. Both sailors started in the middle of the line and punched out early. Woodworth’s downwind speed pushed him ahead. Rogers was over the starting line at the gun and eventually finished in eighth place, dropping him back in the standings. David Hillmyer, after not sailing on the event’s first day, quickly adapted to the new class and finished in fifth place in race four. The race ended with Woodworth taking the bullet, Buckingham in second, Fidler in third, Little in fourth and Hillmyer in fifth. Woodworth extended his lead over the fleet in race five. The scoresheet held true to form with the top five regatta leaders each finishing in their respective place. When not racing, Melges 14 owners shared strategies to build the fleet on the grassroots level. Jon Mann spoke on his efforts in Norfolk, Virginia with the Melges 14 Mid-Atlantic Regatta & Demo April 22-23. Daniel Thielman, Steve Cameron and Angie Liebert spoke about the growing San Francisco fleet. “There’s just no comparison to how easy the Melges 14s are to rig,” said Mitchell Rogers about the Melges 14 compared to similar boats of its size: “They will find more success in the Melges 14 because of how easy the sail depowers.” Over breakfast, the community discussed jibe technique, body positioning, downwind vang, heel angle and centerboard placement.
