A type of "Eurasian hobby" (Falco subbuteo) rested on top of KARMA's mizzen mast for some hours before giving us an incredible show of how the laws of land bird predators and pray can also be applied in the middle of the Ocean. Film was recorded 150 nautical miles away from the shores of Portugal on our 14th day of sailing from Netherlands to Canaries. We sail from Iraklion to Rethymno where we explore parts of Crete together with our friends Martin & Rudy who are on holiday on the island. We didn't have the chance to visit the villages on Santorini when we where there earlier and decide to make up for that by taking the fast ferry

It's been awhile since I have published an episode and I hope you enjoy this one. Its a little longer than usual as we had an action packed crossing. The last few weeks have been jam packed with work preparing the boat to leave NZ for Fiji, sailing to Fiji and now fixing the many things that broke on that trip. I met a guy in the Vuda Marina in Fiji who told me it takes around 2 years to get comfortable with all the systems on the boat and I think he is right. It seems like the minute I fix something in one system, another one has a problem. We had a fairly major problem with the generator at Minerva reef (watch out for next week's episode). Slowly but surely we're getting there. Most of the tie with big smiles on. :) We now have internet on board in Fiji and I'm looking forward to creating more episodes and getting them published when we are in good service.

I really enjoyed making this episode. I loved hearing how the rest of the crew experienced the crossing. This crossing was a real adventure. It was chockerblock full of mechanical problems. It wouldn't be an ocean voyage without the fun of figuring out how to fix problems and we had lots of fun on this crossing. So much so that the highlight of Andres Soux's trip was fixing the watermaker. :)

We arrived in Fiji three weeks ago and ran straight into the funnest part of boating. The boatwork. :) Our generator blew up on us at Minerva reef so in the first two weeks of being here we craned the entire generator out of the boat, fixed it, and then craned it back in and hooked it back up. I had never taken a generator out of a boat before but we figured it out without to many major problems. Our starboard engine was also leaking fuel from a cracked injector (something happened to it while in the yard in NZ). A new one arrived via Fedex from the US and I figured out how to remove the old one and install the new one mostly headache free again! I am finding boatwork very satisfying. While waiting for the generator to come back we made it out to Musket Cove for the week-end and I got to test drive my new scooter. :) Sooooo fun! The kids are loving Fiji so far. There are tons of kids in the one anchorage we've made it to so far! We're all looking forward to more exploring.

Episode 12 - What we like about Fiji In some ways our stay in Vuda marina seems like a dream eventhough it was only two weeks ago. Vuda was a cool place to hang out while we fixed the boat. Amazing sunsets. It seems like all of Fiji has incredible sunrises and sunsets. After almost two weeks without it we finally got the generator back and found that the heat exchanger has a hole in it after going in for a cleaning. Thanks to the ingenuity of the guys at Baobob marine we were able to make up another one without waiting for the OEM part from the US. Another three days and we had the generator back up and running! Next week we're off to Musket cove again for some Kiting!

Welcome aboard our home in Fiji. We moved aboard our boat full time in February 2017 and sailed from New Zealand to Fiji in June of the same year. These first 6 months onboard are an experiment for us as we've invited Aya's father (Sayo's Ex-husband) to live with us on board. Please excuse my atrocious singing at the end. ;) I hope you enjoy the episode.

In this episode we spend a lot of time sitting around waiting for people and parts so that we can start making our way north. We're still getting used to the boat and all living together in such a small space. The charts in Fiji are not very good and once we get going we have to navigate visually. We're slowly making our way from Nadi to Savusavu. See you next week!

We have just returned to something like civilization after three weeks without internet, cell service, stores, shops, or anything remotely resembling the western world. It was incredibly relaxing. We met beautiful people and saw stunningly beautiful sights. I'm looking forward to sharing the journey. In this episode we cross the Bligh Water on our way to Savusavu. It is Sayo and the kids' first open ocean crossing since we've been in Fiji. (They are veterans now after we sailed 188 miles overnight back to Savusavu. That video is still to come.) In Savusavu we stumbled across the Miss Savusavu pagent and JD and I found some friends to ride the Ferry's wheel with. (That is not a spelling error, they actually call it the Ferry's wheel.) And Miya attended her first concert! I had fun with this video. I hope you enjoy it. We're back in cell service for a bit and I'm looking forward to sharing more.

Over the last few weeks we have seen some of the most stunning scenery I've ever seen and done some of the best diving I've ever experienced. We sailed to islands that few people outside of Fiji ever visit. The coconuts and bananas there are the closest thing to perfect bananas and coconuts I've ever had. Yet none of that is what makes Fiji so special. What makes Fiji so special is...

We just returned from three weeks around Kadavu in southern Fiji, dropped anchor and have.... cell service!! I'm actually excited to have cell service so I can publish another episode. :) We had a great time around Kadavu and now we're back in cell coverage I'm looking forward to catching up on a LOT of editing. We are off to a fire and knife dance tonight with our friends from SV Qi.

I was inspired after hearing the Baker of Vanua Balavu's story. The love he has for the simplicity of baking for others was infectious. He inspired me to bake some Irish Soda Bread for my family. I find traveling a wonderful way to meet beautiful people.

In Fiji's Lau Group there are hundreds of little deserted islands with stunning white sand beaches. We found a little hidden one and took the kids to shore before a 10 hour passage. We were welcomed with open arms in Phulanga and adopted into a Fijian family. It's the village tradition and felt wonderful.

This was a super fun episode to film. We spent a total of almost ten days at Musket Cove. It is a big kid's (and little kid's) playground! There are great beaches for the kids, a water bouncy gauntlet and an awesome sandbar for Kiting! I have fallen in love with kiting again and Fiji is an awesome place to do it. (though my kites may not agree, I flew one into a tree three days ago).
